El 1 de septiembre de 2025, miles de trabajadores, familias y miembros de la comunidad se reunieron en la Plaza Cívica, en el centro de Albuquerque, para la protesta del Día del Trabajo titulada “Trabajadores sobre multimillonarios”. Entre los participantes se encontraban maestros, sindicatos, trabajadores de posgrado y organizaciones progresistas, todos unidos con un mensaje claro: defender a la clase trabajadora y exigir un futuro más justo y equitativo.

Este evento formó parte de un movimiento nacional, con marchas que tuvieron lugar en todo el país. En Albuquerque, los sindicatos y organizaciones locales animaron a la multitud con consignas y discursos que resonaron por las calles de la ciudad. La manifestación destacó la importancia de los derechos laborales, la rendición de cuentas corporativa y la lucha por la democracia. Los manifestantes expresaron su fuerte oposición a las políticas promulgadas durante la administración Trump, enfatizando los efectos negativos sobre las protecciones laborales, la educación y las familias trabajadoras. Los carteles y cánticos transmitieron un mensaje contundente: los trabajadores —no los multimillonarios— son la columna vertebral de esta nación.

Encuentro se une a los trabajadores

Encuentro se unió con orgullo a la marcha de este año, caminando junto a sindicatos, educadores, defensores de los inmigrantes y aliados. Nuestra presencia refleja nuestra misión: apoyar a las familias trabajadoras, promover la educación de adultos y fortalecer las trayectorias profesionales que hacen crecer a nuestra comunidad. Para nosotros, el Día del Trabajo no solo se trata de honrar las luchas pasadas de los trabajadores, sino también de avanzar en la lucha actual por salarios justos, condiciones laborales seguras y oportunidades para todos, especialmente para las familias inmigrantes y latinas que con frecuencia están en la primera línea del trabajo esencial.

 Un movimiento en crecimiento

Según los organizadores, más de 6.000 personas asistieron a la manifestación en Albuquerque, lo que la convierte en una de las celebraciones del Día del Trabajo más grandes de los últimos años. La diversidad de organizaciones participantes —desde los Teamsters y los Trabajadores de las Comunicaciones hasta el Partido por el Socialismo y la Liberación y la Coalición del Suroeste por Palestina— demostró el poder de la solidaridad en torno a diferentes causas.

Encuentro se enorgullece de ser parte de este movimiento. Juntos, estamos forjando una visión de Nuevo México donde los trabajadores, no los multimillonarios, marcan el camino hacia la justicia y la equidad.

On September 1, 2025, thousands of workers, families, and community members gathered at Civic Plaza in downtown Albuquerque for the “Workers Over Billionaires” Labor Day protest. Participants included teachers, trade unions, graduate workers, and progressive organizations, all united in a clear message: stand up for working people and demand a fairer, more just future. This event was part of a national movement, with marches taking place across the country. In Albuquerque, local unions and organizations rallied the crowd with chants and speeches that resonated throughout the city streets. The rally highlighted workers’ rights, corporate accountability, and the fight for democracy. Protesters expressed strong opposition to policies enacted during the Trump administration, emphasizing the adverse effects on labor protections, education, and working families. Signs and chants conveyed the message that working people — not billionaires — are the backbone of this nation.  

Encuentro Stands with Workers

Encuentro proudly joined this year’s march, standing alongside unions, educators, immigrant advocates, and allies. Our presence reflects our mission: to support working families, promote adult education, and strengthen career pathways that uplift our community. For us, Labor Day is not only about honoring the past struggles of workers but also about advancing the current fight for fair wages, safe working conditions, and opportunities for all — especially for immigrant and Latino families who are often on the front lines of essential labor.

A Growing Movement

According to organizers, more than 6,000 people attended the Albuquerque demonstration, making it one of the largest Labor Day events in recent years. The diversity of participating organizations — from the Teamsters and Communications Workers to the Party for Socialism and Liberation and the Southwestern Coalition for Palestine — showcased the power of solidarity across various issues. In 2002, the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs launched a pioneering initiative known as Ventanillas de Salud. Initially established in the Consulates of San Diego and San Francisco, these windows have evolved into an essential resource for the Mexican migrant community in the United States. Their purpose is to facilitate access to primary and preventive health services, while promoting a culture of prevention among Mexicans and their families.

La Ventanilla de Salud have a profound impact on migrant communities. They not only provide access to critical health information but also offer education on prevention topics and connect migrants with local resources. The bilingual staff working at these windows helps overcome linguistic and cultural barriers, which is crucial for addressing often-overlooked mental health issues. Furthermore, these initiatives promote collaboration with local organizations, empowering communities to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. In this way, the health windows serve as an essential pillar for improving the quality of life for migrants in the country.

On Thursday, August 15th, 2024, Encuentro witnessed a moment of profound significance at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Albuquerque presenting the 2024 NMHA at Casino Sandia, where our very own board president, **Sandra Ortsman**, was honored for her exceptional contributions to social justice and the advancement of racial and gender equity. With immense joy and pride, we celebrate Sandra’s achievement, not just as a personal victory but as a testament to the values we hold dear as an organization.

### A Champion for Social Justice: About Ortsman

Sandra Ortsman is a seasoned community planner and passionate advocate for social justice. Sandra has dedicated herself to advancing racial and gender equity through strategic planning, organizational development, fundraising, and access to capital initiatives. Her work spans a broad spectrum including foundations, educational institutions, grassroots organizations, and state entities.
Sandra holds dual Master’s degrees in Community and Regional Planning and Latin American Studies from the University of New Mexico (UNM). Her academic achievements, coupled with her bilingual abilities in English and Spanish, have enabled her to connect deeply with diverse communities and foster collaborative relationships across cultural boundaries.

Sandra also serves as an adjunct instructor at the UNM School of Architecture and Planning, where she educates future leaders on community-based practice. Each fall, she shares her expertise and passion, teaching students skills to engage and uplift marginalized communities.
Since 2015 Sandra has been an instrumental member of Encuentro’s board and has led as its President since 2018. Encuentro is a nonprofit dedicated to social justice, immigrant rights education a

From 2006 to early 2015, Sandra was the Associate Director at Enlace Comunitario, an immigrant rights organization working to eliminate domestic violence. In that role, she served as a member of Albuquerque’s Violence Prevention Task Force. In 2015, she founded a consulting firm to build capacity and financial resources for social justice nonprofits and like-minded foundations. In that role, she supports vital organizations like Centro Savila, the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center and the Southwest Women’s Law Center. She also works with Nusenda Credit Union, Roanhorse Consulting and other CDFIs to develop loan programs that have provided millions in loan funding to Native American and immigrant entrepreneurs. Her influence extends through her roles on the New Mexico Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and as a fellow of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Community Leadership Class II Network, amongst other notable positions.

La sesión legislativa de NM terminó y con ella, la decisión sobre muchas propuestas que afectan de una manera u otra a nuestra comunidad. Durante las sesiones legislativas, miembros de la comunidad de NM tienen la oportunidad de abogar u oponerse  a los proyectos de ley que consideran van en contra o a favor de nuestra comunidad. La sesión del 2023 no fue la excepción y en el caso de NM Dream Team, ellos estuvieron abogando fuertemente por las siguientes  iniciativas:

SB172: También conocido como proyecto de ley “Dignidad No Detención”, se presentó en la Legislatura de Nuevo México bajo el patrocinio del los Senadores Gerald Ortiz y Pino y el Antonio “Moe” Maestas.De haberse promulgado, los gobiernos locales de Nuevo México ya no se les hubiera permitido contratar al Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE, por sus siglas en inglés) a los efectos de la detención de inmigrantes.

ICE opera un sistema de más de 200 centros de detención de inmigrantes en los EE. UU., despojando a miles de personas de su libertad y dignidad todos los días. El sistema de detención de ICE se ha expandido significativamente en las últimas tres décadas a través de la proliferación de prisiones privadas y el posterior cabildeo ante el Congreso por parte de empresas privadas para aumentar las operaciones de cumplimiento y detener a más personas con fines de lucro.

House Bill 15 Special Immigrant Juvenile Act: El Proyecto de Ley 15 de la Cámara de Representantes, es un Proyecto de Ley de Clasificación de Inmigrantes Juveniles Especiales (SIJ), apodado también el proyecto de ley de Inmigrantes Juveniles Especiales (SIJ), fue aprobado por el Comité Judicial de la Cámara de Representantes de Nuevo México con un voto unánime de 10-0, obteniendo un claro apoyo bipartidista. La propuesta legislativa ahora pasa al Pleno de la Cámara. Si se promulga, los jóvenes y niños indocumentados que viven en Nuevo México serían elegibles para solicitar el Estatus de Inmigrante Juvenil Especial (SIJS) hasta la edad de 21 años, lo cual se alinea con el estatuto federal. (Esta propuesta YA ESTA EN LA MESA DE LE GOBERNADORA ESPERANDO A SER FIRMADA:  Manda un mensaje a la Gobernadora para decirle que la firme  https://www.governor.state.nm.us/contact-the-governor/ ) 

En esta entrevista, Fernanda Banda, coordinadora de campaña del NM Dream Team platico con Tu voz digital sobre esas propuestas de ley mencionadas anteriormente y como el equipo de NMDT se organizó para ir a dar testimonio a la legislatura y presionar a los políticos responsables de aprobar dichas leyes. The NM legislative session ended along with the decision on many proposals that affect our community in one way or another. During legislative sessions, members of the NM community have the opportunity to advocate for or oppose bills they believe are against or in favor of our community. The 2023 session was no exception and in the case of the NM Dream Team, they were strongly advocating for the following initiatives:

SB172: Also known as the “Dignity Not Detention” bill, it was introduced in the New Mexico Legislature under the auspices of Senators Gerald Ortiz y Pino and Antonio “Moe” Maestas. If enacted, New Mexico local governments would no longer be allowed to contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for the purposes of immigration detention.

ICE operates a system of over 200 immigration detention facilities across the US, stripping thousands of people of their freedom and dignity every single day. The ICE detention system has significantly expanded over the past three decades through the proliferation of private prisons and subsequent lobbying to Congress by private companies to increase enforcement operations and detain more people for profit. 

House Bill 15, A Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) Classification Bill, nicknamed the Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) bill, passed The New Mexico House Judiciary  Committee with a unanimous 10-0 vote, garnering clear bipartisan support. The legislative proposal now moves to the House Floor. If enacted, undocumented youth and children living in New Mexico would be eligible to apply for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) up until the age of 21, which aligns with the federal statute.  (This proposal IS ALREADY ON THE GOVERNOR’S DESK WAITING TO BE SIGNED: Text the Governor to tell her to sign it https://www.governor.state.nm.us/contact-the-governor/)  

In this interview, Fernanda Banda, campaign coordinator for the NM Dream Team, talked to us about those bills mentioned above and how the NMDT team organized to go testify to the legislature and put pressure on the politicians responsible for passing those laws. In addition, Fernanda let us into her world by telling us how the organization’s fight to support SB172 is linked to her personal fight to have a father who was deported and a victim of mistreatment in a Detention Center NM. In addition, she tells us about the event that iBecas and more will be holding soon! It seeks to support young people who are about to enter the university with scholarships and information.

Nadie debería tener que elegir entre su trabajo y el cuidado de un nuevo bebé, un familiar enfermo o su propia salud.  Sin embargo, esa es la situación en la que se encuentran muchos trabajadores estadounidenses. Estados Unidos es la única nación de la OCDE que no ofrece algún tipo de licencia familiar o médica remunerada.

Con el Departamento de Soluciones de la Fuerza Laboral administrando el Fondo Fiduciario de Licencia Familiar y Médica Pagada, la iniciativa garantiza que las familias tengan el tiempo que necesitan para vincularse después de dar la bienvenida a un nuevo hijo, tiempo para recuperarse de un problema de salud grave y tiempo para que los cuidadores familiares aborden las necesidades médicas de sus padres, hijos u otros miembros de la familia enfermos.

Los programas PFML también son efectivos para mejorar el desempeño y el compromiso de los empleados. Los estudios muestran que los empleados que toman una licencia paga tienen menos probabilidades de tomar una licencia por enfermedad cuando regresan, es más probable que sean empleados de la misma empresa dos años más tarde y es más probable que informen tener un alto nivel de moral y satisfacción en el lugar de trabajo.

¿En qué se diferencia esto de la licencia por enfermedad ya implementada en NM a mediados de este a-o? ¿Cómo beneficiaría PFML no solo a los empleados sino también a los empleadores? ¿Cuál es el estado actual de PFML? No one should have to choose between their job and caring for a new baby, a sick family member, or their own serious health condition. Yet, that is the situation many American workers find themselves in. The U.S. is the only OECD nation that does not offer some form of paid family or medical leave.

With the Department of Workforce Solutions administrating the Paid Family & Medical Leave Trust Fund, the initiative ensures that families have the time they need to bond after welcoming a new child, time to recover from a serious health problem, and time for family caregivers to address the medical needs of their sick parents, children, or other family members.

PFML programs are also effective in improving employee performance and engagement. Studies show that employees who take paid leave are less likely to take sick leave when they return, more likely to be employed by the same business two years later, and more likely to report high morale and workplace satisfaction.

How is this different from the sick leave already implemented in NM? How does PFML would benefit not only employees but also employers? What is the current status of PFML? Ademas, apoya la salud económica de nuestra comunidad, ya que es bien sabido que el costo de educación preescolar es más alto que incluso, colegiaturas del colegio haciendo que las familias paguen hasta 1,000 al mes por educación temprana. “…cuando llegan a edad escolar, las habilidades que llevan los niños (que tuvieron educación preescolar) tienen son grandisimas, los números lo dicen… por eso es nuestra lucha, para que los niños no tengan que decidir entre mandarlos a educación temprana o pagar algo mas”, comento Matilde MIranda, organizadora de educación temprana de Ole en entrevista.

OLÉ is a nonprofit community organization that  has been dedicated to working with New Mexico families to strengthen our communities through issue-based campaigning and electoral engagement to ensure a safe and equitable future for our community. Ole plays a fundamental role promoting campaigns and promoting services in different areas such as: Citizenship, labor rights, democracy reform and early childhood education.

Tu Voz Digital  interviewed Ole in order to learn about their work, the stories of their people and their advocacy in the community. Ole also shared with us details of the #VoteYesForKids campaign. This campaign seeks the approval of the first amendment to allocate funds to preschool education and to improve salaries for teachers who earn less than $15.00 dlls an hour. In addition, it supports the economic health of our community, as it is well known that the cost of preschool education is higher than even college tuition causing families to pay up to 1,000 a month for early education. “…when they reach school age, the skills that children (who had preschool education) have are great, the numbers say so… that is why it is our fight, so that children do not have to decide between sending them to early education or pay for something else,” said Matilde MIranda, Ole’s early education organizer.

Somos un Pueblo Unido, fundada en 1995, es una organización estatal dirigida por inmigrantes y basada en la comunidad que promueve la justicia racial. La comunidad de Somos cuenta con membresía activa de 2,500 personas en ocho condados alrededor del estado y ofrece, entre otras cosas, educación comunitaria sobre derechos, oportunidades de liderazgo,  servicios legales a víctimas de robo de salarios, involucra a los latinos en procesos politicos y electorales ademas de liderar y apoyar campañas de base para políticas locales y nacionales que fortalezcan nuestras comunidades.

Gracias al trabajo y a la lucha de Somos, Nuevo Mexico es uno de los Estados que otorga  la  licencia de conducir a miembros de la comunidad aunque no cuenten con seguro social,  ICE ya no esta presenta en las cárceles Estatales disminuyendo deportaciones y tenemos politicas de protección santuario en varias ciudades del Estado. Esto solo por mencionar algunas de los logros de Somos en el Estado.

When we talk about advocacy, building community and protecting human rights in NM, we have to talk about Somos Un Pueblo Unido.

Somos un Pueblo Unido, founded in 1995, is a statewide community-based and immigrant-led organization that promotes worker and racial justice. Somos has an active membership of 2,500 people in eight counties around the state, and offers community education about rights, leadership opportunities, and low-wage workers Provides legal services to wage theft victims and initiates impact litigation to defend worker’s rights, engages Latinos in the political and electoral process and leads and supports grassroots campaigns for local and national policies that strengthen our communities.

Thanks to the work  of Somos, New Mexico is one of the States that grants a driver’s license to members of the community even if they do not have social security, ICE is no longer present in State prisons, reducing deportations and we have protection policies sanctuary in several cities of the State. This just to mention some of the achievements of Somos in the State.

Two years have passed, and the Covid-19 pandemic continues to affect the health of millions of people worldwide. What is worse, society has to deal with covid 19 and its variants and the misinformation that circulates on social networks. Fortunately for us, science has done its part and we already have vaccines within reach, which have prevented people from severe symptoms and even from running to the hospital. What is worrying is to see the low numbers of people vaccinated in different parts of the state and that despite the State Department of Health efforts to inform people about the veracity of the vaccine, only 70% of the total population of NM has the three doses recommended by the CDC, making NM one of the states with the lowest population fully vaccinated.

Tu Voz Digital spoke with Glenda Canaca, General Practitioner specializing in Public Health and Director of the “Vacunate con confianza” campaign at the University of New Mexico, who gave us an update on the current situation with the pandemic, its variants, and access to vaccinations and home tests. El Proyecto de Bienestar de Refugiados e Inmigrantes (RIWP) es un programa anual de 9 meses que une a estudiantes de pregrado de la Universidad de Nuevo México (UNM) con familias de refugiados e inmigrantes en la movilización de recursos comunitarios y el aprendizaje mutuo. El programa reúne a refugiados recién llegados de Irak, Siria, Afganistán y la región de los Grandes Lagos de África (Burundi, República Democrática del Congo y Ruanda) e inmigrantes latinoamericanos y les ayuda a adaptarse al nuevo entorno.

RIWP apoya su proceso de llegada a un nuevo país proporcionándoles los recursos que necesitan para que puedan cumplir sus objetivos y apoyar su integración y estabilidad. Este programa también empodera a los recién llegados, ya que ellos mismos desempeñan un papel muy importante dentro del mismo; ademas de recibir recursos, comparten sus conocimientos y experiencias con los estudiantes y la comunidad a través de actividades como los círculos de intercambio.

RIWP trabaja en asociación con el Centro Transdisciplinario de Investigación, Equidad y Participación (TREE) para el avance de la salud conductual en la Universidad de Nuevo México (UNM), Encuentro, New Mexico Dream Team, New Mexico Immigrant Law Center y Centro Sávila. The Refugee and Immigrant Well-being Project (RIWP) is an annual, 9-month long program pairing undergraduate students from the University of New Mexico(UNM) with refugee and immigrant families in the mobilization of community resources and mutual learning.The programs brings together newly arrived refugees from Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and the Great Lakes Region of Africa (Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda) and Latin American immigrants and helps them adjust to the new environment.

RIWP supports their process of arriving to a new country by providing them resources they need so they can meet their goals and support their integration and stability.  This program also empower newcomers as they play an important role within it. They not only received de resources but they get to share their knowledge and experiences with the students and the community through activities such as the exchange circles.

RIWP works in partnership of the Transdisciplinary Research, Equity, and Engagement (TREE) Center for Advancing Behavioral Health at the University of New Mexico (UNM), Encuentro, New Mexico Dream Team, New Mexico Immigrant Law Center, and Centro Sávila.
