Encuentro Welcomes Leah Steimel as Career Development Director!

Leah ha colaborado con Encuentro como consultora para el programa de Asistente de Salud en el hogar y hoy, se integra como directora de tiempo completo para seguir apoyando su evolución.

Leah has collaborated with Encuentro as a consultant for the Home Health Aide Program and today she is the full-time Director cultivating its continued evolution.

CONOCE A LEAH/ MEET LEAH

Nacida en Kansas y radicada en Albuquerque desde 1995, Leah tiene una Maestría en Salud Pública de la Universidad de Tulane en Nueva Orleans, Luisiana y cuenta con una amplia experiencia en roles de liderazgo y consultoría con organizaciones sin fines de lucro y entidades gubernamentales enfocadas en promover la salud comunitaria y abordar las disparidades de la misma. Antes de ser consultora, Leah se desempeñó como directora ejecutiva de dos organizaciones que prestan servicios a inmigrantes y ocupó varios cargos en el Centro de Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad de Nuevo México.

Leah was born and raised in Kansas, and moved to Albuquerque in 1995. Leah holds a Master in Public Health from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana and has an extensive background in leadership and consulting roles with nonprofit organizations and government entities focused on promoting community health and addressing disparities. Before consulting, she served as an executive director for two immigrant-serving organizations and held various roles at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.

Su experiencia trabajando con Encuentro se remonta al año 2015 cuando colaboró con la organización como consultora para co-crear el curso de capacitación inicial de Asistente de Salud en el Hogar. Desde entonces, ha desempeñado un papel crucial en su crecimiento y evolución, incluyendo también la creación de EnCasa Care Connections, un registro que conecta a cuidadores altamente calificados con familias que buscan atención en el hogar, y Frontline Workers Collaborative, un proyecto de defensa que involucra a aliados en la identificación de recursos y la mejora de las estrategias de navegación para las personas mayores.

Her experience working with Encuentro dates back to 2015 when she collaborated with the organization as a consultant to co-create the original HHA Entry-level training course. Since then, she has played a crucial role in shaping its continued growth and evolution, including the launch of EnCasa Care Connections, a matching registry connecting highly qualified caregivers to families seeking in-home care, and the Frontline Workers Collaborative, a peer advocacy project that engages partners in identifying resources and improving navigation strategies for seniors.

La amplia experiencia de Leah en el desarrollo e implementación de programas de capacitación, gestión de equipos y relaciones publicas, la convierten en la líder perfecta para ayudar a crecer y expandir este programa reconocido a nivel nacional.

Q&A

¿Qué te inspiró a seguir una carrera en salud comunitaria? Mis padres estaban muy involucrados en actividades cívicas y de construcción comunitaria asi como en todo lo relacionado con cambiar cosas que eran injustas para las personas que los rodeaban. Fueron miembros de juntas directivas, activistas políticos y voluntarios toda su vida. Siempre quise ser enfermera, pero tenía miedo de las ciencias, así que me dediqué a la salud pública o la salud comunitaria, lo cual fue una muy buena opción para mí.
What inspired you to pursue a career in community health? My parents were very engaged in civic and community-building activities. They worked to change things that were unfair for people around them. They were board members, political activists, and volunteers all of their lives. I always wanted to be a nurse, but was afraid of the hard sciences, so I went into public health or community health, which was a good fit for me.

¿Qué es lo que más te entusiasma en tu nuevo rol como directora de desarrollo de carreras? Este puesto me da la oportunidad de ver el programa HHA en su papel dentro de la estructura organizacional y el ecosistema de Encuentro, así como el papel de Encuentro en nuestra comunidad. Fue fantástico trabajar como consultor para el programa, pero este puesto significa que tendré que perfeccionar y hacer crecer el programa en sincronía con la cultura y los procesos de desarrollo de la organización. ¡Y todo eso me emociona mucho!
What are you most excited about in your new role as a HHA Director? This position gives me the opportunity to view the HHA program in its role within the organizational structure and the ecosystem of Encuentro, as well as Encuentro’s role in our community. It was great working as a consultant for the program, but this position means I will need to hone and grow the program in sync with the organization’s culture and developmental processes. This is exciting for me!

¿Cómo piensas aprovechar tu experiencia pasada para respaldar y mejorar nuestro programa HHA? He estado involucrada en el desarrollo y la implementación del programa HHA durante varios años, lo que hace que llegar a este nuevo puesto sea una experiencia menos estresante, ¡sin duda! Sin embargo, no he estado involucrada en las actividades diarias ni en muchas de las decisiones sobre el programa durante los últimos años, ya que Encuentro contrató personal y creó infraestructura administrativa para el programa. Primero quiero aprender de los miembros de mi equipo cómo visualizan las necesidades y direcciones futuras para el programa, y analisar los desafíos que tenemos por delante. How do you intend to leverage your past experience to support and enhance our HHA program? I’ve been involved in the development and implementation of the HHA program for several years, which makes coming into this new position a less stressful experience, certainly! But I haven’t been involved in the day to day activities and many of the decisions about the program over the past few years as Encuentro has hired staff and created administrative infrastructure for the program. I want to first learn from my team members how they envision needs and future directions for the program, and what they see as the challenges before us. I’ve been putting lots of thought into how to remove my consultant “hat” as I step into this position.

The early years of a child’s life are very important for his or her health and development. Healthy development means that children of all abilities, are able to grow up where their social, emotional and educational needs are met. Having a safe and loving home and spending time with family―playing, singing, reading, and talking―are very important. Learn more about how can we support our little ones during their development and what strategies can we implement to help them throught Tu Voz digital talked about all this with Rocio Perales, early intervention specialist at “Inspirations Clinic”. Inspirations is an early intervention program that is contracted with the New Mexico Early Childhood Education & Care Department to independently provide an array of early intervention services. The Family Infant Toddler Program is part of the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act Part C services for children of ages birth to three years. Inspirations’ services are governed by New Mexico’s Service Definitions and Standards for Part C services. Services are funded through New Mexico Medicaid and New Mexico State General Funds and services are offered in Spanish, which makes it accessible to our immigrant community.

Community Build Day

In late 2021 the Healthy Here Active Living Group met with Encuentro staff to discuss the repurposing and revitalization of the parking lots on their new site (904 4th St SW. 87102) with the goal of providing an outdoor environment that better supports the health and well-being of their staff, clients and the wider community. The group decided to initiate a pilot project that will deploy temporary, flexible “pop-up” landscaping elements that would be “do-able” and stimulate interest and action for more permanent landscaping features in the future. The materials and supplies for the “pop-up” project will be funded by the AARP Community Challenge Grant awarded to Healthy Here in 2021. Community outreach, site clean-up, and installation will be shared by Healthy Here partners, Encuentro NM, and volunteers from the community.

On Community Build Day we will be “popping up” a raised bed garden, a pallet patio, a wellness path, and a kiosk with information on walking connections to neighborhood destinations. We will bring wheelbarrows, stock tanks, enriched garden soil, pallets, seeds, rakes, shovels, paint, rollers, hoses, drills, saws and hammers. Throughout the morning there will also be space and time for coffee, snacks and community engagement around the longer term goal of creating spaces of community wellness and pride as Encuentro sets roots, grows and blossoms.

THE DAY HAS ARRIVED! We are ready for “Community Build Day” and we would like to invite you and our community members to join us on Friday, February 25^th from 9:00-1:00 at the new Encuentro site, 907 4^th St. SW, followed by a celebratory lunch hosted by Healthy Here!

Los niños con problemas de aprendizaje ven, oyen y entienden las cosas de manera diferente. Esto puede generar problemas para aprender nueva información y habilidades, y ponerlas en uso. Los tipos más comunes de discapacidades de aprendizaje involucran problemas con la lectura, la escritura, las matemáticas, el razonamiento, la comprensión auditiva y el habla. Children with learning disabilities see, hear, and understand things in a different way. This can lead to trouble with learning new information and skills and can affect their quality of life. The most common types of learning disabilities involve problems with reading, writing, math, reasoning, listening, and speaking and It’s not always easy to identify learning disabilities. TVD Interview: Hablemos sobre la vacuna contra el Covid-19

La pandemia del covid 19 ha matado a millones de personas a nivel mundial y ha cambiado radicalmente el estilo de vida del mundo entero orillándonos a vivir una nueva “normalidad” en la cual el uso de mascarillas y el distanciamiento social es obligatorio. Sin embargo, una luz de esperanza llegó con el desarrollo de vacunas contra este mortal virus, las cuales, ya están siendo distribuidas a nivel mundial.

En el Estado de Nuevo Mexico, la jornada de vacunación comenzó el pasado mes de diciembre siendo los trabajadores de la salud, los primeros en recibir las dosis de Pfizer o moderna. El proceso de vacunación camina a marchas forzadas con el fin de vacunar a toda la población, sin embargo, aún existen muchos mitos y tabúes en relación al tema. ¿Qué tan efectiva es la vacuna?,¿es obligatorio ponérmela?,¿Qué efectos secundarios tiene?, ¿Me ocasionará problemas a largo plazo? Estas y más preguntas son las que el Dr. Jesse Banners de las clínicas First Choice, respondió al equipo de periodistas comunitario de Tu Voz Digital en su entrevista del mes de febrero.

The COVID-19 pandemic has killed millions of people worldwide and has radically changed the lifestyle of the entire world, leading us to live a new “normal” in which the use of masks and social distancing is mandatory. However, a light of hope came with the development of vaccines against this deadly virus, which are already being distributed worldwide.

In the State of New Mexico, the vaccination journey began last December with health workers being the first ones to receive the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. The vaccination process proceeds at a forced march in order to vaccinate the entire population, however, there are still many myths and taboos about the subject. How effective is the vaccine? Is it mandatory to get it? What side effects does it have? Will it cause me long-term problems? Las excusiones y caminatas al bosque son una gran opcion de convivencia y salud para nosotros y nuestras familias. Tambien para aprender a apreciar la naturaleza alrededor de nuestra ciudad de Albuquerque. Sierra Club ofrece esta oportunidad y Cecilia Chavez Beltran nos habla de esto.

Journalist Alma Martinez interviews Cecilia Chavez Beltrán on behalf of the Sierra Club which is an organization that focuses on the environment. Cecilia has newly started a club where people of all backgrounds can participate and lead excursions through New Mexico’s unique natural landscapes. This is an opportunity where families can experience nature with a community of people who are interested in the outdoors. Cecilia’s role is to help organize the excursions by inviting people and leading the walks herself. She describes the atmosphere as a place to replenish, re-focus, and relax while “disfrutando el medio ambiente” through relatively easy hikes in places such as the Bosque or the Sandia Mountains. She emphasizes that these events are free of charge and families/kids are more than welcome. The next excursion will be through the petroglyphs, therefore participants will receive a learning experience as well as exercise. Coming prepared with appropriate shoes, water, and sun protection is highly advised. These events are on-going. Compartiendo Nuestra Visión

Parte de nuestra comunidad espera en Encuentro para recibir su examen de visión gratuito

El Sábado 4 Abril Encuentro y El Club de Leones de Nuevo México organizaron un evento en donde pudimos proveer exámenes de la visión y lentes gratis a las personas de la comunidad.

Miembros de El Club de Leones trabajando en los exámenes de visión

El evento fue todo un éxito y en total pudimos servir a 130 personas incluyendo a niños.

El examen de visión proveído también incluyó un examen de detección de las enfermedades de los ojos glaucoma, enfermedad diabética de los ojos y la degeneración macular relacionada con la edad.

Sin la ayuda de nuestros valiosos voluntarios este evento no se hubiera llevado a cabo ya que la mayoría de las personas atendidas no hablaban inglés y nuestros voluntarios bilingües hicieron posible las consultas entre doctores de habla Inglés y los clientes de habla español.

De parte de todo el personal de Encuentro queremos dar un agradecimiento especial a Ernest B. Martin, Carol Marshall, Dr. Deborah Moy, Miriam Stucker, Shirley Milton, Luckey Sells y todos sus voluntarios.

Este evento fue una gran experiencia para todos y le queremos dar gracias a todos los participantes. Esperamos hacer este un evento anual.

Sharing Our Vision

Encuentro and the Lions Club of New Mexico organized an event where we provided free vision screenings and free glasses to people in the community.

The vision screenings also included a screening of eye diseases like glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and age related macular degeneration.

Without the help of our valued volunteers this event would not have happened as most of the people that were seen did not speak English and our bilingual volunteers were able to do the consultations between English speaking doctors and Spanish-speaking clients.

On behalf of all Encuentro staff we want to give special thanks to Ernest B. Martin, Carol Marshall, Dr. Deborah Moy, Miriam Stucker, Shirley Milton, Luckey Sells and all their volunteers.

This event was a great experience for everyone and we want to thank all participants. We hope to make this an annual event.
