Fair Work Week

Plácida Cortes, Tu Voz Digital, gives an emotional speech about the reason why workers need a city ordinance allowing paid sick days, predictable schedules, and full-time employment to be passed in front of a full house in the event that launched the fair work week campaign.

The Fair work week campaign that calls for the passing of a city ordinance that would allow workers paid sick days, predictable schedules and full-time employment was held at Los Volcanes Senior Center on Thursday June 4th.

The fair work week campaign is directed by OLÉ and coalition members, El Centro De Igualdad y Derechos (CID), Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP), Working America, Communication Workers of America (CWA) and United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW). Albuquerque City Councilors Isaac Benton, Klarissa Peña, Ken Sanchez and Senator Jacob Candelaria were present at the event where they signed the pledge for Fair Work.

“It will be a fight, probably we will get five democratic votes, no problem, but we have to realize that mayor Berry has vetoed more legislatures than approved,” Councilor Benton said. “We will work, but we have to let the mayor know what we want.”

In order for the ordinance of paid sick days, predictable schedules, and full-time employment to be passed it would need five votes in favor and the support of Albuquerque Mayor Richard Barry. If Mayor Berry does not support the ordinance he can veto, and from there the ordinance would go back to the council where the ordinance would need six votes instead of five to pass.
