¡Greetings from Encuentro!

The 18th of December is recognized around the world as International Migrants Day.  Established by the United Nations through a convention recognizing the critical contributions of migrant workers around the world, this marks an important day for Encuentro students and their families, who as recent immigrants are experiencing the challenges and opportunities of living in a new country. To give voice to these experiences, three Encuentro students, Silvia, Efrain and Laura, shared their immigrant stories this past Monday night on KUNM’s Espejos de Aztlan (http://kunm.org/two-week-archive to access the December 17th 7:00 pm link).  Their stories reflect the hopes many immigrants have arriving in the US, such as opportunities for better employment and continuing their education, and mostly for providing better lives for their children.  Nevertheless, these hopes also exist within a context of doubt and insecurity resulting from the inability to establish permanent legal status and the benefits and rights afforded to persons who have their US citizenship.  Questions such as: How will recent election results impact immigrants? Will legislation pass that provides a just comprehensive immigration reform strategy?  Will immigrant families truly have the opportunity to enjoy the very reasons that brought them to this country in the first place? None of these questions have clear responses at this time, but one thing we know for sure is that today more than ever before it is urgent the immigrant voices be heard, and that immigrants are visible and engaged in the conversations and decision making processes that will determine our future. I would like to thank Silvia, Efrain and Laura for their strength and for their desire to have their voices heard in representation of the valuable contributions and strong values of our immigrant community.  Their voices give us hope and motivation to continue raising our voices.  On behalf of Encuentro, we share deep appreciation for their efforts and congratulate them for taking the step to be heard. This holiday season is a time for hope – let’s unite and stay active in the coming year so that together we can build a better future for our community and for the whole world!
