Las ventanillas de salud tienen un impacto profundo en las comunidades migrantes. No solo ofrecen acceso a información crucial sobre salud, sino que también brindan educación sobre temas de prevención y conectan a los migrantes con recursos locales. El personal bilingüe que labora en estas ventanillas supera las barreras lingüísticas y culturales, lo que es fundamental para abordar asuntos de salud mental, que a menudo son desatendidos. Además, estas iniciativas promueven la colaboración con organizaciones locales, empoderando a las comunidades para que tomen decisiones informadas sobre su salud y bienestar. In 2002, the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs launched a pioneering initiative known as Ventanillas de Salud. Initially established in the Consulates of San Diego and San Francisco, these windows have evolved into an essential resource for the Mexican migrant community in the United States. Their purpose is to facilitate access to primary and preventive health services, while promoting a culture of prevention among Mexicans and their families.

La Ventanilla de Salud have a profound impact on migrant communities. They not only provide access to critical health information but also offer education on prevention topics and connect migrants with local resources. The bilingual staff working at these windows helps overcome linguistic and cultural barriers, which is crucial for addressing often-overlooked mental health issues. Furthermore, these initiatives promote collaboration with local organizations, empowering communities to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. In this way, the health windows serve as an essential pillar for improving the quality of life for migrants in the country.

Our dedicated community journalists from Tu Voz Digital had the opportunity to engage in a conversation with Mónica Toquinto, the coordinator of the Ventanilla de salud at the Mexican Consulate in Albuquerque. Con eso en mente, Encuentro se unio al colaborativo Color Theory y, con el objetivo de crear una red de organizaciones comunitarias e individuos dedicados a brindar apoyo integral a los empresarios de color, la teoría del color se creó para transformar el sistema de propiedad empresarial que prioriza los negocios privilegiados de propiedad blanca en un sistema que prioriza la equidad racial y Brinda oportunidades para que las personas de color con bajos ingresos salgan de la pobreza y se acerquen a la agencia económica. De igual manera, se desarrolló el programa de clases de pequeños negocios y finanzas de la mano de WESST, organización dedicada a la asesoría de individuos para la creación de sus negocios. “A través de esta colaboración (Encuentro y WESST, hemos desarrollado una formación empresarial únicaque se enfoca en servir a los inmigrantes de habla hispana”. dice Adriana Martínez, gerente del programa Money Learning Lab y maestra de la clase de pequeñas empresas de Encuentro. “La colaboración de WESST y Encuentro nos permite unir nuestra experiencia para servir mejor a nuestra comunidad inmigrante y nos brinda la oportunidad de brindar educación significativa y de calidad.”

The Latino community in the United States is contributing significantly to the country’s small business sector, with a growing number of entrepreneurs emerging from the immigrant population. Stanford University’s research has shown that Latino business owners have experienced a remarkable 34% growth over the past decade, far outpacing the 1% increase for all business owners nationwide. Despite the many challenges they face, including systemic racism, language barriers, and a shortage of resources and information, more and more Latinos are seeking loans to expand or start their businesses. These entrepreneurs are displaying tremendous resilience and determination as they work to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.

With that in mind, Encuentro joined the Color Theory collaborative, and with the goal of creating a network of community organizations and individuals dedicated to providing comprehensive support to entrepreneurs of color, Color Theory was created to transform the business ownership system that prioritizes privileged white-owned businesses in a system that prioritizes racial equity; and Provides opportunities for low-income people of color to lift themselves out of poverty and closer to economic agency. Similarly, the program of small business and finance classes was developed by WESST, an organization dedicated to advising individuals for the creation of their businesses. “Through this collaboration (Encuentro and WESST), we have developed a unique entrepreneurship training that focuses on serving Spanish-speaking immigrants,” says Adriana Martinez, Money Learning Lab program manager and teacher of Encuentro’s small business class. “The WESST and Encuentro collaboration allows us to pool our expertise to better serve our immigrant community and gives us the opportunity to provide quality, meaningful education.”

In an interview with Tu voz digital, Adriana Martinez discusses the power of entrepreneurship, the barriers our community faces, and how WESST supports our community in realizing their entrepreneurial dreams. She also talks about working together with Encuentro. The interview also celebrates the success stories of Encuentro student entrepreneurs who have grown their businesses with the support of their classes. Norma Retana of Norma’s Cleaning company shares how she obtained her business license to expand her business, and Karen, a daycare owner, now empowers her classmates in expanding their businesses. La sesión legislativa de NM terminó y con ella, la decisión sobre muchas propuestas que afectan de una manera u otra a nuestra comunidad. Durante las sesiones legislativas, miembros de la comunidad de NM tienen la oportunidad de abogar u oponerse  a los proyectos de ley que consideran van en contra o a favor de nuestra comunidad. La sesión del 2023 no fue la excepción y en el caso de NM Dream Team, ellos estuvieron abogando fuertemente por las siguientes  iniciativas:

SB172: También conocido como proyecto de ley “Dignidad No Detención”, se presentó en la Legislatura de Nuevo México bajo el patrocinio del los Senadores Gerald Ortiz y Pino y el Antonio “Moe” Maestas.De haberse promulgado, los gobiernos locales de Nuevo México ya no se les hubiera permitido contratar al Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE, por sus siglas en inglés) a los efectos de la detención de inmigrantes.

ICE opera un sistema de más de 200 centros de detención de inmigrantes en los EE. UU., despojando a miles de personas de su libertad y dignidad todos los días. El sistema de detención de ICE se ha expandido significativamente en las últimas tres décadas a través de la proliferación de prisiones privadas y el posterior cabildeo ante el Congreso por parte de empresas privadas para aumentar las operaciones de cumplimiento y detener a más personas con fines de lucro.

House Bill 15 Special Immigrant Juvenile Act: El Proyecto de Ley 15 de la Cámara de Representantes, es un Proyecto de Ley de Clasificación de Inmigrantes Juveniles Especiales (SIJ), apodado también el proyecto de ley de Inmigrantes Juveniles Especiales (SIJ), fue aprobado por el Comité Judicial de la Cámara de Representantes de Nuevo México con un voto unánime de 10-0, obteniendo un claro apoyo bipartidista. La propuesta legislativa ahora pasa al Pleno de la Cámara. Si se promulga, los jóvenes y niños indocumentados que viven en Nuevo México serían elegibles para solicitar el Estatus de Inmigrante Juvenil Especial (SIJS) hasta la edad de 21 años, lo cual se alinea con el estatuto federal. (Esta propuesta YA ESTA EN LA MESA DE LE GOBERNADORA ESPERANDO A SER FIRMADA:  Manda un mensaje a la Gobernadora para decirle que la firme  https://www.governor.state.nm.us/contact-the-governor/ ) 

En esta entrevista, Fernanda Banda, coordinadora de campaña del NM Dream Team platico con Tu voz digital sobre esas propuestas de ley mencionadas anteriormente y como el equipo de NMDT se organizó para ir a dar testimonio a la legislatura y presionar a los políticos responsables de aprobar dichas leyes. Además, Fernanda  nos dejó entrar en su mundo al contarnos cómo es que  la lucha de la organización para apoyar la SB172 está ligada con su lucha personal al tener un padre que fue deportado y víctima de  maltratados en un Centro de Detención de NM. The NM legislative session ended along with the decision on many proposals that affect our community in one way or another. During legislative sessions, members of the NM community have the opportunity to advocate for or oppose bills they believe are against or in favor of our community. The 2023 session was no exception and in the case of the NM Dream Team, they were strongly advocating for the following initiatives:

SB172: Also known as the “Dignity Not Detention” bill, it was introduced in the New Mexico Legislature under the auspices of Senators Gerald Ortiz y Pino and Antonio “Moe” Maestas. If enacted, New Mexico local governments would no longer be allowed to contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for the purposes of immigration detention.

ICE operates a system of over 200 immigration detention facilities across the US, stripping thousands of people of their freedom and dignity every single day. The ICE detention system has significantly expanded over the past three decades through the proliferation of private prisons and subsequent lobbying to Congress by private companies to increase enforcement operations and detain more people for profit. 

House Bill 15, A Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) Classification Bill, nicknamed the Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) bill, passed The New Mexico House Judiciary  Committee with a unanimous 10-0 vote, garnering clear bipartisan support. The legislative proposal now moves to the House Floor. If enacted, undocumented youth and children living in New Mexico would be eligible to apply for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) up until the age of 21, which aligns with the federal statute.  (This proposal IS ALREADY ON THE GOVERNOR’S DESK WAITING TO BE SIGNED: Text the Governor to tell her to sign it https://www.governor.state.nm.us/contact-the-governor/)  

In this interview, Fernanda Banda, campaign coordinator for the NM Dream Team, talked to us about those bills mentioned above and how the NMDT team organized to go testify to the legislature and put pressure on the politicians responsible for passing those laws. In addition, Fernanda let us into her world by telling us how the organization’s fight to support SB172 is linked to her personal fight to have a father who was deported and a victim of mistreatment in a Detention Center NM. In addition, she tells us about the event that iBecas and more will be holding soon! It seeks to support young people who are about to enter the university with scholarships and information.

Somos un Pueblo Unido, fundada en 1995, es una organización estatal dirigida por inmigrantes y basada en la comunidad que promueve la justicia racial. La comunidad de Somos cuenta con membresía activa de 2,500 personas en ocho condados alrededor del estado y ofrece, entre otras cosas, educación comunitaria sobre derechos, oportunidades de liderazgo,  servicios legales a víctimas de robo de salarios, involucra a los latinos en procesos politicos y electorales ademas de liderar y apoyar campañas de base para políticas locales y nacionales que fortalezcan nuestras comunidades.

Gracias al trabajo y a la lucha de Somos, Nuevo Mexico es uno de los Estados que otorga  la  licencia de conducir a miembros de la comunidad aunque no cuenten con seguro social,  ICE ya no esta presenta en las cárceles Estatales disminuyendo deportaciones y tenemos politicas de protección santuario en varias ciudades del Estado. Esto solo por mencionar algunas de los logros de Somos en el Estado.

When we talk about advocacy, building community and protecting human rights in NM, we have to talk about Somos Un Pueblo Unido.

Somos un Pueblo Unido, founded in 1995, is a statewide community-based and immigrant-led organization that promotes worker and racial justice. Somos has an active membership of 2,500 people in eight counties around the state, and offers community education about rights, leadership opportunities, and low-wage workers Provides legal services to wage theft victims and initiates impact litigation to defend worker’s rights, engages Latinos in the political and electoral process and leads and supports grassroots campaigns for local and national policies that strengthen our communities.

Thanks to the work  of Somos, New Mexico is one of the States that grants a driver’s license to members of the community even if they do not have social security, ICE is no longer present in State prisons, reducing deportations and we have protection policies sanctuary in several cities of the State. This just to mention some of the achievements of Somos in the State.

Octubre es el mes de concientización sobre el cáncer de mama. Según la Sociedad Americana del Cáncer, el cáncer de mama es la forma más común de cáncer en las mujeres  después de los cánceres de piel. De hecho, una mujer en los EE. UU. Tiene un riesgo del 12% (una probabilidad de 1 en 8) de desarrollar cáncer de mama durante su vida. Además, existe una probabilidad de 1 en 38 de que una muera de cáncer de mama. Las pruebas de detección periódicas ayudan a detectar tejido mamario canceroso que puede estar presente en personas por lo demás sanas. Con un diagnóstico y tratamiento adecuados en las etapas iniciales, el cáncer de mama puede ser una de las formas de cáncer más tratables.

Para las mujeres de nuestra comunidad, enfrentar esta condición es aún más difícil; No es solo el miedo a afrontar el diagnóstico sino también la preocupación de no poder costear un tratamiento por falta de seguro médico. En esta entrevista, la Dra. Saavedra, Directora de “De comadre a comadre”, comparte con nosotros los servicios que ofrece la organización y cómo se dedica a servir a las mujeres hispanas / latinas y sus seres queridos a través de la defensa, educación, información, recursos y apoyo sobre la salud de las mamas y el cáncer de mama. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in American women after skin cancers. In fact, a woman in the U.S. has a 12% risk (a 1-in-8 chance) of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. Furthermore, there is a 1-in-38 chance that one will die from breast cancer. Regular screenings help in the detection of cancerous breast tissue that may be present in otherwise healthy individuals. With proper diagnoses and treatment in the initial stages, breast cancer can be one of the most treatable forms of cancer.

For women of our community, facing this condition is even more difficult; It is not only the fear of facing the diagnosis but also, there is the concern of not being able to afford a treatment due to the lack of medical insurance. In this interview, Dr. Saavedra, Director or “De comadre a comadre”, share with us the services that the organization offers and how is devoted to serving Hispanic/Latina women and their loved ones through advocacy, education, information, resources, and support about breast health and breast cancer.

Cada año, alrededor de 860,000 residentes legales en EE. UU. solicitan la ciudadanía por naturalización. El proceso de naturalización confiere la ciudadanía estadounidense a los solicitantes que hayan cumplido con los requisitos establecidos en la Ley de Inmigración y Nacionalidad (INA) . Después de la naturalización, los ciudadanos nacidos en el extranjero disfrutan de  los mismos beneficios, derechos y responsabilidades que la Constitución otorga a los ciudadanos estadounidenses al nacer, incluido el derecho al voto. Para nuestra comunidad inmigrante, el solicitar la ciudadanía estadounidense es un hito muy importante en sus vidas: es una experiencia que realmente cambia la vida y tiene un significado mucho más profundo que va mas allá que el permiso legal para vivir en este país. Es el deseo de vivir con dignidad y sin miedo … la sed de visitar su país de origen y reencontrarse con sus familiares después de tantos años … la oportunidad de tener una carrera o un trabajo mejor remunerado … y lo más importante, la capacidad de contribuir a hacer de este país más inclusivo, justo y equitativo para nosotros y las generaciones futuras a través del voto.

Hay tres formas de convertirse en ciudadano. El más común es la ciudadanía por derecho de nacimiento, lo que significa que cualquier persona nacida en los Estados Unidos es automáticamente ciudadano. Otro se llama ciudadanía derivada, que permite a los hijos de ciudadanos estadounidenses adquirir la ciudadanía estadounidense de sus padres. Finalmente, los no ciudadanos pueden solicitar la “naturalización”, el proceso por el cual el titular de una tarjeta verde se convierte en ciudadano estadounidense después de vivir en los Estados Unidos por un período de tiempo, generalmente de 3 a 5 años.

Every year, about 860,000 U.S. green card holders apply for citizenship by naturalization. The naturalization process confers U.S. citizenship upon applicants who have fulfilled the requirements established in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) . After naturalization, foreign-born citizens enjoy almost all the same benefits, rights, and responsibilities that the Constitution gives to U.S. citizens at birth, including the right to vote. For our immigrant community, deciding to apply for U.S. citizenship is a very important milestone in their lives: it is a truly life changing experience that has a significance far deeper than legal permission to live in this country. It is the desire to live with dignity and without  fear… the thirst to visit their home country and reunite with their relatives after so many years… the chance to have a career or better paying job..and most importantly, the ability to  contribute to making this country more inclusive, fair and  equitable for ourselves and future generations through voting. 

There are three ways to become a citizen. The most common is birthright citizenship, which means anyone born in the United States is automatically a citizen. Another is called derivative citizenship, which allows children of U.S. citizens to acquire U.S. citizenship from their parents. Finally, non-citizens can apply for “naturalization,” the process by which a green card holder becomes a U.S. citizen after living in the U.S. for a period of time, usually 3-5 years.

Tu Voz Digital te acerca a El Censo 2020

El Censo 2020 se acerca y con él, la oportunidad para que nuestra comunidad sea contada y tomada en cuenta de manera justa. Sin embargo, entre nuestra comunidad aún existen dudas y preguntas en relación a este proceso: ¿Mi información es confidencial? ¿Puedo responder el cuestionario en español? ¿Quién cuenta en el Censo? Estas son solo algunas de las muchas preguntas que existen.

El 1ero de abril es el día del Censo 2020 y el equipo de periodistas comunitarios de Tu Voz Digital de Encuentro les presenta esta  cálida e informativa entrevista con Sergio Martínez, coordinador y representante de las Oficinas del Censo en el Estado de Nuevo México, quien respondió a estas y mas preguntas sobre el Censo y comenta por qué es tan  importante nuestra participación en este proceso cívico.

En la segunda parte de esta conversación, platicamos con la organizadora comunitaria Rosalinda Dorado de nuestra organización aliada, El Centro de Igualdad y Derechos, quien nos comparte estadísticas sobre el censo así como las estrategias que dicha organización está llevando a cabo para promover el censo dentro de nuestra comunidad.

Los resultados del censo también determinan el número de asientos que recibe cada estado en el Congreso y se usan para trazar los distritos legislativos y estatales.

The Census 2020 is coming! This is an important  opportunity for our community to be fairly counted.  However, there are still many questions that our community has regarding the Census:  “Are my answers confidential? Can I answer the questionnaire in my own language? Who counts in the census?” Those are only a few of those questions.

April 1st is the opening day of the 2020 Census and Encuentro’s Tu Voz Digital’s community journalist team brings you a warm and informative interview with Sergio Martínez, coordinator and representative of the Census Offices in the State of New Mexico. Sergio helps answer those and more questions and tell us about  the importance of our participation in this civic process.

In the second part of this conversation we talk to Rosalinda Dorado, community organizer from our partner organization El Centro de Igualdad y Derechos, who is promoting the Census within the immigrant community so we can be fairly counted and we can have the political representation our communities deserve.

The Census is mandated by the Constitution and conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau,(a nonpartisan government agency) every 10 years. The 2020 Census counts the population in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories. 

It is really important to participate in the Census. The census provides essential information for legislators, besides the results determines their representation in Congress, as well as the distribution of federal funds for states and communities. Every year, billions of dollars in federal funding go to hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources based on census data.

The results of the census also determine the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Each home will receive an invitation to respond to a short questionnaire—online, by phone, or by mail.

April 1: By this date, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. Once the invitation arrives, you should respond for your home in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail. When you respond to the census, you’ll tell the Census Bureau where you live as of April 1, 2020.

May – July: Census takers will begin visiting homes that haven’t responded to the 2020 Census to help make sure everyone is counted.

Encuentro Te Acerca al Consulado Mexicano

De los mexicanos que viven fuera de su país, del 90% al 95% residen en Estados Unidos. En un esfuerzo por mejorar la calidad de vida de nuestros paisanos, el gobierno de México cuenta con una red consular de más de cincuenta consulados alrededor de los Estados Unidos, siendo el de Albuquerque el encargado de atender las necesidades de los mexicanos en el norte y centro del Estado de Nuevo México. Esto, bajo el liderazgo de la Cónsul Titular Norma Ang.

En esta edición, el equipo de “Tu Voz Digital” de Encuentro, trae para ustedes una cálida e informativa entrevista de la mano de nuestro periodista comunitario, Mario Aguilar, quien tuvo la oportunidad de conversar con la actual Cónsul de México en Albuquerque, Norma Ang,.En esta entrevista, Ang no solo nos comparte la misión del consulado y su funcionamiento,  sino también la información sobre los requisitos para obtener identificaciones como el pasaporte mexicano, la matrícula consular, así como los beneficios de la doble nacionalidad, traslado de restos a México y los diferentes programas que el gobierno ofrece a nuestros paisanos.

Encuentro, Bringing You Closer to the Mexican Consulate

Ninety to ninety-five percent of Mexicans living outside of their country reside in the United States. In an effort to improve the quality of life of our Mexican nationals, the Mexican government has a consular network of more than 50 consulates around the United States.The  Albuquerque-based consulate is in charge of serving the needs of Mexicans in  northern and central parts of New Mexico. All of this, under the leadership of the Titular Consul, Norma Ang.

This blog brings you a warm conversation that Community Journalist Mario Aguilar held with Ms. Norma Ang, current Director of the Mexican Consulate in Albuquerque and the state of New Mexico.  Ms. Ang has held this position for two years, and through this interview, she shares a vision of her role and the services this consulate has the obligation to bring to Mexicans as a representative institution of the Mexican government within the United States.

Ms. Ang not only shares with us the mission of the consulate and its operation, but also informs us on the requirements to obtain identifications such as the Mexican Passport, the consular registration, as well as the benefits of dual citizenship, transfer of remains to Mexico and the different programs that the government offers to our countrymen.

At Encuentro we are dedicated to strengthening our immigrant community through Adult Education, and a part of our mission is to promote social justice in our state;therefore, taking into account that more than 90% of our students are of Mexican origin, our duty is to facilitate access to the information and resources available to them, such as the information on consular services mentioned above.
