La Opinión del Pueblo: Los Niños de la Frontera

In English, Inmigración, Justicia by Ilse Grijalva

— Ivan Ortiz, 1st generation Mex-American

— Robert Seagall, 4th generation Euro-American

The People’s Opinion: The Children on the Border

Manuel Sanz, Tu Voz Digital, explains why he chose three people from “different perspecties” to audio record opinions about the situation faced by Central Americans on the border. Encuentro asks that you also participate by leaving your opinion about this situation. Listen to the recordings and leave your opinion below.

I was interested in these three people. They are people coming from different perspectives. Each very, very different. One is Mexican born in Mexico, living and working in the United States. Another is American, with Mexican parents and Hispanic culture entwined with an American one. And the last person is a 3rd or 4th generation American. So, this captured my attention, I wanted to get three opinions from three different perspectives. Despite coming from different perspectives, all agreed that these children were suffering, that the focus should be that they are children…. independent of any laws here in the United States. All came to a common ground in that they all agreed there should be something done to help these children, put laws aside, because this was a humanitarian issue. We have to do something to help these children.

– Manuel Sanz

I place myself in these children’s shoes because I believe politics have abandoned us, to the point that even children are left to immigrate. Before it was mom and dad, now it is the children.

— Victor Manuel Reyes, recent immigrant

I think that the children should be interviewed and screened, if it is an international problem, I think the international community or the community in the America’s should do work and cooperate together; to help these children.

— Robert Seagall, 4th generation Euro-American

Well I believe no one knows what they have gone through, and obviously every child at that age should be with their parents, but at the same time, the way things are right now, the best choice is to look for opportunities in other places.

— Ivan Ortiz, 1st generation Mex-American
