El 1 de septiembre de 2025, miles de trabajadores, familias y miembros de la comunidad se reunieron en la Plaza Cívica, en el centro de Albuquerque, para la protesta del Día del Trabajo titulada “Trabajadores sobre multimillonarios”. Entre los participantes se encontraban maestros, sindicatos, trabajadores de posgrado y organizaciones progresistas, todos unidos con un mensaje claro: defender a la clase trabajadora y exigir un futuro más justo y equitativo.

Este evento formó parte de un movimiento nacional, con marchas que tuvieron lugar en todo el país. En Albuquerque, los sindicatos y organizaciones locales animaron a la multitud con consignas y discursos que resonaron por las calles de la ciudad. La manifestación destacó la importancia de los derechos laborales, la rendición de cuentas corporativa y la lucha por la democracia. Los manifestantes expresaron su fuerte oposición a las políticas promulgadas durante la administración Trump, enfatizando los efectos negativos sobre las protecciones laborales, la educación y las familias trabajadoras. Los carteles y cánticos transmitieron un mensaje contundente: los trabajadores —no los multimillonarios— son la columna vertebral de esta nación.

Encuentro se une a los trabajadores

Encuentro se unió con orgullo a la marcha de este año, caminando junto a sindicatos, educadores, defensores de los inmigrantes y aliados. Nuestra presencia refleja nuestra misión: apoyar a las familias trabajadoras, promover la educación de adultos y fortalecer las trayectorias profesionales que hacen crecer a nuestra comunidad. Para nosotros, el Día del Trabajo no solo se trata de honrar las luchas pasadas de los trabajadores, sino también de avanzar en la lucha actual por salarios justos, condiciones laborales seguras y oportunidades para todos, especialmente para las familias inmigrantes y latinas que con frecuencia están en la primera línea del trabajo esencial.

 Un movimiento en crecimiento

Según los organizadores, más de 6.000 personas asistieron a la manifestación en Albuquerque, lo que la convierte en una de las celebraciones del Día del Trabajo más grandes de los últimos años. La diversidad de organizaciones participantes —desde los Teamsters y los Trabajadores de las Comunicaciones hasta el Partido por el Socialismo y la Liberación y la Coalición del Suroeste por Palestina— demostró el poder de la solidaridad en torno a diferentes causas.

Encuentro se enorgullece de ser parte de este movimiento. Juntos, estamos forjando una visión de Nuevo México donde los trabajadores, no los multimillonarios, marcan el camino hacia la justicia y la equidad.

On September 1, 2025, thousands of workers, families, and community members gathered at Civic Plaza in downtown Albuquerque for the “Workers Over Billionaires” Labor Day protest. Participants included teachers, trade unions, graduate workers, and progressive organizations, all united in a clear message: stand up for working people and demand a fairer, more just future. This event was part of a national movement, with marches taking place across the country. In Albuquerque, local unions and organizations rallied the crowd with chants and speeches that resonated throughout the city streets. The rally highlighted workers’ rights, corporate accountability, and the fight for democracy. Protesters expressed strong opposition to policies enacted during the Trump administration, emphasizing the adverse effects on labor protections, education, and working families. Signs and chants conveyed the message that working people — not billionaires — are the backbone of this nation.  

Encuentro Stands with Workers

Encuentro proudly joined this year’s march, standing alongside unions, educators, immigrant advocates, and allies. Our presence reflects our mission: to support working families, promote adult education, and strengthen career pathways that uplift our community. For us, Labor Day is not only about honoring the past struggles of workers but also about advancing the current fight for fair wages, safe working conditions, and opportunities for all — especially for immigrant and Latino families who are often on the front lines of essential labor.

A Growing Movement

According to organizers, more than 6,000 people attended the Albuquerque demonstration, making it one of the largest Labor Day events in recent years. The diversity of participating organizations — from the Teamsters and Communications Workers to the Party for Socialism and Liberation and the Southwestern Coalition for Palestine — showcased the power of solidarity across various issues. Encuentro is proud to be part of this movement. Together, we are shaping a vision of New Mexico where workers, not billionaires, lead the way toward justice and equity.

Desde Tu Voz Digital, nuestro grupo de periodistas comunitarios inmigrantes, tuvimos el honor de conversar en vivo con Beatriz Valencia, la encargada de liderar la Oficina de Asuntos de Inmigrantes y Refugiados de Albuquerque (OIRA, por sus siglas en inglés).

Durante la transmisión, exploramos cómo esta oficina, fundada en 2016 con el apoyo de la Fundación W.K. Kellogg, trabaja incansablemente para mejorar la vida de todas las personas inmigrantes y refugiadas que han hecho de Albuquerque su hogar.

???? Facebook Live Interview with Beatriz Valencia, Director of the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs (OIRA) in Albuquerque ????????

As part of our project, Tu Voz Digital, a community journalism group led by immigrant adults, we had the great honor of speaking live with Beatriz Valencia, who heads the City of Albuquerque’s Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs (OIRA).

In this insightful conversation, Beatriz shared how OIRA, established in 2016 with support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, works to improve the lives of all immigrants and resettled refugees living in Albuquerque.

We learned how the office brings together a wide range of community-based organizations to coordinate efforts that support immigrant and refugee communities. Beatriz also discussed the importance of a citywide evaluation completed in 2017, which highlighted urgent needs such as language access, outreach, and inclusive policies to ensure immigrants and refugees can fully participate in civic life and access city services safely and equitably.

This was an inspiring and educational conversation that uplifted voices from our communities. We’re grateful to Beatriz Valencia for her leadership and her deep commitment to inclusion, safety, and opportunity for all.

UnidosUS, the nation’s largest Latino-centered civil rights organization in the USA, kicked off its annual convention on Las Vegas Nevada on Monday, July 15. Gathering more of 1,500 Latinos leaders, advocates and allies, UnidosUS Annual Conference: “Our Time is now! centered around November’s elections and the crucial Latino vote that could swing them.

HIP Conference 2024,
Corazon y Poder: Unleashing our Power:

Held on June 20-21 at Chicago, Illinios, this years Hispanics in the Philanthropy  conference was designed to amplify the collective spirit of our community by fostering connections among leaders from foundations, corporations, and nonprofits. By intersecting collective liberation, leadership, storytelling, music and art, they aim to inspire transformative relationships that drive meaningful change.

The two-day sessions focused on showcasing the initiatives and approaches of a growing network of leaders, organizations, and allies dedicated to collective learning and collaboration. Encuentro’s leaders delved into meaningful discussions about how organizations are mobilizing resources to amplify grassroots innovation and drive towards social justice, as well as identifying opportunities for strategic impact investing. The conversations also explored critical topics such as fueling social movements, advancing Latinx representation, and re framing the Latinx narrative.

Ilse Grijalva, Encuentro’s Communications Manager, attended the 2024 HIP Conference, participating in sessions that explored reframing the Latinx narrative and promoting positive representation.

Julia Cusatis, Director of Development, and Teresa Guevara, Director of Educational Programs, represented Encuentro at the 2024 HIP Conference, participating in a range of sessions focused on fundraising strategies and the power of education.

2024 Elevate Initiative National Convening

On June 4th, the 2024 Elevate Initiative National Convention took place in Atlanta, GA. Encuentro’s Home Health Aide program leaders, Brook Bernini, Rosalina Lopez, and Executive Director Dalia Medina,  participated in educational sessions focused on advancing racial and economic justice, gaining valuable knowledge and insights.

During the convention, they also took part in city tours to learn more about innovative initiatives and grassroots efforts being undertaken by other organizations and individuals. This immersive experience provided them with unique perspectives and insights to inform their work and potentially inspire future collaborations.

Abril se celebra como el Mes del Empoderamiento Financiero, con el objetivo de crear conciencia sobre la importancia de la educación financiera y la gestión responsable del dinero. En los últimos años, se ha prestado cada vez más atención a la educación financiera, impulsada por los cambios en los mercados financieros y las preocupaciones sobre el aumento de la deuda de los hogares, la deuda de las tarjetas de crédito y las declaraciones de quiebra.

Para los latinos en los Estados Unidos, la educación financiera es especialmente crucial ya que, de acuerdo con UnidosUS,  mas de la mitad de los que residen en Estados Unidos  no están conectados a ninguna educación on intitucion financiera. La falta de conocimiento sobre ahorros, inversiones y herramientas financieras prevalece entre los latinos, y una parte importante carece de cuentas de transacciones básicas como cuentas corrientes o de ahorro. Esta falta de acceso a servicios financieros es más pronunciada entre los latinos nacidos en el extranjero, y muchos de ellos no tienen ninguna relación formal con instituciones financieras.

Para cerrar esta brecha, Encuentro ha introducido un programa financiero y de pequeñas empresas diseñado para inmigrantes de habla hispana. Este programa enfatiza la educación financiera y la capacitación empresarial, brindando a los inmigrantes las habilidades necesarias para participar en la fuerza laboral y considerar el autoempleo y la propiedad de empresas como opciones viables para generar ingresos. Al abordar las necesidades de educación financiera de los latinos, programas como el de Encuentro contribuyen a crear vías más equitativas para el empleo y la prosperidad económica. En esta entrevista exclusiva, TVD se sentó con Emilia Rivera,  instructora de educación financiera de Encuentro, para profundizar en los detalles del plan de estudios del programa financiero. Emilia compartió ideas valiosas sobre cómo las personas pueden lograr empoderamiento financiero a través de la educación y estrategias inteligentes de administración del dinero. Además, tuvimos el privilegio de escuchar a Lirio Antillón, egresada de la carrera de finanzas, quien destacó el impacto significativo que tuvo el programa en ella y su familia. Lirio compartió su nuevo conocimiento y cómo ha influido positivamente en sus decisiones financieras, beneficiando en última instancia a toda su familia.

April is celebrated as Financial Empowerment Month, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of financial literacy and responsible money management. In recent years, there has been a growing focus on financial education, driven by changes in financial markets and concerns about rising household debt, credit card debt, and bankruptcy filings.

For Latinos in the United States, financial education is especially crucial as many are not connected to any financial education. Lack of knowledge about savings, investments, and financial tools is prevalent among Latinos, with a significant portion lacking basic transaction accounts like savings or checking accounts. This lack of access to financial services is more pronounced among foreign-born Latinos, with many having no formal relationship with financial institutions.

To bridge this gap, Encuentro has introduced a financial and small business program tailored for Spanish-speaking immigrants. This program emphasizes financial literacy and entrepreneurship training, providing immigrants with the skills needed to participate in the labor force and consider self-employment and business ownership as viable income-generating options. By addressing the financial education needs of Latinos, programs like Encuentro’s contribute to creating more equitable pathways for employment and economic prosperity. In this exclusive interview, TVD sat down with Emilia Rivera, the esteemed financial literacy instructor at Encuentro, to delve into the details of the financial program curriculum. Emilia shared valuable insights on how individuals can achieve financial empowerment through education and smart money management strategies. Additionally, we had the privilege of hearing from Lirio Antillon, a graduate of the financial class, who highlighted the significant impact the program had on her and her family. Lirio shared her newfound knowledge and how it has positively influenced her financial decisions, ultimately benefiting her entire family.

Over 225 working immigrant parents and adults successfully completed their hybrid courses: English as a Second Language, Computer Literacy, Citizenship,Small Business Training and Financial Literacy, Home Health Aide Entry-Level Course and Senior Nutrition.

Graduation is a moment of great pride for our students. It is the culmination of a goal that required a lot of sacrifice, as many of our students are not just dedicated to studying, but also have other responsibilities, such as being parents, grandparents, or working two jobs. Despite these challenges, they come to class every day and fulfill their responsibilities as students. Their determination to excel helps them successfully obtain their competition certificates, which marks the start of a new business or the acquisition of a new skill. This can lead to better job opportunities and open doors that were once thought to be closed.

When students come to Encuentro, they are not just here to learn, but to open a new world of possibilities in the United States. This is why graduation is a very special time for Encuentro and our community.

Este curso académico llega a su fin

Este ciclo escolar conluye de manera exitosa para los más de 225 estudiantes quienes concluyeron sus cursos híbridos: inglés como segundo idioma, computación, ciudadanía, capacitación en pequeñas empresas y alfabetización financiera, curso de nivel de entrada para asistente de salud en el hogar y nutrición para personas mayores.

La graduación es un momento de enorme orgullo para nuestros estudiantes ya que marca la culminacion de una meta mas lograda. Tomemos en cuenta que la mayoria de nuestros estudiantes llegna hasta este momento con mucho sacrificios ya que no oslo se dedican a estudiar: muchos son padres de familia, abuelos, inmigrantes trabajdaroes dedicadods a los suyos. Eso hace aun mas desafiante el reto de venir diariamente a sus clases y cumplir con sus responsabilidades como estduiantes. Sin embargo, el deseo de superacio, supera cualquier desafio y con exito logran recibir sus certificados de completicion marcando asi, el inicio de un nuevo negocios, la implementacion de una nueva habilidad aprendida, el paso hacia un mejor trabajo y la apertura de esa puerta que muchos creian cerrada.

Y es que venir a Encuentr no es solo venir a aprender: es abrir un nuevo mundo. Cuando nuestrso estudiantes ingresan por primera vez a las aulas de Encuentro, comienzan a ver nuevas posibilidades en los Estados Unidos. Al graduarse, recibieron sus certificados de logros, celebraron con la comunidad y lograron nuevos sueños para ellos y sus familias.

Spring is a special time at Encuentro! Each April, student project presentations showcase the fabulous things happening in Encuentro’s classrooms. Classes present what they have learned throughout the year to their families and to the broader Encuentro community by performing role-plays, singing songs, interacting with their audience, and sharing PowerPoint slideshows.

APRENDIENDO EN COMUNIDAD

La primavera es una época especial en Encuentro: cada año en el mes de abril,  los estudiantes de tienen la posibilidad de mostrar las habilidades aprendidas dentro de los salones de Encuentro y esto lo hacen durante las presentaciones de proyectos estudiantiles. Con el apoyo y guia de sus maestros, las clases presentan lo que han aprendido a lo largo del año a sus familias y a la comunidad de Encuentro en general  mediante juegos de roles, interpretació de canciones, interactuando con su audiencia y compartiendo presentaciones de PowerPoint.

En los últimos años, la pandemia de Covid nos obligó a realizar nuestras presentaciones de proyectos en línea, es justo por eso que las presentaciones de este año fueron particularmente especiales ya que finalmente tuvimos la oportunidad de celebrarlas en persona, ademas de que fue la primera vez que pudimos hacerlo en nuestro nuevo edificio!

Estos testimonios de transformación celebran el arduo trabajo y las historias de éxito de nuestros estudiantes mientras desarrollan nuevas habilidades, superando barreras y enriqueciendo a Nuevo México de maneras asombrosas.

Nadie debería tener que elegir entre su trabajo y el cuidado de un nuevo bebé, un familiar enfermo o su propia salud.  Sin embargo, esa es la situación en la que se encuentran muchos trabajadores estadounidenses. Estados Unidos es la única nación de la OCDE que no ofrece algún tipo de licencia familiar o médica remunerada.

Con el Departamento de Soluciones de la Fuerza Laboral administrando el Fondo Fiduciario de Licencia Familiar y Médica Pagada, la iniciativa garantiza que las familias tengan el tiempo que necesitan para vincularse después de dar la bienvenida a un nuevo hijo, tiempo para recuperarse de un problema de salud grave y tiempo para que los cuidadores familiares aborden las necesidades médicas de sus padres, hijos u otros miembros de la familia enfermos.

Los programas PFML también son efectivos para mejorar el desempeño y el compromiso de los empleados. Los estudios muestran que los empleados que toman una licencia paga tienen menos probabilidades de tomar una licencia por enfermedad cuando regresan, es más probable que sean empleados de la misma empresa dos años más tarde y es más probable que informen tener un alto nivel de moral y satisfacción en el lugar de trabajo.

No one should have to choose between their job and caring for a new baby, a sick family member, or their own serious health condition. Yet, that is the situation many American workers find themselves in. The U.S. is the only OECD nation that does not offer some form of paid family or medical leave.

With the Department of Workforce Solutions administrating the Paid Family & Medical Leave Trust Fund, the initiative ensures that families have the time they need to bond after welcoming a new child, time to recover from a serious health problem, and time for family caregivers to address the medical needs of their sick parents, children, or other family members.

PFML programs are also effective in improving employee performance and engagement. Studies show that employees who take paid leave are less likely to take sick leave when they return, more likely to be employed by the same business two years later, and more likely to report high morale and workplace satisfaction.

How is this different from the sick leave already implemented in NM? How does PFML would benefit not only employees but also employers? What is the current status of PFML? This past month, the first two tours of the building took place: one for staff and the other virtually with Tu Voz Digital.This is how we established a series of similar tours that will be taking place in the next few months in order to show the new building and its renovations to several of our audiences. Let’s keep in mind that our new home is under renovation and we are currently in the process of raising funds to continue our efforts to improve the facilities of this building that will house all of our programs. It should be noted that we took all covid measures during these tours.

El primer tour se llevó a  cabo el pasado 6 de agosto y fue dado a miembros del staff de Encuentro de la mano nuestra Directora Ejecutiva, Andrea Plaza y Directora de Desarrollo Julia Cusatis. Como primera actividad, se dio un recorrido por las instalaciones y así el equipo pudo trabajar en la visión de qué lugar ocupará cada programa en el edificio. Como parte de las actividades, el staff también  tuvo la oportunidad de “ reclamar el espacio” y escribir las cosas que se desea sucedan dentro de este nuevo hogar. iEs realmente maravilloso formar parte de este pedazo de historia de nuestra organización!.- comento Mayte Lopez, coordinadora del programa de asistente de salud en el hogar.

The first tour took place on August 6 and was given to members of the Encuentro staff by our Executive Director, Andrea Plaza, and Director of Development, Julia Cusatis. As a first activity, a tour of the facilities was given and thus the team was able to work on the vision of what place each program will occupy in the building. As part of the activities, the staff also had the opportunity to “claim the space” and write down the things that they want to happen within this new home. “It is truly wonderful to be a part of this piece of our organization’s history!”-Mayte Lopez said.

El Segundo tour, tuvo lugar el viernes 13 de agosto  y fue transmitido completamente en vivo en nuestro Fb live. Durante este tour virtual, se contó con la participación de miembros del staff, maestros y fue dirigido por nuestro grupo de periodistas comunitario, Tu Voz Digital.

The second tour took place on Friday, August 13 and was broadcast completely live on our Fb live. During this virtual tour, staff members and teachers participated, and it was led by our group of community journalists, Tu Voz Digital.

La transmisión fue llevada a cabo por Ilse Grijalva, nuestra coordindadora de comunicaciones quien interactúo con las más de 40 personas presentes en el enlace mientras Andrea Plaza, Julia Cusatir, nuestra coordinadora del programa de Asistente de Salud en el Hogar, Mayte Lopez, guiaron el recorrido por las instalaciones a la vez que interactuaba con ambas audiencias. Tu Voz Digital (Marisela Ramirez, Mario Aguilar, Carmen Ruiz, Lucero Tovar, Leslie Padilla y Josefina Gallardo)  jugó un papel muy importante durante este, nuestro primer tour en vivo ya que se dieron a la tarea de capturar el sentir de los presentes quienes respondieron preguntas como: ¿Qué esperas de este nuevo edificio?, ¿Qué es lo que más te emociona de este nuevo edificio? The transmission was carried out by Ilse Grijalva, our communications manager who interacted with the more than 40 people present at the live transmission while Andrea Plaza, Julia Cusatis, and our coordinator of the Home Health Assistant program, Mayte Lopez, guided the tour of the facilities while interacting with both audiences. Your Digital Voice (Marisela Ramirez, Mario Aguilar, Carmen Ruiz, Lucero Tovar, Leslie Padilla and Josefina Gallardo) played a very important role during this, our first live tour, as they undertook the task of capturing the feelings of those present who answered questions such as: What do you expect from this new building?
