In December, Encuentro transforms into a vibrant celebration of achievement and perseverance. When the semester draws to a close, our one-semester courses hold their graduations, and all of the other courses gather together to acknowledge the achievements of the fall semester.

Hundreds of adult immigrant students come together to mark this special milestone, proudly showcasing their hard work and dedication. Balancing multiple jobs, family obligations, and other commitments is no easy task, yet our students rise to meet the challenge, embracing their education with determination and remarkable resilience.

This joyous time is filled with laughter, the aromas of delicious foods, and cherished memories reflected through collective journeys toward brighter futures.

Each class celebration is a testament to the initiative and boundless possibilities ahead!

Alma Alvarado se graduó  de nuestra clase de Periodismo Comunitario y presentó su impactante proyecto final sobre la importancia de transformar las narrativas comunitarias. Este momento fue significativo para Alma, ya que fue tanto su primera experiencia en hablar en público como un desafío que mostró su talento como una emergente periodista comunitaria.

Alma Alvarado proudly graduated from our Community Journalism class. She presented her impactful final project on the importance of transforming community narratives. This moment was significant for Alma, as it was both her first public speaking experience and a challenge that showcased her talents as a rising community journalist.

“Esta capacitación me ha dado el valor no solo para hablar frente a las personas, sino que también me ha ayudado a mejorar mis relaciones interpersonales a través de una comunicación efectiva,” comentó Alma.

“This training has given me the courage not only to speak in front of people but has also supported me in improving my interpersonal relationships through effective communication,” said Alma.

El personal bilingüe que labora en estas ventanillas supera las barreras lingüísticas y culturales, lo que es fundamental para abordar asuntos de salud mental, que a menudo son desatendidos. In 2002, the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs launched a pioneering initiative known as Ventanillas de Salud. Initially established in the Consulates of San Diego and San Francisco, these windows have evolved into an essential resource for the Mexican migrant community in the United States. Their purpose is to facilitate access to primary and preventive health services, while promoting a culture of prevention among Mexicans and their families.

La Ventanilla de Salud have a profound impact on migrant communities. They not only provide access to critical health information but also offer education on prevention topics and connect migrants with local resources. The bilingual staff working at these windows helps overcome linguistic and cultural barriers, which is crucial for addressing often-overlooked mental health issues. Furthermore, these initiatives promote collaboration with local organizations, empowering communities to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. In this way, the health windows serve as an essential pillar for improving the quality of life for migrants in the country.

Our dedicated community journalists from Tu Voz Digital had the opportunity to engage in a conversation with Mónica Toquinto, the coordinator of the Ventanilla de salud at the Mexican Consulate in Albuquerque. Every year, this distinguished recognition program highlights those who have embodied an outstanding spirit of humanity on local, national, and international stages, reminding us all of the power of compassion and dedication.

On Thursday, August 15th, 2024, Encuentro witnessed a moment of profound significance at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Albuquerque presenting the 2024 NMHA at Casino Sandia, where our very own board president, **Sandra Ortsman**, was honored for her exceptional contributions to social justice and the advancement of racial and gender equity. With immense joy and pride, we celebrate Sandra’s achievement, not just as a personal victory but as a testament to the values we hold dear as an organization.

### A Champion for Social Justice: About Ortsman

Sandra Ortsman is a seasoned community planner and passionate advocate for social justice. Sandra has dedicated herself to advancing racial and gender equity through strategic planning, organizational development, fundraising, and access to capital initiatives. Her work spans a broad spectrum including foundations, educational institutions, grassroots organizations, and state entities.
Sandra holds dual Master’s degrees in Community and Regional Planning and Latin American Studies from the University of New Mexico (UNM). Her academic achievements, coupled with her bilingual abilities in English and Spanish, have enabled her to connect deeply with diverse communities and foster collaborative relationships across cultural boundaries.

Sandra also serves as an adjunct instructor at the UNM School of Architecture and Planning, where she educates future leaders on community-based practice. Each fall, she shares her expertise and passion, teaching students skills to engage and uplift marginalized communities.
Since 2015 Sandra has been an instrumental member of Encuentro’s board and has led as its President since 2018. Encuentro is a nonprofit dedicated to social justice, immigrant rights education a

Her dedication to community service is further evidenced by her involvement on various boards and committees dedicated to civil rights, anti-racism, and community health. From 2006 to early 2015, Sandra was the Associate Director at Enlace Comunitario, an immigrant rights organization working to eliminate domestic violence. In that role, she served as a member of Albuquerque’s Violence Prevention Task Force. In 2015, she founded a consulting firm to build capacity and financial resources for social justice nonprofits and like-minded foundations. In that role, she supports vital organizations like Centro Savila, the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center and the Southwest Women’s Law Center. She also works with Nusenda Credit Union, Roanhorse Consulting and other CDFIs to develop loan programs that have provided millions in loan funding to Native American and immigrant entrepreneurs. Her influence extends through her roles on the New Mexico Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and as a fellow of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Community Leadership Class II Network, amongst other notable positions.

Tu Voz Digital (TVD), Community Journalism from Encuentro, and the Raices collective of KUNM 89.9FM have joined hands to bring attention to the stories of the Latinx immigrant community in New Mexico. These informative programs are created by TVD’s team of community journalists, with the support of Raíces, and aim to highlight the difficulties and challenges faced by migrants every day, despite the systematic discrimination that still exists. The programs also celebrate the experiences and accomplishments of the Latinx community, acknowledging the significant contributions they make to the land of Enchantment.

We are thrilled to present the first two of a series of capsules that will be broadcast on the radio show “Raíces” at 4 pm through KUNM 89.9FM. The first capsule features an interview conducted by our community journalist, Mario Aguilar, with Biologist Jorge Bernal, Co-Director of the local organization “Salud Morena”. The organization is dedicated to ensuring optimal health and equitable attention for the most vulnerable populations in New Mexico. The interview investigates the correlation between climate change and migration and the strong impact it has and will continue to have on future migration. Somos un Pueblo Unido, fundada en 1995, es una organización estatal dirigida por inmigrantes y basada en la comunidad que promueve la justicia racial. La comunidad de Somos cuenta con membresía activa de 2,500 personas en ocho condados alrededor del estado y ofrece, entre otras cosas, educación comunitaria sobre derechos, oportunidades de liderazgo,  servicios legales a víctimas de robo de salarios, involucra a los latinos en procesos politicos y electorales ademas de liderar y apoyar campañas de base para políticas locales y nacionales que fortalezcan nuestras comunidades.

Gracias al trabajo y a la lucha de Somos, Nuevo Mexico es uno de los Estados que otorga  la  licencia de conducir a miembros de la comunidad aunque no cuenten con seguro social,  ICE ya no esta presenta en las cárceles Estatales disminuyendo deportaciones y tenemos politicas de protección santuario en varias ciudades del Estado. Esto solo por mencionar algunas de los logros de Somos en el Estado.

En esta entrevista mensual de TVD, aprenderá más sobre la historia de Somos, su trabajo en la comunidad y las campañas actuales en las que trabajan, como #VoteSíPorLosNiños la cual busca destinar y asegurar mas fondos a la educación temprana. When we talk about advocacy, building community and protecting human rights in NM, we have to talk about Somos Un Pueblo Unido.

Somos un Pueblo Unido, founded in 1995, is a statewide community-based and immigrant-led organization that promotes worker and racial justice. Somos has an active membership of 2,500 people in eight counties around the state, and offers community education about rights, leadership opportunities, and low-wage workers Provides legal services to wage theft victims and initiates impact litigation to defend worker’s rights, engages Latinos in the political and electoral process and leads and supports grassroots campaigns for local and national policies that strengthen our communities.

Thanks to the work  of Somos, New Mexico is one of the States that grants a driver’s license to members of the community even if they do not have social security, ICE is no longer present in State prisons, reducing deportations and we have protection policies sanctuary in several cities of the State. This just to mention some of the achievements of Somos in the State.

Ana Quiroz Entrevisto José Orduña autor de The Weight of Shadows: A memoir of Immigration. Orduña nació en Córdoba, Veracruz y emigró a Chicago cuando tenía dos. A los nueve, él y sus padres viajaron a Ciudad Juárez y aplicaron para residencia permanente en los Estados Unidos. Entraron a los Estados Unidos con una visa de turista. En 2010, Orduña aplico para la naturalización y en julio de 2011 se hizo ciudadano. Él es un graduado del programa de escritura de no ficción en la Universidad de Iowa y es activo en la solidaridad de América Latina.

La señora Ana Maria Mora de 71 anos de edad estudia para su clase de ayudantes del cuidado de la salud a domicilio (HHA por sus siglas en ingles.)

Ella se va al sitio Blackboard para accesar todos los materiales de estudio para la clase. Los estudiantes tienen pruebas, y ella se tiene que
preparar para la siguiente. “Quiero hacer una carrera de esto,” Mora dijo. “Yo se que me estoy poniendo mas vieja pero pienso que es importante seguir aprendiendo y luchar por algo mejor.”

La clase de HHA, la cual fue creada por Encuentro y esta siendo ofrecida en Central New Mexico (CNM). Según CNM la clase “prepara a estudiantes en dos niveles: un entrenamiento fundamental para ayudantes de trato personal, y entrenamiento mas avanzado para ayudantes del cuidado de la salud a domicilio y la finalización del programa cumple o excede con lo que exige el Departamento de Nuevo México por cada nivel de entrenamiento.”

“(La clase)Comenzó porque Andrea Plaza, la directora de Encuentro, quería ver como podía ayudar a todos los adultos que vienen…a los varios programas que tienen aquí…realmente ayudarles mover con más herramientas mientras están mejorando su inglés…que eso transfiera a habilidades en el trabajo…conseguir mejores trabajo porque tiene mas habilidades.”  dijo Leah Steimel, consultante en el proyecto de ayudante para la salud en el hogar. “Estuvimos hablando con mujeres y vimos que este tipo de trabajo ya lo están haciendo pero muchas de ellas no tienen el entrenamiento suficiente. Por eso es importante esta clase.”

La clase de HHA esta abierta para todos pero la mayoría de estudiantes que entran son mujeres dijo Iliana López, Coordinadora de Programas y Organizadora de los Trabajadores Domésticos. Encuentro forma parte de la Alianza Nacional de Trabajadoras del Hogar entonces también estamos utilizando esta clase como una manera de construir líderes que abogan por los derechos laborales para las mujeres. Alianza Nacional de Trabajadoras del Hogar

Alianza Nacional de Trabajadoras del Hogar

Según el sitio de la Alianza Nacional de Trabajadoras del hogar (NDWA por sus siglas en ingles) la NDWA es la voz principal de dignidad y justicia por los millones de trabajadores domésticos en los Estados Unidos, la mayoría que son mujeres. 53 organizaciones afiliadas, Encuentro es una de esas organizaciones. El NDWA es formado por mas de 20,000 niñeras, amas de casa, y cuidadores de personas de la tercer edad en 36 ciudades y 17 estado según su sitio.

“El Centro y Encuentro forman parte de la alianza por que apoyamos la misión de mejorar las protecciones laborales para los trabajadores domésticos,” dijo Claudia García, Organizadora Comunitaria de El Centro De Igualdad y Derechos. “Vemos este tema afectando a muchas de nuestras mujeres en nuestra comunidad inmigrante.

Según el sitio de NDWA, 95% de trabajadores domésticos son mujeres y 47% son inmigrantes.

“Yo limpio casas, y he visto el tipo de abuso que tenemos que confrontar,” García dijo. “Y es por eso que fuimos
a luchar en Washington.”

Asamblea Nacional de la Alianza Nacional de Trabajadoras del Hogar 2016

Estudiantes de Encuentro y organizadores se reúnen para cenar durante la asamblea. Desde la izquierda: Jessica Casas, Maria Valdez, Liliana Reyes, Claudia Garcia, Diana Bustillos, Sinuhe Sanders-Lopez, Fermina Lopez.

Trabajadoras del hogar de todo el país se reunieron en Washington D.C. para la asamblea. La asamblea se enfoco en construir poder y crear comunidad.

Graduadas de HHA, Jessica Casas y Maria Valdez viajaron a la Asamblea Nacional de la Alianza Nacional de Trabajadoras del Hogar 2016 desde el 17 de septiembre al 20 de septiembre. Ahí se reunieron con sienes de trabajadores domésticos de todo el país.

Varias otras mujeres también estuvieron presente en nombre de Encuentro y El Centro de Igualdad y Derechos. La mujeres que fueran a representar eran Liliana Reyes, Fermina López, Diana Bustillos y Claudia García.

“En Albuquerque he visto mucho maltrato en la comunidad de trabajadores domésticos incluyendo robo de salario y discriminación,” García dijo. “Y eso es lo que hablamos en la asamblea…hablamos del trato human, y la necesidad para igualdad económica para todos.”

“Es consolador ver a tantas mujeres luchar por lo que merecemos,” dijo García. “Creo que estamos dando pasos grandes para nuestras mujeres aquí en Albuquerque, que este siendo respaldada la clase de HHA por un colegio acreditado enseña que estamos logrando mas y mas, pero no podemos conformarnos. Esto es sólo una victoria. Tenemos que seguir luchando por la inclusión completa.”

Fighting for ‘Trabajadoras del Hogar’

71-year-old Ana Maria Mora studies for her Home Heath Aide class at Encuentro, a nonprofit organization focused on education and social justice. Although her ESL 1 class just ended her day has just begun. She only has a short time to study because she has to go to her housekeeping job soon. I have to plan my time wisely she says.

She goes on the blackboard website to access all of the study materials for her class. The students are quizzed, and she is preparing herself for the next one.

“I want to make a career out of this” Mora said. “I know I’m getting older, but I think it’s important to keep learning and fight for something better.”

The class that she is taking is a Home Health Aide class which was created by Encuentro and is being offered at Central New Mexico Community College(CNM).  According to CNM the class “prepares students at two levels: a foundational training for Personal Care Assistants and more advanced training for Home Health Aides, and completion of the program meets or exceeds the New Mexico Department of Health requirements for each level of training.”

“(The Class) was created because Andrea Plaza, the director of Encuentro, wanted to see how we could help all the adults here..that are enrolled in the programs here … and allow them to move with better tools … which transfer to job skills … to get better jobs because they have advanced skills. “said Leah Steimel, Home Health Aide consultant. “We were talking to women and found that they were already doing this type of work, but many of them did no have sufficient training. That is why this class is important.”

Home Health Aide is open for all, but the majority of students that enter the class are females said Iliana Lopez,  Encuentro’s Programs Coordinator & Domestic Worker Organizer.  Encuentro is a part of the National Domestic Workers Alliance so we’re also utilizing this class as a way to build leaders that advocate for worker rights for women.”

National Domestic Workers Alliance

According to the National Domestic Worker Alliance website The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) is the nation’s leading voice for dignity and fairness for the millions of domestic workers in the United States, most of whom are women.

The organization was founded in 2007 and is powered by 53 affiliate organizations, with Encuentro being one of them. The NDWA is also comprised of over 20,000 nannies, housekeepers, and caregivers for the elderly in 36 cities and 17 states according to their site.

“El Centro and Encuentro form part of the alliance because we support the mission of improving labor protections for domestic workers,” said Claudia Garcia, El Centro De Igualdad y Derechos community organizer. “We see this issue affecting a lot of our women in our immigrant community.”

According to the NDWA website 95 percent of domestic workers are women, and 46 percent of domestic workers are immigrants.

“I am a housekeeper, and I’ve seen the type of abuse we face,” Garcia said. “Which is why we went to fight in Washington.”

Domestic workers from across the country gathered in Washington D.C. for the 2016 Domestic Workers Assembly. The assembly focused on building power and fostering community.

HHA graduates Jessica Casas and Maria Valdez traveled to the National Domestic Workers Alliance 2016 National Assembly from September 17th – 20th. Here, they met with hundreds of domestic workers from the country.

Several other women representing Encuentro and El Centro De Igualdad y Derechos were also present at the assembly including Liliana Reyes, Fermina Lopez, Diana Bustillos and Claudia Garcia.

The focus of the assembly was to “foster community, build power, and align on strategies for our movement,” according to NDWA.

“In Albuquerque I’ve seen a lot of mistreatment in the domestic worker community including wage theft and discrimination,” Garcia said. “And that’s what we talked about in the assembly…we talked about the human treatment, and the need for economic equality.

“It’s comforting to see so many women fighting for what we deserve,” Garcia Said. “I do think we are making strides for our women in Albuquerque, the HHA class which is being backed up by a College institution validates that we are being recognized, but we can’t get comfortable. That is just one win. We have to keep fighting for full inclusion.”

El día internacional del trabajador es oficialmente el 1 de Mayo. En realidad es un día de huelga o día festivo. Muchas personas conocen del día pero lo que no es tan conocido es la sangrienta historia que existió detrás de esta fecha.

Nos tenemos que regresar al año 1884, en Estados Unidos. En esos tiempos, los trabajadores habían iniciado una lucha para lograr la jornada laboral de 8 horas, donde demandaban 8 horas para trabajar, 8 para descansar y 8 para dedicarlas al recreo o ocio.

Antes de estas protestas, la única limitación que existía en algunos estados era la prohibición de no hacer trabajar a una persona más de 18 horas porque si no iban a recibir una penalidad en donde tendrían que pagar 25 dólares.

Llegada la fecha, unos trabajadores si pudieron obtener su reducción de jornada. Pero muchos obreros no pudieron conseguir esta promesa e iniciaron una huelga en los próximos días para obligar a ceder a sus empleadores. La policía intentó frenar las manifestaciones en Chicago, pero en su intento se produjeron más de tres muertos entre los obreros.

En los próximos días 15 oficiales policiacos murieron al explotar una bomba que fue lanzada supuestamente por los sindicalistas. La policía responsabilizo a las personas que estaban en la Plaza. Cinco de ellos fueron estrangulados. Tres fueron condenados a cadena perpetua. La Internacional Socialista se propuso en 1889 defender la jornada de ocho horas para todos los obreros del mundo, y se haría en forma de una gran manifestación en todos los países en consideración a los Mártires de Chicago. La fecha que sugirieron fue el 1 de Mayo de cada año.

Why do we celebrate May 1st?

International Workers Day is officially on May 1st. In reality it is a day of strike or holiday. Many people know of the day, but what is less known is the bloody history that existed prior to this date.

To understand this day we must go back to 1884 in the United States. At that time, workers had started a fight for an 8-hour workday, that demanded eight hours for work, 8 hours for rest and 8 hours dedicate for recreation or leisure.

Before these protests, the only workday limitations that existed in some states was that a person could not work more than 18 hours, or else the employer would receive a fine of 25 dollars.

In the following days, some workers ended up getting their work-hours reduced, but still many workers were still held on the same work hours, so the workers initiated a strike in order to get the employers to concede to their demands. The police tried to stop the demonstrations in Chicago, but in their attempt three deaths occurred among the workers.

In the coming days a bomb was allegedly launched by the unionists that ended up killing 15 police officers. The Police blamed the people who were in the Plaza. Five of them were strangled. Three were sentenced to life imprisonment. In 1889 the Socialist International proposed to defend the eight-hour work day for all workers of the world, and would take form through a large demonstration, in all countries, that would honor the Martyrs of Chicago. The suggested date was May 1st of each year.
