From the heart of art and education, our community journalism group had the opportunity to interview the organizers of a deeply moving exhibition currently on view at the Albuquerque Museum: Puertas fronterizas / Border Doors.

This bilingual exhibition, open through May 4, 2025, features artwork by students from Sandia Preparatory School who, guided by teacher Claudio Pérez, have transformed doors into powerful visual pieces that tell real stories of immigration, resilience, and hope.

In this video, you’ll hear directly from the people who made this exhibition possible—their vision, their motivation, and how art can serve as a powerful tool to break down prejudice, spark conversation, and build empathy.

Border Doors invites us to look beyond walls and listen to the stories that cross borders.

El pasado 13 de abril del año actual, los periodistas de TVD tuvieron el honor de conversar con la reconocida activista sindical Dolores Huerta durante la celebración anual en honor a Cesar Chavez y Dolores Huerta celebrada en el Centro Cultural Hispano al sur de la ciudad. Este evento anual, tiene como propósito rendir homenaje al legado de Chavez y a la vida de Huerta, ambos líderes sindicales de los trabajadores del campo. Recordemos César Chávez y Dolores Huerta fueron destacados activistas de derechos civiles que dedicaron sus vidas a luchar por los derechos laborales de los trabajadores agrícolas. En 1962, cofundaron el Sindicato de Trabajadores Agrícolas Unidos, el cual se convirtió en el primer sindicato duradero de su tipo en los Estados Unidos. Gracias a su incansable lucha, se lograron mejoras significativas en las condiciones de trabajo y salarios de los trabajadores del campo.

Además de su labor sindical, ambos activistas abogaron por la unidad familiar al promover la aprobación de la Ley de Inmigración de 1986, la cual benefició a más de un millón de inmigrantes al otorgarles la posibilidad de convertirse en ciudadanos estadounidenses. Welcome to another segment of “Nuestra Voz” a production by the community journalism group of Tu Voz Digital in collaboration with the Raíces collective of KUNM 89.9FM. Through this collaboration, we aim to amplify the voices of the migrant community, sharing their stories of struggle and resistance while shedding light on the immigrant experience in the enchanting land of New Mexico.

On April 13, the TVD journalists were privileged to engage in a conversation with the esteemed union activist Dolores Huerta during the annual celebration honoring Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta at the Hispanic Cultural Center in the southern part of the city. This annual event serves as a tribute to the enduring legacy of Chavez and the remarkable life of Huerta, both pivotal leaders in the fight for the rights of farm workers. It is important to remember that César Chávez and Dolores Huerta were influential civil rights activists who dedicated their lives to advocating for the labor rights of agricultural workers. In 1962, they co-founded the United Farm Workers Union, making it the first enduring union of its kind in the United States. Their relentless efforts led to significant improvements in working conditions and wages for farm workers.

Furthermore, beyond their union activism, both Huerta and Chavez championed family unity and were instrumental in advocating for the passage of the Immigration Act of 1986. This pivotal legislation benefitted over one million immigrants by providing them with the opportunity to pursue American citizenship. La sesión legislativa de NM terminó y con ella, la decisión sobre muchas propuestas que afectan de una manera u otra a nuestra comunidad. Durante las sesiones legislativas, miembros de la comunidad de NM tienen la oportunidad de abogar u oponerse  a los proyectos de ley que consideran van en contra o a favor de nuestra comunidad. La sesión del 2023 no fue la excepción y en el caso de NM Dream Team, ellos estuvieron abogando fuertemente por las siguientes  iniciativas:

SB172: También conocido como proyecto de ley “Dignidad No Detención”, se presentó en la Legislatura de Nuevo México bajo el patrocinio del los Senadores Gerald Ortiz y Pino y el Antonio “Moe” Maestas.De haberse promulgado, los gobiernos locales de Nuevo México ya no se les hubiera permitido contratar al Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE, por sus siglas en inglés) a los efectos de la detención de inmigrantes.

ICE opera un sistema de más de 200 centros de detención de inmigrantes en los EE. UU., despojando a miles de personas de su libertad y dignidad todos los días. El sistema de detención de ICE se ha expandido significativamente en las últimas tres décadas a través de la proliferación de prisiones privadas y el posterior cabildeo ante el Congreso por parte de empresas privadas para aumentar las operaciones de cumplimiento y detener a más personas con fines de lucro.

House Bill 15 Special Immigrant Juvenile Act: El Proyecto de Ley 15 de la Cámara de Representantes, es un Proyecto de Ley de Clasificación de Inmigrantes Juveniles Especiales (SIJ), apodado también el proyecto de ley de Inmigrantes Juveniles Especiales (SIJ), fue aprobado por el Comité Judicial de la Cámara de Representantes de Nuevo México con un voto unánime de 10-0, obteniendo un claro apoyo bipartidista. La propuesta legislativa ahora pasa al Pleno de la Cámara. Si se promulga, los jóvenes y niños indocumentados que viven en Nuevo México serían elegibles para solicitar el Estatus de Inmigrante Juvenil Especial (SIJS) hasta la edad de 21 años, lo cual se alinea con el estatuto federal. (Esta propuesta YA ESTA EN LA MESA DE LE GOBERNADORA ESPERANDO A SER FIRMADA:  Manda un mensaje a la Gobernadora para decirle que la firme  https://www.governor.state.nm.us/contact-the-governor/ ) 

En esta entrevista, Fernanda Banda, coordinadora de campaña del NM Dream Team platico con Tu voz digital sobre esas propuestas de ley mencionadas anteriormente y como el equipo de NMDT se organizó para ir a dar testimonio a la legislatura y presionar a los políticos responsables de aprobar dichas leyes. Además, Fernanda  nos dejó entrar en su mundo al contarnos cómo es que  la lucha de la organización para apoyar la SB172 está ligada con su lucha personal al tener un padre que fue deportado y víctima de  maltratados en un Centro de Detención de NM. Además, nos cuenta como el evento que estarán llevando a cabo próximamente iBecas y más! Busca apoyar a jóvenes que están por entrar a la universidad con becas e información.

The NM legislative session ended along with the decision on many proposals that affect our community in one way or another. During legislative sessions, members of the NM community have the opportunity to advocate for or oppose bills they believe are against or in favor of our community. The 2023 session was no exception and in the case of the NM Dream Team, they were strongly advocating for the following initiatives:

SB172: Also known as the “Dignity Not Detention” bill, it was introduced in the New Mexico Legislature under the auspices of Senators Gerald Ortiz y Pino and Antonio “Moe” Maestas. If enacted, New Mexico local governments would no longer be allowed to contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for the purposes of immigration detention.

ICE operates a system of over 200 immigration detention facilities across the US, stripping thousands of people of their freedom and dignity every single day. The ICE detention system has significantly expanded over the past three decades through the proliferation of private prisons and subsequent lobbying to Congress by private companies to increase enforcement operations and detain more people for profit. 

House Bill 15, A Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) Classification Bill, nicknamed the Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) bill, passed The New Mexico House Judiciary  Committee with a unanimous 10-0 vote, garnering clear bipartisan support. The legislative proposal now moves to the House Floor. If enacted, undocumented youth and children living in New Mexico would be eligible to apply for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) up until the age of 21, which aligns with the federal statute.  (This proposal IS ALREADY ON THE GOVERNOR’S DESK WAITING TO BE SIGNED: Text the Governor to tell her to sign it https://www.governor.state.nm.us/contact-the-governor/)  

In this interview, Fernanda Banda, campaign coordinator for the NM Dream Team, talked to us about those bills mentioned above and how the NMDT team organized to go testify to the legislature and put pressure on the politicians responsible for passing those laws. In addition, Fernanda let us into her world by telling us how the organization’s fight to support SB172 is linked to her personal fight to have a father who was deported and a victim of mistreatment in a Detention Center NM. In addition, she tells us about the event that iBecas and more will be holding soon! It seeks to support young people who are about to enter the university with scholarships and information.

Ademas, compartieron con nosotros detalles de la campaña #VoteYesForKids. Esta campaña busca la aprobación de la primera enmienda para destinar fondos a la educación preescolar y a la mejora de sueldos para maestros quienes llegan a ganar menos de $15.00 dlls la hora. Ademas, apoya la salud económica de nuestra comunidad, ya que es bien sabido que el costo de educación preescolar es más alto que incluso, colegiaturas del colegio haciendo que las familias paguen hasta 1,000 al mes por educación temprana. “…cuando llegan a edad escolar, las habilidades que llevan los niños (que tuvieron educación preescolar) tienen son grandisimas, los números lo dicen… por eso es nuestra lucha, para que los niños no tengan que decidir entre mandarlos a educación temprana o pagar algo mas”, comento Matilde MIranda, organizadora de educación temprana de Ole en entrevista.

OLÉ is a nonprofit community organization that  has been dedicated to working with New Mexico families to strengthen our communities through issue-based campaigning and electoral engagement to ensure a safe and equitable future for our community. Ole plays a fundamental role promoting campaigns and promoting services in different areas such as: Citizenship, labor rights, democracy reform and early childhood education.

Tu Voz Digital  interviewed Ole in order to learn about their work, the stories of their people and their advocacy in the community. Ole also shared with us details of the #VoteYesForKids campaign. This campaign seeks the approval of the first amendment to allocate funds to preschool education and to improve salaries for teachers who earn less than $15.00 dlls an hour. In addition, it supports the economic health of our community, as it is well known that the cost of preschool education is higher than even college tuition causing families to pay up to 1,000 a month for early education. “…when they reach school age, the skills that children (who had preschool education) have are great, the numbers say so… that is why it is our fight, so that children do not have to decide between sending them to early education or pay for something else,” said Matilde MIranda, Ole’s early education organizer.

Encuentro is proud to announce that the dream of purchasing our first building has become a reality!/ iEncuentro se enorgullece en anunciar que el sueño de comprar un nuevo edificio se convirtió en una realidad!

El nuevo edificio, ubicado en 907 4th Street SW, está en el corazón del barrio Barelas en  Albuquerque, tiene una dimensión de 7200 pies cuadrados y ampliará el número de aulas a cinco, lo cual no solo nos permitirá albergar todos programas de Encuentro en un solo lugar,  pero también proveer cuidado de niños en sitio, oficinas para nuestro personal el cual va en crecimiento  y nos permitirá  proporcionar oficinas para organizaciones aliadas que ofrecen recursos esenciales para nuestras familias inmigrantes.. Los planos arquitectónicos están completos, la  renovación ya está en camino y hemos asegurado al contratista quién guiará el proceso de remodelación,el cual esperamos que dure hasta fin de año. En los próximos meses, compartiremos más detalles acerca de las renovaciones así como información acerca de cómo colaborar, futuros planes y eventos.   

The new building, located at 907 4th Street SW, is in the heart of Albuquerque’s Barelas neighborhood. It is 7200 square feet and will expand the number of classrooms to five, accommodate all of Encuentro’s programs, on-site childcare, offices for our growing staff, and provide satellite offices to partner organizations offering essential resources to our immigrant families for years to come. The architectural drawings are complete, renovation plans are ready to go, and we have secured the contractor who will guide the remodel process, which we expect to take us through the end of the year. In the months to come, we will share updates on renovation as well as future plans and events and how you can contribute!

La renovación de nuestro edificio comenzó el pasado mes de Julio iAqui algunas fotos!

The renovation of our building began last July. Here are some photos!

En este nuevo edificio Encuentro albergara TODOS sus programa bajo un mismo techo: se tendrá un salon de computadoras, mas cuatro salones donde se concentraran las clases de Ingles, ciudadania, Finanzas etc. Dichos salones estarán en el centro del edificio y contaran con paredes movedizas las cuales podrán ser removidas a conveniencia. Esto significa que al poderse mover, permitirá tener un espacio abierto que se usara como sala de usos múltiples para capacitaciones de grupos grandes y eventos comunitarios. Con esto, Encuentro busca seguir con su esencia de unidad y colectividad

Before our new building, many of Encuentro’s classes were hosted off site. With this new building, Encuentro will be able to house ALL of its programs in one location. There will be a permanent computer classroom, along with 4 other rooms that will host our English, Citizenship and other classes. These 4 classrooms will have moving walls that allow us to create an open space for a multi-purpose room for large group trainings and community-wide events. This feature is important for Encuentro to continue with its essence of unity and collectivity.

Cada oficina contara con una ventana que permitirá recibir luz natural, iTendremos mucha luz! (¿De quién crees que será está oficina? Pista: Muchas entrevistas se llevarán a cabo ahí)

Each office will have a window that will allow it to receive natural light. It will be a house full of light!  (Whose office do you think this will be? Hint: many interviews will take place there!)

El Proyecto de Bienestar de Refugiados e Inmigrantes (RIWP) es un programa anual de 9 meses que une a estudiantes de pregrado de la Universidad de Nuevo México (UNM) con familias de refugiados e inmigrantes en la movilización de recursos comunitarios y el aprendizaje mutuo. El programa reúne a refugiados recién llegados de Irak, Siria, Afganistán y la región de los Grandes Lagos de África (Burundi, República Democrática del Congo y Ruanda) e inmigrantes latinoamericanos y les ayuda a adaptarse al nuevo entorno.

RIWP apoya su proceso de llegada a un nuevo país proporcionándoles los recursos que necesitan para que puedan cumplir sus objetivos y apoyar su integración y estabilidad. Este programa también empodera a los recién llegados, ya que ellos mismos desempeñan un papel muy importante dentro del mismo; ademas de recibir recursos, comparten sus conocimientos y experiencias con los estudiantes y la comunidad a través de actividades como los círculos de intercambio.

RIWP trabaja en asociación con el Centro Transdisciplinario de Investigación, Equidad y Participación (TREE) para el avance de la salud conductual en la Universidad de Nuevo México (UNM), Encuentro, New Mexico Dream Team, New Mexico Immigrant Law Center y Centro Sávila. The Refugee and Immigrant Well-being Project (RIWP) is an annual, 9-month long program pairing undergraduate students from the University of New Mexico(UNM) with refugee and immigrant families in the mobilization of community resources and mutual learning.The programs brings together newly arrived refugees from Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and the Great Lakes Region of Africa (Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda) and Latin American immigrants and helps them adjust to the new environment.

RIWP supports their process of arriving to a new country by providing them resources they need so they can meet their goals and support their integration and stability.  This program also empower newcomers as they play an important role within it. They not only received de resources but they get to share their knowledge and experiences with the students and the community through activities such as the exchange circles.

RIWP works in partnership of the Transdisciplinary Research, Equity, and Engagement (TREE) Center for Advancing Behavioral Health at the University of New Mexico (UNM), Encuentro, New Mexico Dream Team, New Mexico Immigrant Law Center, and Centro Sávila.

Pathways es un programa diseñado para reducir las necesidades insatisfechas, abordar las inequidades en la salud y mejorar la salud general de los residentes del condado de Bernalillo. Se enfoca en resultados de salud positivos al utilizar navegadores de salud comunitarios como coordinadores de atención que conectan a los residentes en riesgo con los recursos y siguen su progreso hacia mejores resultados de salud. Se alcanzan resultados significativos para los clientes siguiendo un enfoque paso a paso (Pathways). Si bien los clientes individuales logran una mejor salud, los problemas comunes de los sistemas también salen a la luz y dan como resultado una coordinación de servicios más sólida.

Pathways is a program designed to reduce unmet needs, address health inequities, and improve the overall health of the residents of Bernalillo County. It focuses on positive health outcomes by utilizing community health navigators as care coordinators who connect at-risk residents to resources and follow their progress toward improved health outcomes. Meaningful outcomes for the clients are reached by following a step-by-step approach (Pathways). While individual clients attain improved health, common systems issues are also brought to light and result in stronger service coordination.

Cada año, alrededor de 860,000 residentes legales en EE. UU. solicitan la ciudadanía por naturalización. El proceso de naturalización confiere la ciudadanía estadounidense a los solicitantes que hayan cumplido con los requisitos establecidos en la Ley de Inmigración y Nacionalidad (INA) . Después de la naturalización, los ciudadanos nacidos en el extranjero disfrutan de  los mismos beneficios, derechos y responsabilidades que la Constitución otorga a los ciudadanos estadounidenses al nacer, incluido el derecho al voto. Para nuestra comunidad inmigrante, el solicitar la ciudadanía estadounidense es un hito muy importante en sus vidas: es una experiencia que realmente cambia la vida y tiene un significado mucho más profundo que va mas allá que el permiso legal para vivir en este país. Es el deseo de vivir con dignidad y sin miedo … la sed de visitar su país de origen y reencontrarse con sus familiares después de tantos años … la oportunidad de tener una carrera o un trabajo mejor remunerado … y lo más importante, la capacidad de contribuir a hacer de este país más inclusivo, justo y equitativo para nosotros y las generaciones futuras a través del voto.

Hay tres formas de convertirse en ciudadano. El más común es la ciudadanía por derecho de nacimiento, lo que significa que cualquier persona nacida en los Estados Unidos es automáticamente ciudadano. Otro se llama ciudadanía derivada, que permite a los hijos de ciudadanos estadounidenses adquirir la ciudadanía estadounidense de sus padres. Finalmente, los no ciudadanos pueden solicitar la “naturalización”, el proceso por el cual el titular de una tarjeta verde se convierte en ciudadano estadounidense después de vivir en los Estados Unidos por un período de tiempo, generalmente de 3 a 5 años.

Every year, about 860,000 U.S. green card holders apply for citizenship by naturalization. The naturalization process confers U.S. citizenship upon applicants who have fulfilled the requirements established in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) . After naturalization, foreign-born citizens enjoy almost all the same benefits, rights, and responsibilities that the Constitution gives to U.S. citizens at birth, including the right to vote. For our immigrant community, deciding to apply for U.S. citizenship is a very important milestone in their lives: it is a truly life changing experience that has a significance far deeper than legal permission to live in this country. It is the desire to live with dignity and without  fear… the thirst to visit their home country and reunite with their relatives after so many years… the chance to have a career or better paying job..and most importantly, the ability to  contribute to making this country more inclusive, fair and  equitable for ourselves and future generations through voting. 

There are three ways to become a citizen. The most common is birthright citizenship, which means anyone born in the United States is automatically a citizen. Another is called derivative citizenship, which allows children of U.S. citizens to acquire U.S. citizenship from their parents. Finally, non-citizens can apply for “naturalization,” the process by which a green card holder becomes a U.S. citizen after living in the U.S. for a period of time, usually 3-5 years.
