This bilingual exhibition, open through May 4, 2025, features artwork by students from Sandia Preparatory School who, guided by teacher Claudio Pérez, have transformed doors into powerful visual pieces that tell real stories of immigration, resilience, and hope.

Periodistas Comunitarios de Tu Voz Digital, Manuel Sanz y Mario Aguilar viajaron a la ciudad de Hatch, Nuevo México en donde se estaba dando acabo la fiesta anual de la fiesta de chile. Mario y Manuel estuvieron ahí cubriendo el evento para esta nota.

El pueblo de Hatch, Nuevo Mexico es conocido por su delicioso chile y su floreciente comunidad agricultural. Anualmente se celebra la fiesta de chile en el pueblo la cual atrae a mas de 30,000 personas de Estados Unidos y de todo el mundo.

“La gente le encanta. De hecho vienen de muchos países. Me han tocado de Tokyo, de Europa, De Canada, de hecho las personas de Europa dijeron que lo miraron en el internet y vinieron a Estados Unidos nada mas para la fiesta del chile,” dijo  Lucy Mancara y Maria Buñuelos, participantes de la fiesta.

Chile embotellado de Hatch, Nuevo México. Cuando el chile es vendido en tiendas, restaurantes el valor se multiplica sobrepasando un valor de $400 millones.

Según el Departamento de Agricultura de Estados Unidos la cosecha anual de chile es valorada a $65 million de dólares y eso es simple el comienzo de las ganancias económicas. Cuando el chile es vendido en tiendas, restaurantes el valor se multiplica sobrepasando un valor de $400 millones según la asociación nueva mexicana de chile.

Con ganancias así uno pensaría que habría una demanda para los granjeros del chile que traen el producto a las mesas pero dice productor de chile, Jose Soto, que se batalla para encontrar trabajadores.

“Hay mucho trabajo. Todos empiezan al mismo tiempo y toda la gente batalla por trabajadores.” dijo Soto. “Hemos tratado de buscar nosotros. Tenemos clientes en Utah que nos compran y él lleva trabajadores a Salt Lake City Utah no mas con el puro permiso. Le piden mas requisitos a él. Tiene que darles casa, tienes que pagarle poco mas, pero si podríamos hacer eso nosotros nos ayudaría mucho.”

El programa el de que habla Jesús es el programa de trabajadores H-2A. El cual permite a empleadores Estadounidenses que cumplen con los requisitos reglamentarios y específicos para llevar a nacionales extranjeros a los Estados Unidos para realizar trabajo temporal en el campo. El tiempo que se pueden estar los trabajadores son tres años.

Empleadores tienen que verificar con el servicio de Ciudadania e Inmigración de Estados Unidos que los trabajos son temporales y que no tienen suficientes trabajadores Estadounidenses que son capaces, dispuestos, calificados, y disponibles para hacer este trabajo temporal.

Soto dice que la mayoría de las personas que contrata son Mexicanos, porque Americanos no quieren hacer este trabajo.

“Se necesita…se necesita. Aquí la mayoría del Méxicano anda en el field. Andan los muchachos. No se mira un Americano pero es duro,” Soto dijo.

El otro programa, H-2B, permite a empleadores Estadounidenses llevar a extranjeros nacionales a los EE.UU. para cubrir puestos de trabajo temporales que no son para agrícolas.

Según la Oficina de Rendición de Cuentas del Gobierno de los EE.UU más de 250,000 trabajadores extranjeros entraron en los EE.UU. a través de ambos programas de visa a partir de 2009 hasta 2013.”

¿Pero qué pasa si no hay suficiente mano de obra en la cosecha? Buñuelos dice que se desperdicia el campo.

“Se les hecha perder un field,” Buñuelos dijo.

Pero aun así programas como el H-2A y el H-2B dejan muchos problemas para el trabajador como robo de salario y condiciones de vida deplorables.

Una posible solución para este problema de explotación del trabajador sería una reforma federal de inmigración integral.

For The Love of Chile

Community journalists, Manuel Sanz and Mario Aguilar of Tu Voz Digital  traveled to the city of Hatch, New Mexico for the Annual Chile Festival Mario and Manuel were there covering the event for this story.

The village of Hatch, New Mexico is known for its delicious chili and thriving agricultural community. Every year the Annual Chile Festival attracts more than 30,000 people in the US and around the world.

“People love it (The festival). In fact many come from many countries. I have seen people from Tokyo, Europe, Canada, in fact, the people that came from Europe said they looked for information online and came to the United States for nothing more than the chile festival , “said Lucy Mancara and Maria Buñuelos, participants of the Chile Festival.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture the annual chile harvest is valued at $65 million dollars, and that’s just the beginning of economic gains. When chili is sold in stores or restaurants the value multiplies exceeding a value of $400 million according to the New Mexico Chile Association.

With profits like that one would think there would be a demand for chili farmers who bring the product to tables but Jose Soto who is a producer of chile says he struggles to find workers.

“There is a lot of work. They all start at the same time and all the people battle for workers.” Soto said. “We have tried to find workers ourselves. We have customers in Utah who buy from us and he leads workers to Salt Lake City Utah only with a permission. They ask him for more requirements. You have to give (the workers) home, you have to pay them a little more, but if we could do that we would help us a lot. ”

The program that Jesus is talking about is the H-2A program – which allows U.S. employers to meet specific regulatory requirements to bring foreign nationals to the United States to perform temporary work in the field. The maximum time workers may stay in the U.S. are three years.

Employers must verify with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services that the jobs they are seeking to fill are temporary and that they do not have sufficient US workers who are able, willing, qualified, and available for said jobs.

Soto says most of the people he hires are Mexicans, because Americans do not want to do this type of job.

“It is needed… it is needed. The majority of the workers here are Mexican. Young men. You don’t see Americans, but it’s a hard job. “Soto said.

The other program, H-2B, allows US employers to bring foreign nationals to the US to cover temporary jobs that are not agricultural jobs.

According to the Office of Accountability US Government more than 250,000 foreign workers entered the US through both visa programs from 2009 to 2013. ”

But what if there is not enough laborers in the harvest? Buñuelos says that the field goes to waste.

“The fields go to waste” said Buñuelos.

But even programs like H-2A and H-2B leave many problems for the workers as wage theft and deplorable living conditions.

A possible solution to this problem of worker exploitations would be a federal comprehensive immigration reform.

Hola, buenas tardes. Mi nombre es Felipe Hernández y hoy les quiero contar una historia de una escalera milagrosa. La escalera está localizada dentro de la Capilla de Loretto en Santa Fe, Nuevo México.

La historia dice que en los fines de los siglos 19 se había construido una capilla, nombrada la capilla de San Loretto. Cuando los arquitectos habían terminado la construcción de la capilla los arquitectos y las hermanas de la iglesia se fijaron que había faltado una escalera para llevarlas al segundo piso. Los arquitectos les dijeron a las hermanas que ya era muy tarde para construirla porque la iglesia estaba muy chica y muy angosta para construir la escalera. Las hermanas de la iglesia se pusieron a rezar por nueve días, acabando de rezar se apareció un hombre en un burro. Las monjas le preguntaron que quien era, y él dijo que él era un carpintero y que podía construir la escalera. El señor pedió un tipo de madera de pino pero no había, entonces él fue a traer otro tipo de madera que se podía doblar para hacer los escalones. Terminando con la construcción las monjas le preguntaron qué cuanto cobraba, y él dijo que no cobraba. Entonces las monjas quisieron agradecer su construcción de la escalera con una comida, pero cuando se lo iban hacer el señor había desaparecido.

Empieza una investigación en donde se investiga de donde vino la madera que utilizo el señor porque era una madera que no se había visto, los investigadores no pudieron hallar ningún rasgo de donde vino esa madera porque no existe árbol ni pino que produce esa madera. La escalera milagrosa obtuvo ese nombre por los misterios alrededor de su construcción y porque la escalera no tiene clavos ni pegamento, ni soportes central pero aun así sigue en tacto.

Hoy en día la capilla de Loretto recibe a 250,000 visitantes al año y la iglesia tiene 137 años de la fecha. Cobran $3 dólares para entrar a la capilla y realmente es una bonita experiencia que tiene mucha historia y cultura y esta localiza aquí en Nuevo México. Si no lo han visto, realmente se lo recomiendo.

The Miraculous Staircase

Hello and good afternoon, my name is Felipe Hernandez. Today I want to tell you the story of the magic staircase. The staircase is located inside the chapel of Loretto in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The story is set in the end of the 19^th Century when the chapel of San Loretto was built. After the architects finished the construction of the church, the architects and nuns of the chapel noticed that they had forgotten about the staircase to reach the second floor. The architects told the nuns that it was too late to build a staircase because the chapel was too small and narrow. The nuns prayed for 9 days, and after those nine days a man on a donkey appeared. The nuns asked him who he was, and he responded that he was a carpenter and he could build the staircase. The man asked for pine wood but there wasn’t any. Then, he went out to find wood and came back with a type of wood that he could warp and bend as he wished to build the staircase. When he was done with the stairway the nuns asked him how much he would charge for his work. He refused to take anything from the nuns. The nuns were very thankful to the man that they wanted to make him a feast. Once they had started to make him food, he had disappeared.

An investigation begun where they tried to figure out where the wood came from because it was a type of wood that nobody had ever seen before. The investigators could not come to any conclusion of where the wood had come from. The magic staircase got its name from the mysterious construction. The staircase also does not have any nails, glue, or support, but still, the staircase stands.

The 137 year old chapel of Loretto receives 250,000 tourist a year because of the staircase. It cost 3 dollars per person to enter the chapel. The chapel is truly a beautiful experience with much history and is located here in New Mexico. If you have not got to visit it, I strongly recommend it.

Niños y Familiares del programa ACCESS posan por una foto junta a su director, Fernando Ortega.

El fútbol es mas que un deporte, es disciplina, es pasión. El fútbol es sinonimo de vida, hay obstáculos y barreras que hay que superar. El fútbol es humanidad, aceptación, tolerancia y unión. Fuera de la cancha todos somos diferentes pero en ella todos somos iguales, no importa la raza o el color.

El programa ACCESS fue iniciado por Fernando Ortega hace un año y el enfoque del programa es aumentar el potencial de los niños de la comunidad por medio del arte, de la comunidad, de la educación, de la ciencia y del deporte especialmente el fútbol.

“Los metemos al programa empezando con el fútbol para desarrollar habilidades fisico atleticas y de ahí les vamos enseñando mas materias.” dijo Fernando.

Adrian Carrillo, 10, pateando una pelota de fútbol durante el entrenamiento de ACCESS, el Jueves Pasado.

Para un niño de diez años, Adrian Carrillo, el programa ACCESS ha cambiado su vida. “Adrian era un niño muy tímido y muy callado” dijo Fernando Ortega, Director Del Programa ACCESS. “Cuando primero llego al programa yo sabia que esto niño tenia algo y que tenia mas que dar…pero le faltaba motivación…le faltaba enjundia.”

“Por eso yo siempre lo motivaba…échale Adrian, échale, le decía..como si comieras chile verde! Y así lo motivaba” dijo Fernando. “Finalmente en un partido que tuvimos yo vi a adrian mas relajado…y hecho dos golazos…todos se quedaron así como wow.” dijo Fernando. “Desde entonces Adrian ya no es tímido y ya nadie puede detenerlo de hablar.”

Adrian estaba en un programa de educación especial porque era muy introvertido y desde que el a estado en el programa ACCESS lo sacaron del programa y lo integraron en clases regulares con los otros niños.

“El lloraba, no era seguro, no participaba en la escuela” dijo Teresa Carrillo, mama de Adrian. “Mi hijo era uno de los niños que estaba en la escuela en un programa de ayuda porque era un niño muy introvertido y con las practicas del fútbol el se a hecho mas extrovertido, mas involucrado, mas seguro de si mismo.”

“El fútbol le ha dado confianza,” dijo Teresa. “La forma que Fernando los hace que participe, por lo regular, los niños usan palabras cortas cuando uno les pregunta, ¿Como te fue en la escuela? responden, bien y ya. Aqui eso no pasa, Fernando les dice, haber hazme una frase larga platicame bien…los hace ser mas seguros, que convivan con todos los compañeros.”

Los niños de ACCESS se reúnen con Fernando cada Miércoles para entrenar y tienen juegos de fútbol los Jueves y Viernes. “La edad promedia de los niños es de 5 a 12 años pero aceptamos a niños de cualquier edad,” dijo Fernando.

Learning with Soccer

Football is more than a sport, it’s discipline, it’s passion. Football is synonymous with life, there are obstacles and barriers that we have to overcome. Football is humanity, acceptance, tolerance and unity. Off the field we are all different but in it we are all equal, regardless of race or color.

The program ACCESS was initiated by Fernando Ortega a year ago and the focus of the program is to increase the potential of children in the community through art, community, education, science and especially sports through soccer.

“We start the kids off with playing soccer so that they learn how to develop athletic skills, and from there we teach them more subjects.” Fernando said.

For 10 year-old child, Adrian Carrillo, the program has changed his life. “Adrian was a very shy and very quiet child,” said Director of ACCESS, Fernando Ortega. “When I first came into the program I knew this kid had something more to give…but he lacked motivation…he lacked substance.”

“So I always motivated him…come on Adrian, come on…run like you just ate green chile! And that’s how I would motivate him,” Fernando said. “Finally, in one our soccer games I noticed Adrian more relaxed…and he made two great goals…everybody was shocked.” Fernando said. “Since then Adrian is no longer shy and nobody can stop him from talking.”

Adrian was in a special education program because he was very introverted. In his time in the ACCESS program he has retaken the test and passed. Adrian is now integrated in regular classes in his school.

“He would cry. He wouldn’t participate in school,” said, Adrian’s Mother, Teresa Carrillo. “My son was in an assistance program in school because he was very introverted. Practicing soccer has made him more confident, more involved, more sure in himself.”

“Soccer has given him confidence,” Teresa said. “The way Fernando makes the children participate, usually, kids use short words like good when one asks, How was your day at school?Here Fernando doesn’t allow them to do that. He tells them to describe their day in full sentences and he makes them participate and have dialogue with all of the children.”

The children that are part of ACCESS meet with Fernando every Wednesday for Training and they have soccer matches Thursday’s and Friday’s. “The average age of children is 5-12 years, but we accept children of any age,” Fernando said.

Es difícil dejar el lugar donde uno nació porque a la misma vez dejamos nuestro hogar, nuestra gente y nuestro país. Es especialmente difícil cuando llegamos a un país extraño donde se nos presentan muchos retos y dificultades por nuestras diferencias de idioma y nuestras costumbres.

la mayoría de los migrantes vienen a los Estados Unidos buscando por una vida mejor pero muchos no tienen nada, ni propiedad, ni dinero, nada. El dinero que tenían lo usan para el viaje a Estados Unidos, la tierra de la oportunidad. Vienen con sueños de abandonar los problemas que asechan a su país como la pobreza y violencia y cambiar esa vida por una vida donde puedan vivir una vida prospera y fructífera en los Estados Unidos.

La cruda realidad es que mucho de estos migrantes cuando migran a los Estados Unidos son sujetos a muchas injusticias que incluyen manifestaciones de racismo, xenofobia, trato inhumano, y otras formas de discriminación.

El 18 de diciembre es designado como el Día Internacional de el migrante y este día se debe entre otros al ascendente número de migrantes que existe en el mundo y a la inquietud internacional por asegurar la protección y el respeto de los derechos y libertades fundamentales de cada migrante. El centro de Igualdad y Derechos celebro este día con la comunidad de Albuquerque.

La Declaración Universal de los derechos humanos dice que todos los seres humanos nacemos con libertad y igualdad. Ademas dice que nadie debe de ser tratado diferente por sus distinciones, en especial las distinciones de raza y color. Este día es una celebración donde reconocemos el gran aporte y ayuda que brinda cada migrante hacia progresos sociales, económicos y culturales en todos los países de todo el mundo y en especial aquí en nuestra comunidad de Albuquerque.

Seeking A Better Life

It’s hard to leave the place where you were born because at the same time we leave our home , our people and our country. It is especially difficult when we come to a strange country where we face many challenges and difficulties for our differences in language and customs.

Most migrants come to the United States looking for a better life, but many have nothing , no property , no money , nothing. The money they had they used to travel to America, the land of opportunity. They come with dreams of leaving the problems that beset their country like poverty and violence, and instead exchange that life for the chance to  live a prosperous and fruitful life in the United States.

The stark reality is that many of these migrants when they migrate to the United States are subject to many injustices that include manifestations of racism, xenophobia , inhumane treatment, and other forms of discrimination.

December 18 is designated as the International Day of the migrant and this day is due to the fact of the increasing number of migrants in the world and international concern for ensuring the protection and respect of fundamental rights and freedoms for every migrant . El Centro de Igualdad y Derechos celebrated this day with the community of Albuquerque.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights says that all human beings are born with freedom and equality. Furthermore, it also says that no one should be treated differently because of their distinctions , especially because of race and color. This day is a celebration where we recognize the great contribution and support that each migrant provides in social , economic and cultural progress in all of the countries around the world, and especially in our community here in Albuquerque.
