Over 225 working immigrant parents and adults successfully completed their hybrid courses: English as a Second Language, Computer Literacy, Citizenship,Small Business Training and Financial Literacy, Home Health Aide Entry-Level Course and Senior Nutrition.

Graduation is a moment of great pride for our students. It is the culmination of a goal that required a lot of sacrifice, as many of our students are not just dedicated to studying, but also have other responsibilities, such as being parents, grandparents, or working two jobs. Despite these challenges, they come to class every day and fulfill their responsibilities as students. Their determination to excel helps them successfully obtain their competition certificates, which marks the start of a new business or the acquisition of a new skill. This can lead to better job opportunities and open doors that were once thought to be closed.

When students come to Encuentro, they are not just here to learn, but to open a new world of possibilities in the United States. This is why graduation is a very special time for Encuentro and our community.

Este curso académico llega a su fin

Este ciclo escolar conluye de manera exitosa para los más de 225 estudiantes quienes concluyeron sus cursos híbridos: inglés como segundo idioma, computación, ciudadanía, capacitación en pequeñas empresas y alfabetización financiera, curso de nivel de entrada para asistente de salud en el hogar y nutrición para personas mayores.

La graduación es un momento de enorme orgullo para nuestros estudiantes ya que marca la culminacion de una meta mas lograda. Tomemos en cuenta que la mayoria de nuestros estudiantes llegna hasta este momento con mucho sacrificios ya que no oslo se dedican a estudiar: muchos son padres de familia, abuelos, inmigrantes trabajdaroes dedicadods a los suyos. Eso hace aun mas desafiante el reto de venir diariamente a sus clases y cumplir con sus responsabilidades como estduiantes. Sin embargo, el deseo de superacio, supera cualquier desafio y con exito logran recibir sus certificados de completicion marcando asi, el inicio de un nuevo negocios, la implementacion de una nueva habilidad aprendida, el paso hacia un mejor trabajo y la apertura de esa puerta que muchos creian cerrada.

Y es que venir a Encuentr no es solo venir a aprender: es abrir un nuevo mundo. Cuando nuestrso estudiantes ingresan por primera vez a las aulas de Encuentro, comienzan a ver nuevas posibilidades en los Estados Unidos. Al graduarse, recibieron sus certificados de logros, celebraron con la comunidad y lograron nuevos sueños para ellos y sus familias.

These leaders graduated from the 2nd cohort of Encuentro’s HHA Leadership Program. Spring is a special time at Encuentro! Each April, student project presentations showcase the fabulous things happening in Encuentro’s classrooms. Classes present what they have learned throughout the year to their families and to the broader Encuentro community by performing role-plays, singing songs, interacting with their audience, and sharing PowerPoint slideshows.

APRENDIENDO EN COMUNIDAD

La primavera es una época especial en Encuentro: cada año en el mes de abril,  los estudiantes de tienen la posibilidad de mostrar las habilidades aprendidas dentro de los salones de Encuentro y esto lo hacen durante las presentaciones de proyectos estudiantiles. Con el apoyo y guia de sus maestros, las clases presentan lo que han aprendido a lo largo del año a sus familias y a la comunidad de Encuentro en general  mediante juegos de roles, interpretació de canciones, interactuando con su audiencia y compartiendo presentaciones de PowerPoint.

En los últimos años, la pandemia de Covid nos obligó a realizar nuestras presentaciones de proyectos en línea, es justo por eso que las presentaciones de este año fueron particularmente especiales ya que finalmente tuvimos la oportunidad de celebrarlas en persona, ademas de que fue la primera vez que pudimos hacerlo en nuestro nuevo edificio!

Estos testimonios de transformación celebran el arduo trabajo y las historias de éxito de nuestros estudiantes mientras desarrollan nuevas habilidades, superando barreras y enriqueciendo a Nuevo México de maneras asombrosas.

Tu Voz Digital te acerca a El Censo 2020

El Censo 2020 se acerca y con él, la oportunidad para que nuestra comunidad sea contada y tomada en cuenta de manera justa. Sin embargo, entre nuestra comunidad aún existen dudas y preguntas en relación a este proceso: ¿Mi información es confidencial? ¿Puedo responder el cuestionario en español? ¿Quién cuenta en el Censo? Estas son solo algunas de las muchas preguntas que existen.

El 1ero de abril es el día del Censo 2020 y el equipo de periodistas comunitarios de Tu Voz Digital de Encuentro les presenta esta  cálida e informativa entrevista con Sergio Martínez, coordinador y representante de las Oficinas del Censo en el Estado de Nuevo México, quien respondió a estas y mas preguntas sobre el Censo y comenta por qué es tan  importante nuestra participación en este proceso cívico.

En la segunda parte de esta conversación, platicamos con la organizadora comunitaria Rosalinda Dorado de nuestra organización aliada, El Centro de Igualdad y Derechos, quien nos comparte estadísticas sobre el censo así como las estrategias que dicha organización está llevando a cabo para promover el censo dentro de nuestra comunidad.

Los resultados del censo también determinan el número de asientos que recibe cada estado en el Congreso y se usan para trazar los distritos legislativos y estatales.

The Census 2020 is coming! This is an important  opportunity for our community to be fairly counted.  However, there are still many questions that our community has regarding the Census:  “Are my answers confidential? Can I answer the questionnaire in my own language? Who counts in the census?” Those are only a few of those questions.

April 1st is the opening day of the 2020 Census and Encuentro’s Tu Voz Digital’s community journalist team brings you a warm and informative interview with Sergio Martínez, coordinator and representative of the Census Offices in the State of New Mexico. Sergio helps answer those and more questions and tell us about  the importance of our participation in this civic process.

In the second part of this conversation we talk to Rosalinda Dorado, community organizer from our partner organization El Centro de Igualdad y Derechos, who is promoting the Census within the immigrant community so we can be fairly counted and we can have the political representation our communities deserve.

The Census is mandated by the Constitution and conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau,(a nonpartisan government agency) every 10 years. The 2020 Census counts the population in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories. 

It is really important to participate in the Census. The census provides essential information for legislators, besides the results determines their representation in Congress, as well as the distribution of federal funds for states and communities. Every year, billions of dollars in federal funding go to hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources based on census data.

The results of the census also determine the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Each home will receive an invitation to respond to a short questionnaire—online, by phone, or by mail.

April 1: By this date, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. Once the invitation arrives, you should respond for your home in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail. When you respond to the census, you’ll tell the Census Bureau where you live as of April 1, 2020.

May – July: Census takers will begin visiting homes that haven’t responded to the 2020 Census to help make sure everyone is counted.

Encuentro Te Acerca al Consulado Mexicano

De los mexicanos que viven fuera de su país, del 90% al 95% residen en Estados Unidos. En un esfuerzo por mejorar la calidad de vida de nuestros paisanos, el gobierno de México cuenta con una red consular de más de cincuenta consulados alrededor de los Estados Unidos, siendo el de Albuquerque el encargado de atender las necesidades de los mexicanos en el norte y centro del Estado de Nuevo México. Esto, bajo el liderazgo de la Cónsul Titular Norma Ang.

En esta edición, el equipo de “Tu Voz Digital” de Encuentro, trae para ustedes una cálida e informativa entrevista de la mano de nuestro periodista comunitario, Mario Aguilar, quien tuvo la oportunidad de conversar con la actual Cónsul de México en Albuquerque, Norma Ang,.En esta entrevista, Ang no solo nos comparte la misión del consulado y su funcionamiento,  sino también la información sobre los requisitos para obtener identificaciones como el pasaporte mexicano, la matrícula consular, así como los beneficios de la doble nacionalidad, traslado de restos a México y los diferentes programas que el gobierno ofrece a nuestros paisanos.

Ninety to ninety-five percent of Mexicans living outside of their country reside in the United States. In an effort to improve the quality of life of our Mexican nationals, the Mexican government has a consular network of more than 50 consulates around the United States.The  Albuquerque-based consulate is in charge of serving the needs of Mexicans in  northern and central parts of New Mexico. All of this, under the leadership of the Titular Consul, Norma Ang.

This blog brings you a warm conversation that Community Journalist Mario Aguilar held with Ms. Norma Ang, current Director of the Mexican Consulate in Albuquerque and the state of New Mexico.  Ms. Ang has held this position for two years, and through this interview, she shares a vision of her role and the services this consulate has the obligation to bring to Mexicans as a representative institution of the Mexican government within the United States.

Ms. Ang not only shares with us the mission of the consulate and its operation, but also informs us on the requirements to obtain identifications such as the Mexican Passport, the consular registration, as well as the benefits of dual citizenship, transfer of remains to Mexico and the different programs that the government offers to our countrymen.

At Encuentro we are dedicated to strengthening our immigrant community through Adult Education, and a part of our mission is to promote social justice in our state;therefore, taking into account that more than 90% of our students are of Mexican origin, our duty is to facilitate access to the information and resources available to them, such as the information on consular services mentioned above.

Every year in October, Encuentro holds one of its most important events: The Dialogos Comunitarios (DC). The DC is a traditional event in Encuentro, full of information, resources, empowerment and unity. This year could not be the exception, but before delving into this year’s summary, let’s learn a little more about the history of this event.

¿Qué son los Diálogos comunitarios y cual es su objetivo?

Los diálogos comunitarios consisten en una serie de pláticas impartidas por invitados oradores de diferentes organizaciones sobre temas específicos.Las pláticas son impartidos a nuestros estudiantes durante sus horario de clase en el mes de octubre con el objetivo de seguir proveyendo oportunidades de información a nuestros estudiantes más allá de las clases que aquí ofrecemos, procurando siempre, que sea información útil, de su interés y para su bienestar.

What are the Dialogos Comunitarios and what is their objective?

The Dialogos Comunitarios consist of a series of talks given by guest speakers from different organizations on specific topics, and are shared with our students during their class schedule in October. Ensuring that the topics of discussion are those of interest, important for our students well-being, and useful information, the objective of our community dialogues is to keep providing informational opportunities to our students beyond the classes we offer.

¿De donde nace la idea de los Diálogos Comunitarios?

Los diálogos comunitarios se llevaron a cabo por primera vez en el año 2012 y nacieron de la necesidad de información que había en nuestra comunidad sobre diversos temas, además de que Encuentro vio en ellos una oportunidad más de lograr la justicia social y el empoderamiento a través de la  información y conocimiento. En sus inicios, el evento era conocido como “Semana Comunitaria” y se invitaban a varias organizaciones a impartir talleres informativos durante las clases de Encuentro, pero eventualmente y debido al éxito, la “Semana Comunitaria” se convirtió también en un espacio de participación e inclusión, en el cual, nuestros estudiantes podian contar su testimonio, interactuar con el orador y participar de manera didáctica convirtiéndose así en “Diálogos Comunitarios”.

Los temas que se han impartido en la historia de los “Diálogos Comunitarios” han sido diferentes cada año, siempre diversos y del interés público como: “Las mujeres  y el Trabajo Doméstico”, “Salud Mental en la Comunidad Inmigrante”, “Educación temprana”, “Derechos Laborales”, “Acoso Sexual”, entre otros. 

Este año 2019, Encuentro contó con la presencia de 7 organizaciones de diferentes ámbitos quienes se dieron cita los días 16 y 17 de octubre en nuestras diversas clases para informar a nuestros estudiantes sobre temas tan importantes y actuales como El censo, El Bilingüismo, Compra de casa y más.

Where does the idea of ​​Dialogos Comunitarios come from?

The community dialogues were held for the first time in 2012 and were born from the need for information in our community on various topics, in addition to those needs Encuentro observed from the students. The DC are also another opportunity to achieve social justice and empowerment through information and knowledge. In the beginning, the event was known as “Semana Comunitaria” where several organizations were invited to give informative workshops during our classes, but eventually and due to its success, the “Semana Comunitaria” also became a space for participation and inclusion, in which our students could tell their testimony, interact with the speaker and participate in a didactic way, thus becoming “Community Dialogues”.

The topics that have been taught in the history of “Community Dialogues” have been different every year, always diverse and of public interest such as: “Women and Domestic Work”, “Mental Health in the Immigrant Community”, “Early Education ”,“ Labor Rights ”,“ Sexual Harassment ”, among others.

This year 2019, Encuentro invited seven organizations from different fields who gathered on October 16 and 17 in our classes to inform our students about such important and current issues as The Census, Bilingualism, and more.

El CENSO 2020: 

El Censo 2020 se acerca y este año contamos con la presencia de la Profesora Nancy López, Socióloga y Directora del Instituto Para el Estudio de “Raza” y Justicia Social de la Universidad de Nuevo México, quien nos informo todo lo relacionado con el censo: desde la logística hasta el porqué es tan importante para nuestra comunidad responder ya que de ello depende la cantidad de recursos que lleguen a nuestras comunidades.

The 2020 Census is approaching and this year we had the presence of Professor Nancy López, Sociologist and Director of the Institute for the Study of “Race” and Social Justice of the University of New Mexico, who informed us about everything related to the census: logistics, and why it is so important for our community to respond since the amount of resources that reach our communities depends on it.

El Bilingüismo y sus Ventajas:

Este tema fue llevado de la mano de la Dra. Rebecca Blum-Martínez, de Colegio de Educación, Universidad de Nuevo México, con quien nuestros estudiantes platicaron sus experiencias como aprendices de un segundo idioma como es el ingles asi como sus testimoniales de cómo es la comunicación con las nuevas generaciones quienes dominan dos idiomas.

This topic was carried out by Dr. Rebecca Blum-Martínez, from the College of Education, University of New Mexico, with whom our students discussed their experiences as English language learners as well as their testimonials of how it is their communication with the new generations who master two languages.

Compra de Casa, un Sueño Alcanzable:

Para este tema, invitamos a la organización Homewise quienes se especializa en compra de casas y temas de credito. De la mano de Sandy Hernandez, nuestros estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de despejar sus dudas en cuanto a los requisitos para ser comprador de vivienda por primera vez  e incluso, muchos de ellos se dieron cuenta que la compra de una casa es un sueño que se puede hacer realidad independientemente de su estatus!

For this subject, we invited the organization Homewise that specializes in home buying and related credit issues. Sandy Hernandez was our speaker and thanks to her information our students had the opportunity to clear their doubts about the requirements to be a first time home buyer and even many of them realized that buying a house is a dream that can come true regardless of status!

Relaciones Saludables:

Enlace comunitario ha sido organización aliada de Encuentro por años, mismos en los que ha colaborado en los Diálogos Comunitarios. Este año, el area de prevencion de Enlace, vino a platicar con nuestros estudiantes puntos importantes sobre como mantener relaciones saludables con las personas que nos rodean, que es un conflicto, porque es bueno y cómo manejarlo. Un tema que resultó bastante interesante para nuestra comunidad, quienes enriquecieron el diálogo con sus experiencias personales. 

Enlace Comunitario has been an Encuentro allied for years, same time in which they have collaborated in  the Community Dialogues. This year, their prevention department, came to discuss with our students important points on how to maintain healthy relationships with the people around us, what is a conflict, and how to handle it. A topic that was quite interesting for our community, who enriched the dialogue with their personal experiences.

Carga Publica:

En esta ocasión, el Centro de Leyes y Pobreza de Nuevo México fueron  los encargados de platicar con nuestros estudiantes sobre el tema de la carga pública, que significa, quienes se ven afectados por el uso de que beneficios, así como lo último en el tema. Hubieron bastantes preguntas que fueron despejadas en el momento por la abogada de inmigración Teague González.

On this occasion, the New Mexico Law and Poverty Center was in charge of talking with our students about the issue of public charge, which means, who are affected by the use of what benefits, as well as the latest in the subject . There were quite a few questions that were cleared at the time by immigration lawyer Teague González.

Plan de Protección Familiar:

Con la presencia de la organización Los Cafecitos, nuestros estudiantes tomaron nota y despejaron sus dudas en cuanto al tema de protección familiar en caso de una deportación, los poderes notariales que necesitarás tener en mano así como los documentos necesarios para proteger a tu familia en caso de una eventualidad de esta índole.

Juventud sin Violencia:

Tema desarrollado por la organización Enlace y su grupo de jóvenes, muchos de nuestros estudiantes encontraron interesante el aprender sobre como entender mejor a sus hijos adolescentes así como los consejos y estrategias que pueden poner en práctica con ellos para alejarlos de una relación violenta.

This topic was carried out by the organization Enlace Comunitario and their youth leaders, many of our students found interesting to learn how to better understand their teenage children as well as the tips and strategies they can put into practice with them to get them away from a violent relationship.

We know as immigrants arriving in the United States, one of the most important steps we must take is to learn English. Speaking English opens the door to endless opportunities in a world where English is already strongly globalized, in addition to the fact that it is essential for our development, not only professionally but also personally.However, whether due to family or work, learning English becomes a difficult step for many people who often do not have time to go to school to learn the language.

In  this blog, our team of community journalists from Tu Voz Digital, bring us an interesting interview with Queta Lindenberg who has been teaching English at Encuentro for more than 4 years and talks about the main challenges our community faces when learning English, as well as its benefits.

Es por esto que en esta edición, nuestro equipo de periodismo comunitario de Tu Voz Digital de Encuentro trae para ti una cálida entrevista informativa con Mayte López, coordinadora del programa de Asistente de Salud en el Hogar de Encuentro.En esta entrevista, Mayte nos adentra al mundo de la noble profesión de cuidar de personas de la tercera edad y con discapacidad y nos explica en qué consiste el curso, quién lo puede tomar así como los múltiples beneficios derivados de este programa, no solo para la comunidad, sino también para los estudiantes quienes después de graduados, tiene la oportunidad incluso de crear su propio negocio gracias a las oportunidades de preparación que Encuentro sigue ofreciendo, aún después de graduados.

English Summary

Encuentro’s Home Health Aide (HHA) program was created to respond to our community’s need for a workforce prepared and dedicated to carrying out the noble profession of caring for the elderly and people with disabilities. According to statistics from the New Mexico Caregiver’s Coalition, it is estimated that by 2020 New Mexico will be the 4th state nationwide with the largest population of people over 65 years of age, thus increasing the need for this workforce in our state. Encuentro is the only organization in the state to have a program that grants a home health aide certificate in Spanish in collaboration with CNM.

That is why in this edition our community journalists from Tu voz Digital brings you a warm and informative interview with Mayte López, coordinator of Encuentro’s Home Health Aide (HHA) program. In this interview, Mayte takes us into the world of the noble profession of caring for the elderly and people with disabilities and explains what the course is and who can take it. She also discusses the multiple benefits derived from this program, not only for the community, but also for the students who have the opportunity to start their own business thanks to the opportunities that Encuentro continues to offer even after their graduation.

            ¡Fue gracias también al trabajo de nuestros voluntarios que las registraciones fueron todo un éxito!

Classes have started at Encuentro, and with them a world of learning and opportunities for our nearly 300 students who gathered during the first week of August to register for this new 2019-2020 school year. All of our students had the opportunity to choose between beginning, intermediate, and advanced English classes; citizenship, GED math, finance, business and computing classes.

                     It was also thanks to the work of our volunteers that the registrations were a success!

Fue durante la primera semana de clases, cuando nuestros estudiantes recibieron una orientación completa con información más detallada sobre nuestra misión en Encuentro, los principios universales que nos rigen como organización e información sobre diferentes servicios y programas que tenemos abiertos para el público en general como nuestro programa de periodismo comunitario (Tu Voz Digital)  o de navegación de recursos, Pathways. Así mismo, los estudiantes también tuvieron la oportunidad de convivir entre sí, conocer a sus maestros y al equipo de Encuentro quienes dia a dia trabajan arduamente en logística, currículum y estrategias para que las clases sean todo un éxito.

Our students received a complete orientation during the first week of classes with detailed information about our mission at Encuentro, the universal principles that govern us as an organization, and information about the different services and programs that we have open to the general public like our Community Journalism program (Tu voz digital), or  Pathways, our resource navigation program. In addition, the students also had the opportunity to get to know each other, meet their teachers and Encuentro’s staff who work hard every day in logistics, curriculum and strategies to make the classes a success.

Esperamos que este año este lleno de aprendizaje en su camino y que, gracias a las herramientas que Encuentro les dará, sean muchas las oportunidades de desarrollo que encuentren y sigan creciendo como líderes comunitarios listos para apoyar  a sus familias y empoderar a sus comunidades a través de la información y conocimiento.

We know that as immigrants and as entrepreneurs, we face many challenges when starting up our own business. We have the motivation, but many times cannot rely on the necessary tools to get started or follow through with our business plan. For this reason, Encuentro created the “Starting Your Own Business” and, so that you can know more about it, our team of community journalists fromTu Voz Digital de Encuentro, bring you an interesting interview with the teacher Gerardo de Luna. Mr de Luna is the instructor of the class on business that will be given this school year 2019 – 2020, and who in this interview, tells us everything related to the course: what the class consists of, what students can expect  during the class, and what they will get out in the end. 

 Also, you will hear the testimony of Alexis López, a student of a prior class, who will tell us his experiences as a student and as an owner or his own business.  Enjoy!

In this edition,the production team of Tu Voz Digital de Encuentro, shares interesting interviews to help us better understand the migratory situation currently happening on the border with the refugee caravans, as well as the work that organizations in New Mexico are doing to support our people. Our community journalists Nancy Duran and Josue Gonzalez had the opportunity to conduct interviews on the border between Juarez and El Paso, TX. and they bring us this audio in which we will hear the feelings of two Central and South American immigrants during their journey to reach the United States. Likewise, they also had the opportunity to talk with Laura Garcia, a lawyer with the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center, who tells us about the work they are doing as an organization in support of the immigrant community.
