Last Saturday, November 11, more than 200 members of our community, including students, allies, and volunteers, gathered at the Encuentro facilities for our third annual fundraising event “Friendsgiving 2023: Celebrating the Day of the Dead”. The event was filled with color, music, and joy as attendees danced to the music of Mala Maña, created community, and supported our mission through raffles. In this event, Encuentro decided to pay homage to one of the most significant traditions of the Mexica culture: Day of the Dead. This colorful tradition honors the memory of loved ones who have passed on the journey before us.

El evento comenzó a las 6 pm con la apertura de nuestra barra de nachos, aguas frescas así como el champurrado y pan de dulce propio de la época. Los asistentes pudieron disfrutar de la música en vivo de una de las bandas locales de música versátil, Mala Maña, quienes nos pusieron a bailar a ritmo de cumbias y sones alegres. El evento también contó con la participación de miembros de la comunidad quienes tuvieron micrófono abierto y el escenario libre para compartir sus talentos cantando. Las rifas llegaron en la parte final del evento donde, entre otras cosas, se rifaron artículos donados por miembros de la comunidad como artículos de decoración, tarjetas de regalo y hasta servicios de spa!

The event started at 6 pm with the opening of our nacho bar, fresh drinks, and the traditional champurrado and sweet bread. Attendees enjoyed live music from Mala Maña, a local band that played cumbias and cheerful sounds. Community members also had the opportunity to showcase their singing talents on the open microphone and free stage. Finally, at the end of the event, there were raffles for various items donated by community members, including decorative items, gift cards, and even spa services.

Encuentro agradece a todos los asistentes al evento, a las personas que participaron con su donación, que compartieron su talento, que cantaron y bailaron con nosotros…gracias totales! El evento logro recaudar casi $5,000 dolares los cuales, apoyarán los programas de educación para adultos reconocidos a nivel nacional de Encuentro. iGRACIAS!

Ole desempeña un papel fundamental impulsando campañas y promoviendo servicios en diferente areas como: Ciudadania, derechos laborales, reforma de la democracia y educación infantil.

Tu voz digital se dio a la tarea de entrevistar a Ole con el fin de conocer su trabajo, las historias de su gente y su trabajo de abogacía. Ademas, compartieron con nosotros detalles de la campaña #VoteYesForKids. Esta campaña busca la aprobación de la primera enmienda para destinar fondos a la educación preescolar y a la mejora de sueldos para maestros quienes llegan a ganar menos de $15.00 dlls la hora. Ademas, apoya la salud económica de nuestra comunidad, ya que es bien sabido que el costo de educación preescolar es más alto que incluso, colegiaturas del colegio haciendo que las familias paguen hasta 1,000 al mes por educación temprana. “…cuando llegan a edad escolar, las habilidades que llevan los niños (que tuvieron educación preescolar) tienen son grandisimas, los números lo dicen… por eso es nuestra lucha, para que los niños no tengan que decidir entre mandarlos a educación temprana o pagar algo mas”, comento Matilde MIranda, organizadora de educación temprana de Ole en entrevista.

OLÉ is a nonprofit community organization that  has been dedicated to working with New Mexico families to strengthen our communities through issue-based campaigning and electoral engagement to ensure a safe and equitable future for our community. Ole plays a fundamental role promoting campaigns and promoting services in different areas such as: Citizenship, labor rights, democracy reform and early childhood education.

Tu Voz Digital  interviewed Ole in order to learn about their work, the stories of their people and their advocacy in the community. Ole also shared with us details of the #VoteYesForKids campaign. This campaign seeks the approval of the first amendment to allocate funds to preschool education and to improve salaries for teachers who earn less than $15.00 dlls an hour. In addition, it supports the economic health of our community, as it is well known that the cost of preschool education is higher than even college tuition causing families to pay up to 1,000 a month for early education. “…when they reach school age, the skills that children (who had preschool education) have are great, the numbers say so… that is why it is our fight, so that children do not have to decide between sending them to early education or pay for something else,” said Matilde MIranda, Ole’s early education organizer.

Encuentro is proud to announce that the dream of purchasing our first building has become a reality!/ iEncuentro se enorgullece en anunciar que el sueño de comprar un nuevo edificio se convirtió en una realidad!

El nuevo edificio, ubicado en 907 4th Street SW, está en el corazón del barrio Barelas en  Albuquerque, tiene una dimensión de 7200 pies cuadrados y ampliará el número de aulas a cinco, lo cual no solo nos permitirá albergar todos programas de Encuentro en un solo lugar,  pero también proveer cuidado de niños en sitio, oficinas para nuestro personal el cual va en crecimiento  y nos permitirá  proporcionar oficinas para organizaciones aliadas que ofrecen recursos esenciales para nuestras familias inmigrantes.. Los planos arquitectónicos están completos, la  renovación ya está en camino y hemos asegurado al contratista quién guiará el proceso de remodelación,el cual esperamos que dure hasta fin de año. En los próximos meses, compartiremos más detalles acerca de las renovaciones así como información acerca de cómo colaborar, futuros planes y eventos.   

The new building, located at 907 4th Street SW, is in the heart of Albuquerque’s Barelas neighborhood. It is 7200 square feet and will expand the number of classrooms to five, accommodate all of Encuentro’s programs, on-site childcare, offices for our growing staff, and provide satellite offices to partner organizations offering essential resources to our immigrant families for years to come. The architectural drawings are complete, renovation plans are ready to go, and we have secured the contractor who will guide the remodel process, which we expect to take us through the end of the year. In the months to come, we will share updates on renovation as well as future plans and events and how you can contribute!

La renovación de nuestro edificio comenzó el pasado mes de Julio iAqui algunas fotos!

The renovation of our building began last July. Here are some photos!

En este nuevo edificio Encuentro albergara TODOS sus programa bajo un mismo techo: se tendrá un salon de computadoras, mas cuatro salones donde se concentraran las clases de Ingles, ciudadania, Finanzas etc. Dichos salones estarán en el centro del edificio y contaran con paredes movedizas las cuales podrán ser removidas a conveniencia. Esto significa que al poderse mover, permitirá tener un espacio abierto que se usara como sala de usos múltiples para capacitaciones de grupos grandes y eventos comunitarios. Con esto, Encuentro busca seguir con su esencia de unidad y colectividad

Before our new building, many of Encuentro’s classes were hosted off site. With this new building, Encuentro will be able to house ALL of its programs in one location. There will be a permanent computer classroom, along with 4 other rooms that will host our English, Citizenship and other classes. These 4 classrooms will have moving walls that allow us to create an open space for a multi-purpose room for large group trainings and community-wide events. This feature is important for Encuentro to continue with its essence of unity and collectivity.

Cada oficina contara con una ventana que permitirá recibir luz natural, iTendremos mucha luz! (¿De quién crees que será está oficina? Pista: Muchas entrevistas se llevarán a cabo ahí)

Each office will have a window that will allow it to receive natural light. It will be a house full of light!  (Whose office do you think this will be? Hint: many interviews will take place there!)

Nuestro gran evento anual “Comparte el Amor” fue todo un éxito! Gracias a quienes nos acompañaron a celebrar nuestro décimo aniversario! Contamos con la participación de mas de 100 personas quienes, virtualmente a través de Zoom y Fb Live, celebraron con nosotros  la diversidad, la equidad, la inclusion y nuestros logros como comunidad.

Las ganancias del evento apoyaran los programas de educación y desarrollo profesional para adultos de Encuentro, los cuales, son reconocidos a nivel nacional e incluyen: inglés como segundo idioma, ciudadanía, creación de pequeñas empresas y capacitación para asistentes de salud en el hogar. Este año académico, su apoyo ayudará a fortalecer la alfabetización digital y la integración en los programas de Encuentro y hará posible reducir la brecha digital que ha marginado cada vez más a nuestra comunidad de inmigrantes.

Our virtual “Share the Love” event was a success! Thank you for being part of our 10th Anniversary celebration! We had the participation of more than 100 people who, virtually through Zoom and Fb Live, celebrated diversity, equity, inclusion and our achievements as a community.

Proceeds from the event will support Encuentro’s nationally recognized adult education and career development programs including English as a Second Language, Citizenship, Small Business, and Home Health Aide Training. This academic year, your support will help strengthen digital literacy and integration across Encuentro’s programs and makes it possible to narrow the digital divide that has increasingly marginalized our immigrant community.

Este evento familiar ofrece entretenimiento en vivo, comida deliciosa y diversión para toda la familia. iÚnase a nosotros mientras celebramos y agradecemos las muchas contribuciones que los estudiantes de Encuentro hacen en nuestra comunidad!  Las ganancias de este evento apoyaran los programas de educación para adultos y desarrollo profesional galardonados y reconocidos a nivel nacional de Encuentro.

Este divertido evento se llevará cabo el Sábado, 8 de Febrero del 2020 en punto de las 6pm en South Valley Academy. Venta de boletos comienza el 13 de enero, 2020. iAcompáñanos y comparte el amor!

Love is in the air!  In commemoration of Encuentro’s ninth year working to engage Latino immigrant families in educational opportunities that build skills for economic and social justice,  we are excitedly gearing up to celebrate, our second annual Share the Love Loteria Night!

This family-friendly event features live entertainment, delicious food and fun for the whole family. Join us as we celebrate  the many contributions that Encuentro students and immigrants make in our community. Proceeds from this event supports Encuentro’s award-winning, nationally-recognized adult education and career development programs. 

This fun community-wide event will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 6pm at South Valley Academy. Ticket sales begin on January 13, 2020.  Join us and share the love!
