Integrando Derechos Civiles en El Nuevo Semestre

In Educación, English by Ilse Grijalva

Connecting Civil Rights in the New Semester

The first day of school has arrived at Encuentro! Around 200 students have been registered so far and it could increase even more in the near future. In this new school year, participants will be attending the following classes: Math (for GED), English as a Second Language, Computer Literacy, Citizenship, Finances for small businesses and the home, Healthy Relationships, Between Friends (Entre Amigos), and Parents in Action (the last three being led by Enlace Comunitario).

Students started class on Wednesday, August 27th at 9 AM. This first week has immersed students in educational topics that stem from our personal knowledge and community experience–intertwined with the tools needed to understand and protect our civil rights for ourselves, our families and the communities we live in.

Encuentro is ready to cultivate more skills, knowledge and opportunities for personal, family and community development.  Recognizing this, we would like to pose the following questions to reflect upon this coming year: How does learning about my civil rights impact my life? Why is it useful for us to include our real life knowledge into the traditional classroom?
