National Hispanic Cultural Center
1701 4th Street SW, Albuquerque

Join us on March 20, 2026, for Encuentro’s third annual Tree of Life Honoree Luncheon, celebrating seven leaders who have made a significant impact on our Latinx immigrant community.

This event honors those who plant seeds of hope, nurture growth, and demonstrate transformative leadership, collaboration, and advocacy. Each Tree of Life award recognizes the vital role honorees have played in fostering community vitality!

Sponsorship Opportunities Await!

Each year, Encuentro’s Tree of Life Honoree Luncheon uplifts champions whose leadership, generosity, and advocacy strengthen the Latinx immigrant community across New Mexico.

For the 2026 Tree of Life Awards, 23 nominations were submitted by members of the community. Nominations were reviewed by a five-member selection committee using clearly defined criteria aligned with each award category.

Selected honorees were notified in December and will be formally recognized at the Tree of Life Honoree Luncheon on March 20. Together, they represent the strength, vision, and collective care that allow our community—and Encuentro—to continue to grow and flourish.

From the heart of art and education, our community journalism group had the opportunity to interview the organizers of a deeply moving exhibition currently on view at the Albuquerque Museum: Puertas fronterizas / Border Doors.

This bilingual exhibition, open through May 4, 2025, features artwork by students from Sandia Preparatory School who, guided by teacher Claudio Pérez, have transformed doors into powerful visual pieces that tell real stories of immigration, resilience, and hope.

In this video, you’ll hear directly from the people who made this exhibition possible—their vision, their motivation, and how art can serve as a powerful tool to break down prejudice, spark conversation, and build empathy.

Recently, our community journalist group, Tu voz digital, had the opportunity to interview Beatriz Valencia, member of the New Mexico Hispanic Heritage Committee, as part of the celebrations for Hispanic Heritage Month. During the conversation, Beatriz shared her insights on the significance of this month, the committee’s objectives, and the importance of recognizing the contributions of the Hispanic community in New Mexico and beyond.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15 and honors the rich cultural, historical, and social heritage of Hispanic peoples. Beatriz explained that the celebration originated from commemorating the independence of several Latin American countries and serves as an opportunity to reflect on the roots and legacy these peoples have left in the United States.

The New Mexico Hispanic Heritage Committee’s main objective is to promote and preserve Hispanic traditions and culture in New Mexico. Beatriz emphasized that the committee works to ensure that the voices and stories of the Hispanic community are recognized and valued within the broader narrative of U.S. history. Through various initiatives and events, they aim to educate the general community about the significant contributions of Hispanics in several fields, from education and the arts to politics and the economy.

During the interview, Beatriz highlighted the importance of celebrating Hispanic contributions not only during Hispanic Heritage Month but throughout the year. She added, “It is vital for future generations to know their history and the positive impact our cultures have had on society.” She underscored that this celebration serves not only as recognition of achievements but also as a call to action to continue supporting and promoting the growth of the Hispanic community.

The conversation with Beatriz was enriching and revealing, reminding us all of the importance of celebrating our cultural diversity. The work of the NM Heritage Committee is crucial for remembering and honoring the roots of our community, and we hope this interview inspires more people to participate and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with enthusiasm and pride.

This interview represents just a part of the NM Heritage Committee’s efforts to make the history and contributions of the Hispanic community in New Mexico visible. We encourage everyone to celebrate and engage in the activities planned during this month and to learn more about the rich heritage we all share.

Welcome to another segment of “Nuestra Voz” a production by the community journalism group of Tu Voz Digital in collaboration with the Raíces collective of KUNM 89.9FM. Through this collaboration, we aim to amplify the voices of the migrant community, sharing their stories of struggle and resistance while shedding light on the immigrant experience in the enchanting land of New Mexico.

On April 13, the TVD journalists were privileged to engage in a conversation with the esteemed union activist Dolores Huerta during the annual celebration honoring Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta at the Hispanic Cultural Center in the southern part of the city. This annual event serves as a tribute to the enduring legacy of Chavez and the remarkable life of Huerta, both pivotal leaders in the fight for the rights of farm workers. It is important to remember that César Chávez and Dolores Huerta were influential civil rights activists who dedicated their lives to advocating for the labor rights of agricultural workers. In 1962, they co-founded the United Farm Workers Union, making it the first enduring union of its kind in the United States. Their relentless efforts led to significant improvements in working conditions and wages for farm workers.

Furthermore, beyond their union activism, both Huerta and Chavez championed family unity and were instrumental in advocating for the passage of the Immigration Act of 1986. This pivotal legislation benefitted over one million immigrants by providing them with the opportunity to pursue American citizenship. Don’t miss the insightful interview with Dolores Huerta and perspectives from the event attendees!

In the second part of this segment, you will have the opportunity to engage in a conversation with Emilia Rivera, a educator from Encuentro’s financial education program. Rivera will discuss the importance of financial literacy within our migrant community and share strategies to enhance financial management skills as part of the celebration of Financial Empowerment Month.

Last Saturday, November 11, more than 200 members of our community, including students, allies, and volunteers, gathered at the Encuentro facilities for our third annual fundraising event “Friendsgiving 2023: Celebrating the Day of the Dead”. The event was filled with color, music, and joy as attendees danced to the music of Mala Maña, created community, and supported our mission through raffles. In this event, Encuentro decided to pay homage to one of the most significant traditions of the Mexica culture: Day of the Dead. This colorful tradition honors the memory of loved ones who have passed on the journey before us.

Finally, at the end of the event, there were raffles for various items donated by community members, including decorative items, gift cards, and even spa services.

La Catrina/ El Catrin: La Calavera Catrina (‘Elegant Skull) has become an icon of Day of the Dead that offers a satirical portrait of those Mexican natives who were aspiring to adopt European aristocratic traditions in the pre-revolution era.

El Altar/ Ofrenda
Altars, called las ofrendas (“offerings”), are set up to welcome home the souls of the dead. Altars are decorated with marigolds (the flower of the dead); favorite dishes, candles, incense, toys, other enticements, and objects of personal use. In some instances, a path of flower petals directs the souls to their home altars.
