Citizenship Day: A Celebration We Shared as a Community

On September 17, El CENTRO de Igualdad y Derechos, the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center (NMILC), and Encuentro chose to celebrate Citizenship Day together as a community, honoring neighbors who recently became U.S. citizens. The gathering recognized a milestone years in the making, shaped by hard work, preparation, and perseverance.

Together, our three organizations created a space to recognize new citizens and the people who walked alongside them. The ceremony brought together personal stories, special recognitions, and the pride of families, educators, volunteers, and community partners. Vanessa Arballo, representing the City of Albuquerque, presented a proclamation recognizing Citizenship Day. Representative Cristina Parajón also joined the celebration.

For many people, citizenship represents both a personal achievement and a chance to help shape the future of their communities. It brings the right to vote in federal elections and can offer greater protection from deportation and opportunities to petition for eligible family members. It also creates more ways to participate in decisions affecting our families and neighbors.

That journey is strengthened by collaboration. Encuentro’s Citizenship Program provides education and support as students prepare for naturalization and build confidence in their knowledge and their voices. NMILC helps eligible community members pursue citizenship through free services, making support available over the phone or in person by appointment. El CENTRO de Igualdad y Derechos joined us in honoring this milestone and celebrating the civic participation of immigrant communities. Each organization brought its commitment to the same shared moment: recognizing the people whose perseverance made this day possible.

At a time when immigrant communities face many challenges, coming together to celebrate matters. Each new citizen brings experiences, hopes, and a voice that strengthens New Mexico. The joy in the room was a reminder that this achievement belongs to the individuals who earned it and to the community that supports them.

Congratulations to our new citizens! Your achievement reminds us of the power of education, participation, and community.
