Learn about Dia de los Muertos

The Day of the Dead (el Día de los Muertos), is a Mexican holiday celebrated on November 1 and 2, though other days, such as October 31 or November 6, where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink and celebration.

La Catrina/ El Catrin: La Calavera Catrina (‘Elegant Skull) has become an icon of Day of the Dead that offers a satirical portrait of those Mexican natives who were aspiring to adopt European aristocratic traditions in the pre-revolution era.

El Altar/ Ofrenda
Altars, called las ofrendas (“offerings”), are set up to welcome home the souls of the dead. Altars are decorated with marigolds (the flower of the dead); favorite dishes, candles, incense, toys, other enticements, and objects of personal use. In some instances, a path of flower petals directs the souls to their home altars.

We need YOU to be the LIFE of this party, join us on November 11!

Proceeds from this event fuels Encuentro’s nationally recognized Adult Education programs and celebrates the achievements of our Spanish Speaking immigrant community!
