Promotor de la justicia digital de MLP, Emmanuelle “Neza” Leal-Santillán, hablo con Tu Voz Digital sobre la neutralidad en Internet y lo que significa la nueva regla para nuestra comunidad.

Tu Voz Digital (TVD): ¿Nos puedes explicar lo que la nueva regla quiere significar?
Neza: la nueva regla que aprobó la comisión básicamente va asegurar de que las compañías como Comcast ahora van a tener que hablar con el gobierno para decidir cualquier cosa del internet.

TVD: Mucha gente esta confundida, piensan que ya no van a tener que pagar por internet, que el internet va ser gratis, pero no es cierto eso.¿Nos puedes explicar un poco mas para aclarar las dudas que tiene la gente?
Neza: La semana pasada la comisión federal de comunicaciones en un voto histórico reconoció el internet como un servicio publico y no un servicio privado. Ahora con estas nuevas reglas el internet es considerado un servicio publico no de que va ser gratis pero ahora las compañías no van a tener el control cien por ciento del internet. Ahora van a tener que hablar con el publico. Van a tener que hablar con el gobierno para que todos juntos hagamos decisiones sobre el futuro del internet juntos.

TVD: ¿Nos puedes explicar el esfuerzo de ustedes?
Neza: Empezamos a informarnos y a investigar el porque las compañías querían dividir el internet. Nos informamos que las compañías querían dividir el internet en dos clases: una para los ricos y otra para los pobres. Investigamos como cambiar esto y en como pararlas.

TVD: ¿Como pudimos llegar a esta decisión?
Neza: Cuando empezamos a luchar para que el gobierno reconozca que el internet es un servicio publico las compañías como comcast estaban en gran oposición a esto porque ellos invirtieron millones de dolares para derrotarnos. Pero nosotros sin dinero, sin millones, sin el poder que ellos como compañías tienen logramos embarcar una campana del pueblo. Una campana donde hablamos con nuestros representantes, hablamos con la comisión federal de comunicaciones, hablamos con empresas pequeñas aquí en Nuevo México, y hablamos con otros grupos comunitarios a través del país para luchar por esto. La oposición decía que el internet se iba quebrar y que el mundo se iba acabar pero como ven no se acabo.

TVD: ¿Estas satisfecho con la decisión?
Neza: Si, estamos satisfechos de la decisión. Esto es algo que hemos luchado por muchos anos. Pero hay que reconocer que esto es el primer paso. Ahora podemos luchar por mas acceso por internet. Y para que las compañías no discriminen a la gente.

TVD: ¿Y ahora que sigue?
Neza: Ya que hemos logrado esta gran victoria para la comunidad que el internet sea un servicio publico, ahora tenemos que seguir luchando para asegurarnos que este cambio se realice. En las próximas semanas esperamos en que las compañías que están en contra como Comcast y Verizon van a demandar al gobierno. Van a tratar de llevarlos a la corte para quitar esta nueva regla. Entonces hay que seguir apoyando a la comisión federal de comunicaciones que realizo esta nueva regla

TVD: ¿Quieres agregar algo mas?
Neza: El internet ya no es un privilegio. El internet ahora es algo esencial para todos. Para hacer cosas como la tarea, para buscar información, para escuchar tu voz digital. Ahora que el internet es publico nos ayuda porque ahora mas personas pueden tener acceso al internet. El internet es un lugar sin fronteras y queremos que siga siendo un lugar sin fronteras. Y también este gran logro fue en gran parte por gente aquí en Nuevo México.

FCC Adopts new rules for net neutrality

In a historic vote the Federal Communications Commission adopted new rules that would prevent the implementation of fast lanes in the internet by service providers, last week Thursday,Feb. 26.

Media Literacy Project(MLP) was present at Encuentro the day of the historic vote to watch the decision live and to inform the community why it is important to have free internet.

Emmanuelle “Neza” Leal- Santillan, MLP’s Promoter of Digital Justice, spoke with Tu Voz Digital on net neutrality and what the new rules mean for our community.

This is a brief summary of what you will hear in the interview.

Tu Voz Digital (TVD): Can you explain what the new rule means?
Neza: The new rule adopted by the commission will basically ensure that companies like Comcast are now going to have to talk to the government before deciding on anything that has to do with internet usage.

Tu Voz Digital (TVD): Many people are confused, they think they will no longer have to pay for internet and that the internet will be free, but this is not true. Can you explain a bit more to clarify the doubts that people have?
Neza: Last week the Federal Communications Commission in a historic vote recognized the Internet as a public service and not a private service. Now with these new rules the internet is considered a public service that will not be free, but now companies are not going to be in full control of the internet. Now they’ll have to talk to the public and to the government so that together we can make decisions about the future of the internet.

Tu Voz Digital (TVD): Can you tell us what your effort was throughout this whole process?
Neza: We started by informing ourselves and investigating why companies wanted to divide the internet. We found that the companies wanted to divide the Internet into two classes: one for the rich and another for the poor. We investigated how to change that and how to stop them.

Tu Voz Digital (TVD): How were we able to get to this decision?
Neza: When we began to fight for the government to recognize that the Internet is a public service companies like Comcast were largely opposed to this because they invested millions of dollars to defeat this cause. But with no money, no millions of dollars, and without this great power that the large companies have we embarked o a campaign for the people. A campaign where we talked to our representatives, we talked to the Federal Communications Commission, we spoke to small businesses here in New Mexico, and we also were in contact with other community groups across the country to so that we could collaborate and fight for this. The opposition was saying stuff like the internet is going to fail and that the world is going to end but as you can see it didn’t.

Tu Voz Digital (TVD): Are you satisfied with the decision?
Neza: Yes, we are satisfied with the decision. This is something we have struggled with for many years. But we must recognize that this is the first step. Now we can fight for more internet access and so companies stop discriminating people.

Tu Voz Digital (TVD): Now what happens?
Neza: Now that we have achieved this great victory for the community that the internet is a public service, now we have to keep fighting to ensure that this change is made. In the coming weeks we are anticipating that companies who are against this new rule like Comcast and Verizon are going to sue the government . They will try to take them to court to remove this new rule. So we must continue to support the federal communications commission new rule.

Tu Voz Digital (TVD): Would you like to add anything else?
Neza: The internet is no longer a privilege. The internet is now essential for everyone. To do things like homework, for information, to listen to Tu Voz Digital. Now that the internet is public this helps us because now more people can access the internet. The internet is a place without borders and we want it to remain a place without borders. And also this great achievement was largely due because of the people here in New Mexico.
