From PJ Day to Filter Day, our community showed and gathered together in fun and wacky ways to celebrate Spirit Week.

All week long, our virtual classrooms were filled with creativity, laughter, and Encuentro pride as community members showed up fully as themselves and deepened their sense of belonging.

April is a very special time at Encuentro! Students showcase their learning through presentations, games, storytelling, songs, and performances. This year, most classes met online and the Spanish for Solidarity class gathered in person. All students brought creativity, energy and fun as they engaged their audiences in all they learned this academic year.

I Scream . . . You Scream . . . We all Scream for Ice Cream! Our families really showed their Encuentro spirit by completing Spirit week at a local paletería. We gathered – young and old – to connect, build relationships, and share simple joys – through conversation, laughter and delicious treats.

Honrando a Larry Moore
July 22, 1948 – November 21, 2024

Celebrating the life of our beloved Larry Moore. On April 18, family and friends came together to honor the lasting memory of Larry Moore, a veteran ESL teacher who touched many lives, at Encuentro and beyond, through his unique approach to teaching – melding music and song.

Although he is missed, he is fondly remembered for his powerful legacy of joy and inspiration and the lasting impact he had on language learning in our community.

In this new episode of Tu Voz Digital, we invite you to learn more about AP-OD (Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors), a national, evidence-based organization founded in 2007 to support Latino and Spanish-speaking families with young children.

In our conversation with Delia Miramonte, a program facilitator, we explored how AP-OD centers parents’ voices—listening deeply to their concerns, hopes, and dreams—and builds initiatives that truly respond to their needs.

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the hiring of Andrea Plaza as the new Executive Director of Encuentro. As one of the founders of Encuentro, Andrea’s many years of experience with the organization, combined with a deep knowledge of community leadership, immigrant advocacy, nonprofit management, education, and workforce development topics, make Andrea a natural choice to lead the organization.

Andrea brings stability to the organization during these challenging times, and she shares a deep commitment to Encuentro’s mission to build a thriving New Mexico by engaging Latinx immigrant families through education and career development.

Andrea is excited to rejoin the organization in the leadership role. Upon being notified of her selection as Executive Director, she commented, “Life is full of unexpected twists, and the universe has guided me back to Encuentro! I feel grateful for the opportunity to work with our amazing immigrant community again, and ready to support the organization as we navigate these challenging times and move on to greater opportunities!”

As Encuentro continues to be a beacon of hope and opportunity for some of the most vulnerable in our community, the Board is confident that Andrea’s experience and vision will guide Encuentro through this next chapter of growth and impact.

Albuquerque, NM – 18 de junio de 2025 – Encuentro se enorgullece de haber estado en solidaridad con nuestra organización hermana, El CENTRO de Igualdad y Derechos, y con una amplia coalición de aliades durante una poderosa conferencia de prensa en la que se condenaron la retórica dañina y las políticas dirigidas a criminalizar a las comunidades inmigrantes.

El evento reunió a organizaciones dirigidas por inmigrantes y al servicio de inmigrantes, líderes comunitarios, funcionarios electos —incluyendo al alcalde Tim Keller y al presidente de la Cámara de Representantes de Nuevo México, Javier Martínez— líderes religiosos, educadores y defensores de la seguridad pública y las libertades civiles. Juntos, alzaron una voz unificada en contra del resurgimiento de amenazas de deportaciones masivas, el aumento de la actividad de ICE en Nuevo México y la erosión de las protecciones constitucionales para las familias inmigrantes.

En Encuentro, trabajamos todos los días con personas adultas inmigrantes que se esfuerzan por construir un mejor futuro para ellas y sus familias a través de la educación y el desarrollo profesional. Durante la conferencia de prensa, el presidente de la Cámara de Representantes de Nuevo México, Javier Martínez, enfatizó que “este no es el momento de darle la espalda a nuestras comunidades. Debemos alzar la voz por nuestras vecinas y vecinos, quienes rezan con nosotros, se sientan a nuestro lado en los juegos de la liga infantil y trabajan en todos los rincones de nuestro estado. Ningún empleado municipal, incluyendo la policía, tiene permitido preguntar por el estatus migratorio o registrarlo. Esa es nuestra política, y está basada en la creencia de que las personas inmigrantes fortalecen nuestra ciudad todos los días.”

Otras personas oradoras, incluyendo representantes de la ACLU de Nuevo México, el Centro de Leyes para Inmigrantes de Nuevo México (NMILC) y la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Nuevo México, condenaron la persecución de inmigrantes como una táctica política y llamaron a la unidad para defender los derechos humanos fundamentales. Albuquerque, NM – June 18, 2025 – Encuentro proudly stood in solidarity with our sister organization, El CENTRO de Igualdad y Derechos, and a broad coalition of allies during a powerful press conference condemning the harmful rhetoric and policies aimed at criminalizing immigrant communities.

The event brought together immigrant-led and immigrant-serving organizations, community leaders, elected officials—including Mayor Tim Keller and Speaker of the New Mexico House Javier Martinez—faith leaders, educators, and advocates for public safety and civil liberties. Together, they raised a unified voice against the resurgence of mass deportation threats, increased ICE activity in New Mexico, and the erosion of constitutional protections for immigrant families.

At Encuentro, we work every day with immigrant adults striving to build a better future for themselves and their families through education and career development. We see firsthand the strength, resilience, and contributions immigrants make to our communities and economy. The notion of mass deportation is not only a moral and humanitarian crisis—it is a direct attack on the very individuals who sustain vital sectors of New Mexico’s workforce.

Immigrants in New Mexico are vital to the health and prosperity of our state. They power key industries such as construction, hospitality, caregiving, agriculture, and energy. They are small business owners, parents, and taxpayers—integral members of our communities. According to the ACLU of New Mexico, immigrant contributions amount to over $1.4 billion in federal, state, and local taxes, funding our public schools, hospitals, roads, and other essential services.

Encuentro echoes the call to uphold local policies that protect immigrant communities by ensuring that local law enforcement is not used as an extension of federal immigration enforcement. These policies reflect our shared values of dignity, fairness, and inclusion—and they must be safeguarded.

During the press conference, Speaker of the New Mexico House of Representatives Javier Martinez emphasized that “Now is not the time to turn our back on our communities. We must stand up for our neighbors, who pray with us, sit next to us at Little League games, and work in every corner of our state. What Trump is doing is not reforming our immigration system, it’s violating due process and vilifying our people because of the color of their skin and the language they speak. We will do everything in our power to continue to protect our communities and speak out against this injustice.” He affirmed the state’s long-standing commitment to policies that protect the rights and dignity of immigrant families and underscored the vital role immigrants play in shaping the cultural and economic fabric of our state.

Mayor Tim Keller echoed this sentiment, reaffirming Albuquerque’s stance as a welcoming city: “Our communities are safer when everyone feels safe reporting crime, asking for help, and seeking services; no city staff, including police, are allowed to ask about immigration status or document it. That’s our policy, and it’s rooted in the belief that immigrants make our city stronger every day.”

Other speakers, including representatives from the ACLU of New Mexico, the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center, and the New Mexico Conference of Catholic Bishops, denounced the targeting of immigrants as a political tactic and called for unity in defending fundamental human rights. They reminded the public that due process, equal protection, and human dignity are not optional—they are constitutional guarantees. “if they don’t want undocumented people in the country, documented!”- added Allen Sanchez, Executive Director of New Mexico Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Encuentro was proud to be present in this collective show of strength and solidarity. As the threat of increased ICE activity looms, we remain vigilant and committed to protecting the families we serve, many of whom are the very backbone of New Mexico’s economy and community life. We call on all our partners, supporters, and neighbors to join us in this fight for justice, and to continue building a future where every person—regardless of immigration status—can live with safety, opportunity, and dignity.

Held at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, the event was a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience, and unity that drive Encuentro’s mission forward.

In a world that often seems divided and polarized, the importance of community activism and civic participation cannot be underestimated. Recently, Tu Voz Digital had the fortune of conversing with Berta, a citizenship organizer for OLÉ Nuevo México—an essential community organization dedicated to empowering working families and amplifying the voices of those who are often overlooked in discussions about policies and governance.

Our conversation focused on the crucial role of Latinx participation in the upcoming elections and how OLÉ supports immigrant communities on their path to civic engagement. Since its founding in 2009, OLÉ has worked tirelessly to unite working families, particularly those from communities of color, around the urgent issues affecting their lives. Over 300 Latinx immigrant working parents and adults are currently enrolled in Encuentro’s Adult Basic Education to Career Pathways program. The programs focus on developing essential language, adult literacy, entrepreneurship, and job skills to succeed in the USA.

To ensure that students, teachers, and support staff are well-prepared to use technology as a learning tool, Encuentro’s Digital Equity Team, led by Veronica Salazar, has developed a comprehensive on-boarding process.

Antes del primer día de clase, los profesores, facilitadores y estudiantes participan en una sesión de introducción a la tecnología de dos horas en la que se les enseña a navegar en las herramientas del Google Drive, incluyendo Google Classroom y Google Meets, así como herramientas de software, y comunicación como WhatsApp. Este enfoque integral de alfabetización digital crea un entorno de apoyo que permite a todos navegar y utilizar la tecnología de manera eficaz para mejorar sus experiencias de aprendizaje y enseñanza.

Prior to their first day of class, teachers, facilitators, and students engage in a two-hour Tech On-boarding session that introduces Google Drive navigation, including Google classroom and Google Meets, as well as software tools, including communication platforms such as Whatsapp. This comprehensive digital literacy approach creates a supportive environment, enabling everyone to effectively navigate and utilize technology to enhance their learning and teaching experiences.

No solo ofrecen acceso a información crucial sobre salud, sino que también brindan educación sobre temas de prevención y conectan a los migrantes con recursos locales. El personal bilingüe que labora en estas ventanillas supera las barreras lingüísticas y culturales, lo que es fundamental para abordar asuntos de salud mental, que a menudo son desatendidos. Además, estas iniciativas promueven la colaboración con organizaciones locales, empoderando a las comunidades para que tomen decisiones informadas sobre su salud y bienestar. In 2002, the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs launched a pioneering initiative known as Ventanillas de Salud. Initially established in the Consulates of San Diego and San Francisco, these windows have evolved into an essential resource for the Mexican migrant community in the United States. Their purpose is to facilitate access to primary and preventive health services, while promoting a culture of prevention among Mexicans and their families.

La Ventanilla de Salud have a profound impact on migrant communities. They not only provide access to critical health information but also offer education on prevention topics and connect migrants with local resources. The bilingual staff working at these windows helps overcome linguistic and cultural barriers, which is crucial for addressing often-overlooked mental health issues. Furthermore, these initiatives promote collaboration with local organizations, empowering communities to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. In this way, the health windows serve as an essential pillar for improving the quality of life for migrants in the country.

El pasado 13 de abril del año actual, los periodistas de TVD tuvieron el honor de conversar con la reconocida activista sindical Dolores Huerta durante la celebración anual en honor a Cesar Chavez y Dolores Huerta celebrada en el Centro Cultural Hispano al sur de la ciudad. Este evento anual, tiene como propósito rendir homenaje al legado de Chavez y a la vida de Huerta, ambos líderes sindicales de los trabajadores del campo. Recordemos César Chávez y Dolores Huerta fueron destacados activistas de derechos civiles que dedicaron sus vidas a luchar por los derechos laborales de los trabajadores agrícolas. En 1962, cofundaron el Sindicato de Trabajadores Agrícolas Unidos, el cual se convirtió en el primer sindicato duradero de su tipo en los Estados Unidos. Gracias a su incansable lucha, se lograron mejoras significativas en las condiciones de trabajo y salarios de los trabajadores del campo.

Además de su labor sindical, ambos activistas abogaron por la unidad familiar al promover la aprobación de la Ley de Inmigración de 1986, la cual benefició a más de un millón de inmigrantes al otorgarles la posibilidad de convertirse en ciudadanos estadounidenses. Through this collaboration, we aim to amplify the voices of the migrant community, sharing their stories of struggle and resistance while shedding light on the immigrant experience in the enchanting land of New Mexico.

On April 13, the TVD journalists were privileged to engage in a conversation with the esteemed union activist Dolores Huerta during the annual celebration honoring Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta at the Hispanic Cultural Center in the southern part of the city. This annual event serves as a tribute to the enduring legacy of Chavez and the remarkable life of Huerta, both pivotal leaders in the fight for the rights of farm workers. It is important to remember that César Chávez and Dolores Huerta were influential civil rights activists who dedicated their lives to advocating for the labor rights of agricultural workers. In 1962, they co-founded the United Farm Workers Union, making it the first enduring union of its kind in the United States. Their relentless efforts led to significant improvements in working conditions and wages for farm workers.

Furthermore, beyond their union activism, both Huerta and Chavez championed family unity and were instrumental in advocating for the passage of the Immigration Act of 1986. This pivotal legislation benefitted over one million immigrants by providing them with the opportunity to pursue American citizenship.
