Carta de Amor y Agradecimiento a Encuentro

Cada diciembre, mi tradición es reflexionar sobre el año pasado y mirar hacia el año que viene. Muy pronto nos despediremos de 2019 y daremos la bienvenida al 2020; Una nueva década llena de posibilidades inagotables y oportunidades para que actuemos en solidaridad y amplifiquemos la voz de la comunidad de inmigrantes latinos.

  En enero de 2019, me mudé de Carolina del Norte a Nuevo México para comenzar un nuevo capítulo en la Tierra del Encanto y trabajar en Encuentro. Como hija de inmigrantes Italianos y alemanes, y madre de un hijo con raíces Guatemaltecas, siempre sentí una profunda conexión con la comunidad inmigrante, pero tenía miedo y me preguntaba: ¿encajare? . . . ¿haré nuevos amigos? … ¿encontraré un hogar? … ¿tendre ese sentido de pertenencia? Como aprendiz de español, otra cosa que me preocupaba era el  entender y ser entendido. Uno de mis miedos era no tener esa fluidez necesaria para encajar o el temor a decir algo culturalmente inapropiado. Me imagino que son temores normales para todos los que emigramos.

Aunque el año pasado no fue fácil, si ha sido increíblemente gratificante y estoy enormemente agradecia. Gracias a Encuentro, he tenido el honor de relacionarme con las personas más increibles, resistentes, trabajadoras y comprometidas que he conocido en mis 53 años en el planeta Tierra:

• Estudiantes de Encuentro: ¡Me inspiran tanto! El compromiso con su educación y con los demás, su impulso para mejorar sus habilidades de lenguaje, alfabetización y tecnología, sus contribuciones a la fuerza laboral local y carreras como un asistente de salud en el hogar, su compromiso de amplificar la voz de la comunidad de inmigrantes latinos a través del liderazgo, su compromiso cívico así como su espíritu emprendedor. . . ustedes son personas INCREÍBLES y han enriquecido mi vida.Gracias por todo lo que hacen para mejorar a la comunidad y  la gran cantidad de formas en las que contribuyen con sus dones y talentos en el mundo.
• Maestros de Encuentro: ¡Qué afortunados somos de beneficiarnos de la experiencia como educadores! Su compromiso con los estudiantes de Encuentro,su habilidad como educadores y la creatividad en el aula no tienen comparación. Gracias por compartir sus dones pedagógicos y las estrategias generosas que brindan para crear entornos de aprendizaje dinámicos en Encuentro.
• Mesa Directiva de Encuentro: ¡Nos fortalecen! Su dedicación a la justicia social y económica, el compromiso con la comunidad de inmigrantes latinos, la voluntad de ofrecer su tiempo como voluntario, talentos y tesoros, compromiso, visión y liderazgo firme es ejemplar y sustenta la misión de Encuentro. ¡Estamos tan agradecidos!
• Staff de Encuentro– ADORO a cada uno de ustedes. No solo me recibieron con los brazos abiertos como lo hacen con todos los que ingresan a las puertas de Encuentro, sino que también me permiten ser testigos de su  dedicación y las abundantes formas en que aplican su creatividad y habilidades con excelencia para impulsar colectivamente las operaciones diarias y mantener vivo el ecosistema Encuentro. ¡Gracias por todo lo que hacen!
• Voluntarios, aliados, donantes, financiadores y amigos de Encuentro. En pocas palabras, ¡no podríamos existir sin ustedes! Gracias por su compromiso con la educación y la comunidad inmigrante. Su generosidad, su firme apoyo y sus abundantes contribuciones no solo alimentan la misión de Encuentro sino que hacen que nuestra comunidad se siga superando. ¡Gracias!

Mientras miramos colectivamente hacia el próximo año, tengamos en cuenta la importancia de nuestra acción unificada en 2020. Que nos unamos y seamos contados (Censo 2020) para asegurar que se asignen fondos futuros en nuestras comunidades. Que podamos ser líderes en la comunidad local y asegurarnos de que la voz de la comunidad de inmigrantes latinos se incluya en el discurso público.No solo es, pero que tambien podamos salir y votar en las elecciones presidenciales de 2020 para asegurarnos de que estamos eligiendo a un candidato que valore a nuestra comunidad y nos defienda.

 A love letter to Encuentro … with gratitude

Each December my tradition is to reflect upon the past year and look ahead to the new year that is coming.  Very soon we will bid farewell to 2019 and welcome 2020; a new decade full of unharnessed possibilities and important opportunities for us to act in solidarity and amplify the voice of the Latino immigrant community.

In January 2019, I moved from North Carolina to New Mexico to start a new chapter in the Land of Enchantment and begin working at Encuentro. As the daughter of Italian and German immigrants, and the mother of a son with Guatemalan roots, I have always felt a deep connection to the immigrant community, but I was afraid and wondered – would I fit in? . . .  make new friends? … find a home? … and feel a sense of belonging? As a Spanish language learner, I worried about understanding and being understood. I was afraid of feeling stupid because I was not fluent and/or doing or saying something culturally inappropriate. I imagine in many ways that these are similar concerns for anyone who migrates from their home to a new place. 

Although the past year hasn’t always been easy, it has been incredibly rewarding and I am expansively grateful. Because of Encuentro, I have had the honor to engage with the most amazing, resilient, hard-working, and committed people that I have ever encountered in my 53 years on planet Earth:                    

• Encuentro Students: You inspire me! Your commitment to your education and each other, your drive to improve language, literacy and technology skills, your contributions to the local workforce and careers like a home health aide, your commitment to amplifying the voice of the Latino immigrant community through leadership and civic engagement, and your entrepreneurial spirits . . .  you are AMAZING people and have enriched my life. . Thank you for all that you do to enhance the local community and the myriad of ways you contribute your gifts and talents in the world. 
• Encuentro Teachers: How lucky we are to benefit by expertise as Educators and compassionate care as people! Your commitment to Encuentro students, skill as educators and creativity in the classroom is unparalleled. Thank you for sharing your unique pedagogical gifts and the bountiful ways that you give of yourselves to create dynamic learning environments at Encuentro. 
• Encuentro Board: You strengthen us! Your dedication to social and economic justice, commitment to the Latino immigrant community, willingness to volunteer your time, talents and treasures, committed action, vision and steadfast leadership is exemplary and  sustains the mission of Encuentro. We are grateful to you and for you!
• Encuentro Staff – I ADORE each of you. Not only have welcomed and embraced me with open arms, as you do with all who enter Encuentro’s doors, each day I am blessed to witness your dedication and the bountiful ways that you apply your creativity and skills with excellence to collectively propel day-to-day operations and keep the Encuentro ecosystem alive. Thank you for all you do!
• Encuentro Volunteers, Allies, Donors, Founders and Friends – Put simply, we could not exist without you!  Thank you for your unbridled commitment to education and the immigrant community.  Your bountiful generosity, steadfast support and copious contributions not only fuels Encuentro’s mission but makes our community complete.  Thank you!

As we collectively look ahead to next year, let us all be mindful of the importance of our unified action in 2020. May we come together and be counted (Census 2020) to ensure that future funding is allocated in our communities.  May we stand as leaders in the local community and ensure that the voice of the Latino immigrant community is included in public discourse.And may we get out and vote in the 2020 Presidential Election to ensure that we are electing a candidate that values our community and will advocate for us.
