Desde Tu Voz Digital, nuestro grupo de periodistas comunitarios inmigrantes, tuvimos el honor de conversar en vivo con Beatriz Valencia, la encargada de liderar la Oficina de Asuntos de Inmigrantes y Refugiados de Albuquerque (OIRA, por sus siglas en inglés).

Durante la transmisión, exploramos cómo esta oficina, fundada en 2016 con el apoyo de la Fundación W.K. Kellogg, trabaja incansablemente para mejorar la vida de todas las personas inmigrantes y refugiadas que han hecho de Albuquerque su hogar.

Beatriz compartió cómo la oficina ha logrado unir a diversas organizaciones comunitarias que atienden a nuestras comunidades, y cómo a través de un estudio profundo realizado en 2017, identificaron la necesidad urgente de mejorar el acceso a servicios en otros idiomas, así como de fortalecer la seguridad, inclusión y participación cívica de los inmigrantes y refugiados en la ciudad.

???? Facebook Live Interview with Beatriz Valencia, Director of the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs (OIRA) in Albuquerque ????????

As part of our project, Tu Voz Digital, a community journalism group led by immigrant adults, we had the great honor of speaking live with Beatriz Valencia, who heads the City of Albuquerque’s Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs (OIRA).

In this insightful conversation, Beatriz shared how OIRA, established in 2016 with support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, works to improve the lives of all immigrants and resettled refugees living in Albuquerque.

We learned how the office brings together a wide range of community-based organizations to coordinate efforts that support immigrant and refugee communities. Beatriz also discussed the importance of a citywide evaluation completed in 2017, which highlighted urgent needs such as language access, outreach, and inclusive policies to ensure immigrants and refugees can fully participate in civic life and access city services safely and equitably.

This was an inspiring and educational conversation that uplifted voices from our communities. We’re grateful to Beatriz Valencia for her leadership and her deep commitment to inclusion, safety, and opportunity for all.

Nadie debería tener que elegir entre su trabajo y el cuidado de un nuevo bebé, un familiar enfermo o su propia salud.  Sin embargo, esa es la situación en la que se encuentran muchos trabajadores estadounidenses. Estados Unidos es la única nación de la OCDE que no ofrece algún tipo de licencia familiar o médica remunerada.

Con el Departamento de Soluciones de la Fuerza Laboral administrando el Fondo Fiduciario de Licencia Familiar y Médica Pagada, la iniciativa garantiza que las familias tengan el tiempo que necesitan para vincularse después de dar la bienvenida a un nuevo hijo, tiempo para recuperarse de un problema de salud grave y tiempo para que los cuidadores familiares aborden las necesidades médicas de sus padres, hijos u otros miembros de la familia enfermos.

Los programas PFML también son efectivos para mejorar el desempeño y el compromiso de los empleados. Los estudios muestran que los empleados que toman una licencia paga tienen menos probabilidades de tomar una licencia por enfermedad cuando regresan, es más probable que sean empleados de la misma empresa dos años más tarde y es más probable que informen tener un alto nivel de moral y satisfacción en el lugar de trabajo.

¿En qué se diferencia esto de la licencia por enfermedad ya implementada en NM a mediados de este a-o? ¿Cómo beneficiaría PFML no solo a los empleados sino también a los empleadores? ¿Cuál es el estado actual de PFML? Como podemos apoyar esta iniciativa en la legislatura? Para responder a todas estas preguntas, Tu voz digital te trae esta conversación con Isaac de Luna, cofundador de Semilla Strategie, quien actualmente se desempeña como coordinador de comunicaciones de la coalición PFML liderada por Southwest Women’s Law Center y quien nos compartió detalles de la implementación de esta iniciativa que ser aprobada a principios del 2023.

No one should have to choose between their job and caring for a new baby, a sick family member, or their own serious health condition. Yet, that is the situation many American workers find themselves in. The U.S. is the only OECD nation that does not offer some form of paid family or medical leave.

With the Department of Workforce Solutions administrating the Paid Family & Medical Leave Trust Fund, the initiative ensures that families have the time they need to bond after welcoming a new child, time to recover from a serious health problem, and time for family caregivers to address the medical needs of their sick parents, children, or other family members.

PFML programs are also effective in improving employee performance and engagement. Studies show that employees who take paid leave are less likely to take sick leave when they return, more likely to be employed by the same business two years later, and more likely to report high morale and workplace satisfaction.

How is this different from the sick leave already implemented in NM? How does PFML would benefit not only employees but also employers? What is the current status of PFML? Pathways es un programa diseñado para reducir las necesidades insatisfechas, abordar las inequidades en la salud y mejorar la salud general de los residentes del condado de Bernalillo. Se enfoca en resultados de salud positivos al utilizar navegadores de salud comunitarios como coordinadores de atención que conectan a los residentes en riesgo con los recursos y siguen su progreso hacia mejores resultados de salud. Se alcanzan resultados significativos para los clientes siguiendo un enfoque paso a paso (Pathways). Si bien los clientes individuales logran una mejor salud, los problemas comunes de los sistemas también salen a la luz y dan como resultado una coordinación de servicios más sólida.

Pathways is a program designed to reduce unmet needs, address health inequities, and improve the overall health of the residents of Bernalillo County. It focuses on positive health outcomes by utilizing community health navigators as care coordinators who connect at-risk residents to resources and follow their progress toward improved health outcomes. Meaningful outcomes for the clients are reached by following a step-by-step approach (Pathways). While individual clients attain improved health, common systems issues are also brought to light and result in stronger service coordination.

Tu Voz Digital te acerca a El Censo 2020

El Censo 2020 se acerca y con él, la oportunidad para que nuestra comunidad sea contada y tomada en cuenta de manera justa. Sin embargo, entre nuestra comunidad aún existen dudas y preguntas en relación a este proceso: ¿Mi información es confidencial? ¿Puedo responder el cuestionario en español? ¿Quién cuenta en el Censo? Estas son solo algunas de las muchas preguntas que existen.

El 1ero de abril es el día del Censo 2020 y el equipo de periodistas comunitarios de Tu Voz Digital de Encuentro les presenta esta  cálida e informativa entrevista con Sergio Martínez, coordinador y representante de las Oficinas del Censo en el Estado de Nuevo México, quien respondió a estas y mas preguntas sobre el Censo y comenta por qué es tan  importante nuestra participación en este proceso cívico.

En la segunda parte de esta conversación, platicamos con la organizadora comunitaria Rosalinda Dorado de nuestra organización aliada, El Centro de Igualdad y Derechos, quien nos comparte estadísticas sobre el censo así como las estrategias que dicha organización está llevando a cabo para promover el censo dentro de nuestra comunidad.

Los resultados del censo también determinan el número de asientos que recibe cada estado en el Congreso y se usan para trazar los distritos legislativos y estatales.

The Census 2020 is coming! This is an important  opportunity for our community to be fairly counted.  However, there are still many questions that our community has regarding the Census:  “Are my answers confidential? Can I answer the questionnaire in my own language? Who counts in the census?” Those are only a few of those questions.

April 1st is the opening day of the 2020 Census and Encuentro’s Tu Voz Digital’s community journalist team brings you a warm and informative interview with Sergio Martínez, coordinator and representative of the Census Offices in the State of New Mexico. Sergio helps answer those and more questions and tell us about  the importance of our participation in this civic process.

In the second part of this conversation we talk to Rosalinda Dorado, community organizer from our partner organization El Centro de Igualdad y Derechos, who is promoting the Census within the immigrant community so we can be fairly counted and we can have the political representation our communities deserve.

The Census is mandated by the Constitution and conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau,(a nonpartisan government agency) every 10 years. The 2020 Census counts the population in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories. 

It is really important to participate in the Census. The census provides essential information for legislators, besides the results determines their representation in Congress, as well as the distribution of federal funds for states and communities. Every year, billions of dollars in federal funding go to hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources based on census data.

The results of the census also determine the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Each home will receive an invitation to respond to a short questionnaire—online, by phone, or by mail.

April 1: By this date, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. Once the invitation arrives, you should respond for your home in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail. When you respond to the census, you’ll tell the Census Bureau where you live as of April 1, 2020.

May – July: Census takers will begin visiting homes that haven’t responded to the 2020 Census to help make sure everyone is counted.

De los mexicanos que viven fuera de su país, del 90% al 95% residen en Estados Unidos. En un esfuerzo por mejorar la calidad de vida de nuestros paisanos, el gobierno de México cuenta con una red consular de más de cincuenta consulados alrededor de los Estados Unidos, siendo el de Albuquerque el encargado de atender las necesidades de los mexicanos en el norte y centro del Estado de Nuevo México. Esto, bajo el liderazgo de la Cónsul Titular Norma Ang.

En esta edición, el equipo de “Tu Voz Digital” de Encuentro, trae para ustedes una cálida e informativa entrevista de la mano de nuestro periodista comunitario, Mario Aguilar, quien tuvo la oportunidad de conversar con la actual Cónsul de México en Albuquerque, Norma Ang,.En esta entrevista, Ang no solo nos comparte la misión del consulado y su funcionamiento,  sino también la información sobre los requisitos para obtener identificaciones como el pasaporte mexicano, la matrícula consular, así como los beneficios de la doble nacionalidad, traslado de restos a México y los diferentes programas que el gobierno ofrece a nuestros paisanos.

Ninety to ninety-five percent of Mexicans living outside of their country reside in the United States. In an effort to improve the quality of life of our Mexican nationals, the Mexican government has a consular network of more than 50 consulates around the United States.The  Albuquerque-based consulate is in charge of serving the needs of Mexicans in  northern and central parts of New Mexico. All of this, under the leadership of the Titular Consul, Norma Ang.

This blog brings you a warm conversation that Community Journalist Mario Aguilar held with Ms. Norma Ang, current Director of the Mexican Consulate in Albuquerque and the state of New Mexico.  Ms. Ang has held this position for two years, and through this interview, she shares a vision of her role and the services this consulate has the obligation to bring to Mexicans as a representative institution of the Mexican government within the United States.

Ms. Ang not only shares with us the mission of the consulate and its operation, but also informs us on the requirements to obtain identifications such as the Mexican Passport, the consular registration, as well as the benefits of dual citizenship, transfer of remains to Mexico and the different programs that the government offers to our countrymen.

At Encuentro we are dedicated to strengthening our immigrant community through Adult Education, and a part of our mission is to promote social justice in our state;therefore, taking into account that more than 90% of our students are of Mexican origin, our duty is to facilitate access to the information and resources available to them, such as the information on consular services mentioned above.

Journalist Alma Martinez interviews Cecilia Chavez Beltrán on behalf of the Sierra Club which is an organization that focuses on the environment. Cecilia has newly started a club where people of all backgrounds can participate and lead excursions through New Mexico’s unique natural landscapes. This is an opportunity where families can experience nature with a community of people who are interested in the outdoors. Cecilia’s role is to help organize the excursions by inviting people and leading the walks herself. She describes the atmosphere as a place to replenish, re-focus, and relax while “disfrutando el medio ambiente” through relatively easy hikes in places such as the Bosque or the Sandia Mountains. She emphasizes that these events are free of charge and families/kids are more than welcome. The next excursion will be through the petroglyphs, therefore participants will receive a learning experience as well as exercise. Coming prepared with appropriate shoes, water, and sun protection is highly advised. These events are on-going. Estados Unidos de América es un gran país que se ha hecho sobre la base de los inmigrantes, este hecho americano transformó la vida de los trabajadores de todo el mundo.Esta fecha debería de conmemorarse aquí más que en ningún otro país ¿por qué no se hace? Hay muchas razones políticas sin mucho sustento en mi opinión. Para mi sigue siendo una fecha que debe ser recordada con orgullo por todos los americanos.
